The first version of the game control stuff should be ready today. If not today, then by the end of the day Monday.

It will be for managing Pitchers and the Bullpen.

A couple pre-warnings which I will reiterate. There will be bugs, that is a given. But the main warning is that the screens that you will be using to set preferences haven't been idiot-proofed yet. I'll be working on that step next. So there are certain things that will cause problems, and may even crash the games if you don't treat it nicely (like using negative numbers for things like runs, or inputting text where a number should go). Or making sure that you don't have the same bullpen type used twice in the same line. These error checks will take a few hours to get together, but I want to give you guys a taste of it so we can start finding bugs while I finish the screens.

The first version of this is finished and will be available shortly. You should see a link on the left menu called Manager Preferences.

Note that the Probable Pitchers on the standings page will be broken if you are using any rotation strategy other than skip whenever possible (you'll see in a minute).

I will try to address bugs as they come up, so please be patient as we work through these and make it more solid for the rest of the Sim Dynasty users.

I'm guessing that what is in there now is the default, and what ABE uses in the Dynasty Leagues, right? Also, is there some way to set it back to default if we start messing around with it, then don't like it and change our minds?

Yep, go ahead. Everything seems okay to me so far.

One note. If you use the strategy "never skip a starter", it won't take effect until the next game. It needs to have one game to see who pitched the last game (if that makes sense). After the league plays its next game, you can flip back and forth between these strategies and it should work instantly.

Some of it is close to what Abe had. Some of the things are new to Abe.

If you leave it as the default, it should manage somewhat close to what Abe has been doing.

I'll add a "reset to defaults" button when I finish these screens next week.

I'm considering what I'm going to put in the Rule Book for this, because it certainly will need to include this. I'm even slightly overwhemed by it at first, so I'm trying to break it down into smaller pieces.

Please correct me if I'm wrong on any of this.

For the Starting Pitcher Strategy, "Skip starters in the rotation" will use the current method, where ABE picks the highest guy in your rotation.

"Only skip the 5th starter" will have your rotation go 1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 2,... etc. whenever possible, which is when your other starters are not tired. If your other starters are tired, then your #5 guy will be used.

"Never skip a starter" means that your rotation will go 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 1, ... etc. as long as your starters aren't tired out of order for some reason.

Did I get all this right so far?


Also, I have a few questions about the exact definitions of certain things on the Pitcher's screen. The key word in each phrase should be bold in my post.

What are the exact meanings of "if the pitcher is ineffective"; "only in certain circumstances"; "if necessary when the pitcher is tired".

Also, what is "tired" defined as, and do you have chart or something that says "For a B+ Endurance pitcher he can face X number of batters before he begins to tire."


Overall, it looks realy good. I can already see some of the stuff that I will be putting to use, and can change on a series to series basis. I like it! :D

In ER+Hits+Walks+HBP, what does ER stand for? Because it could stand for Earned Runs or Errors. Maybe there could be a # of batters faced option, because that is essentially what is being decided.

ER is Earned Runs. Its basically how many batters have reached base.

Let me see if I can answer the other things. Maybe there is a better way to say it.

These basically answer this question: What should Abe do if you have a pitcher that is ineffective, but there aren't any RP left in the bullpen?

or

What should Abe do if your pitcher is tired, but there aren't any RP left in the bullpen?

Inneffective is defined by all the choices above that drop down.

Tiredness is calculated internally by Abe. But if you still have the info about converting letter grades to numbers, you can figure out how many batters they will face by using this forumula:

1.4 * endurance / 4 = number of batters they can face.

This works the same as the effectiveness thing. Its like ok, I understand how you want to handle the bullpen when a pitcher gets tired, but what should I do if there are no more true RP left in the pen?

Just out of curiosity, based on your tiredness formula, if a RP has an endurance of F how many batters can he face?

Maybe a better question - what is the numeric value of all the endurance letter grades? F, D-, D, D+, etc?

I believe F is between 0 and 4. So 4 * 1.4 / 4 is 2 batters (he becomes tired after the 2nd batter).

Abe liked to manage that if a guy is tired, keep him in if he is still doing the job. But you can now decide otherwise.

I think a reset switch would be a very good idea for this...there's a lot of stuff to monkey around with and it could be very hard to remember how to put it back to where it all was.

Wow - very cool. These screens will take a bit of time to digest. My first impression is to see if there's any way to make the descriptions any clearer or refine some of the parameters so that these controls aren't quite so overwhelming.

On a related note - did implementing this feature cause the last 2 games tonight to not happen?

Instead of doing these formulae based on Batters Faced, can you use Pitch Count and for now assume a pitch count of 4 per batter? This way if you do eventually build a pitch count into the game, you won't have to redo all this code again...you'll only have to replace the assumption with the real pitch count.

I think the copy should be clear about what the default setting is. Looking at all of these numbers (ER+Hits+HBP+Walks) is a little confusing considering I have no idea what it was before or what ABE suggests. Are the current settings the suggested settings?

I'm not sure how had it would be, but someone (Chris maybe) had developed some formula based on a pitcher's control and velocity to determine a theoretical pitch count. If it is changed, that is something that I would like to see. Also, would it be possible to build that (or anyother form of pitch count into the upcoming new "Dynasty Vision"?

:( And, sorry, that "Or 3 games maybe?" looking at it this morning looks kinda smart-alecky (sp?) today, as opposed to when I was tired last night. I hope it didn't look that way to anyone else. (We REALLY need an edit function.) :(

Would it be possible to add a "Speed" Rating to the "The opposing team has a runner on at least:..."? Because then I could specify that if the runner on 2nd is an A Speed or above, then I want a new pitcher brought in.

Also, what would be the proper settings to never pull a pitcher in the event of a no-hitter?

I must have done something right, (or more likely it was set there on its own), but Mac Powell just pitched a Complete Game Shutout, and the score was only 3-0. In past experience, he has always been pulled for the closer in a save situation like this.

Good Starting Pitching?

I'm not sure if something is up or if it's just coincidence but I've had 4 complete games in a row and 5 out of my last 6 games have been complete games. In the past 6 games, my bullpen has pitched 1 inning. Maybe it's just a coincidence.
