Merger?

July 07, 2017 at 07:34PM View BBCode

With almost 1/2 the league bots it's natural to assume they will merge this league with another very soon. Has anyone asked admin. about it?

I haven't asked Admin, but I would strongly be in favor of a merger.

Here's the deal, Lawman. I know you are a great owner as I've played with you when I was starting out in the Joe Medwick League 6-7 years ago before you left that league. I can also vouch for you merely by seeing you playing history and your message board activity that you are genuine in your motives. We are grateful to have owners like yourself join the DDL. However, I have repeatedly been extremely skeptical in the past of some previous owners' motives for attempting to take advantage of the fact that the DDL does suffer from low ownership rate compared to other Dynasty Leagues.

Here's my main issue with a merger: The merged leagues still have to deal with bots. Here's the [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/dynastyavailable.jsp]link to the team's currently without an owner for next season[/url]. And, yes, I know that you are all likely aware of this fact. I just want to reiterate it because so often there is chatter about mergers and I believe they are sold to the owners as a solution to the bot problem when in reality they are more like a very effective bandaid.

Here's a crude paste of the table (I know it's going to look terrible, but I'm just trying to highlight that they exist):
minnesotamike Ashburn Crawford League 24 1968 Minnesota Scotsmen Buy this team
Frankenstrat Speaker Wilson League 24 1985 Washington Corruption Buy this team
DynastyBot Keller Stargell League 24 1983 Boston Lionhearts Buy this team
junghwaowh Keller Stargell League 24 1983 Milwaukee Brewers Buy this team
bbiernac Simmons Davis League 24 1974 Texas Stars Buy this team
Youthamizum Simmons Davis League 24 1974 Miami Stingrays Buy this team

IMHO, merging 2 16 team leagues is a great short-term solution to combatting decreased ownership (ie. ***8 bot teams magically go poof, a player pool of which 75% are players no one wants or cares about generally), but does it really lead to better ownership in the long run or rather is it better to change to Crystal Clear Pepsi when most people enjoy Pepsi pretty well? ***What you end up with are the combined 24 owners from the 2 Dynasty Leagues that are the type of owners that typically stick around for extended periods. Does that make it surprising that it leads to more stability within the new 24-team leagues? Not really. It'd be like if you & 9 friends all met up to play a weekly 5-on-5 game of hoops every week, only there were 4 guys who typically flaked for some reason or another. So you change to 3-on-3 and voila everything is for the better except those guys who never showed up might get a little butthurt, but they'd get over it. It does seem to decrease the percentage of botted teams when you consider the increase in number of owners from 16 to 24, but once again I ask if this might have a correlation due to the fact that the owners coming from both original Dynasty League tend to be more loyal owners.

That's my response to the Merger issue, Lawman.

***Edited to fix the # of botted teams eliminated should have been 8 not 12. Also, my wording about the 12 teams from each league was poorly worded as well. It makes better sense now.

I was going to include this with my response to Lawman, but I realized I wanted to separate the 2 as he has nothing to do with other owners. Anyways, here's my frustration in regards to the issue I've noticed elsewhere.

I'm very skeptical of Michael1's intentions for being so pro-DDL merger. He has been an owner previously in the DDL as evident from his [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/owner.jsp?owner=Michael1&mode=active]owner card[/url]. Problem is, he's never been an owner to stick with a team for 10+ SimDynasty years. His tenure started with PIT from 1981-90, he then took over BOS from 2005-07, then LA from 2011-2017, then finally MIL from 2021-22. So my question is: if the league suddenly merges into a 24-team league, then is he suddenly going to stick around for once? I doubt it. I've even called him on his fickleness in [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/oldforum-viewthread.jsp?tid=428103]this Forum Post from April of last year[/url]. Back then, he was only leaving because I was tough on him when I questioned the validity of his reasons, of which were high asking price for good players and poor draft classes. Somehow, a 24 league team will fix those 2 problems he had with the DDL? What????

I'll also remind owners preferences that Admin has already asked owners for their preferences on Dynasty League updates as listed [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/oldforum-viewthread.jsp?tid=435161]here in this thread from last September[/url] by mhollidaze. I do believe he was a bit off in his description of the voting request, however. I believe what he was referring to was the vote we all could submit on [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/oldforum-viewthread.jsp?tid=442067]the Minor League system[/url] changing. In regards to that rule change, I'd like to remind owners that the current season (2029) will be only our 1st season with System 5 implemented. I believe the hope is that this change should make it more difficult to perform the typical tactic of CP trades in the conventional sense. I do think this will help with turnover, because it will limit the damage done by owners like compton10101 at going "scorched earth" in attempting to win a championships with a good roster and then dumping it when it needs to be rebuilt. My opinion is if Admin says we have to merge, I will gladly merge. My issue is that I am fairly certain that I have yet to see an actual administrator come onto our League Boards and specifically tell us we are chosen for a potential merger. If someone is aware of such a Thread, please link to it.

For all my negative comments on League changes, I will counter with a reminder that [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/oldforum-viewthread.jsp?tid=436123]vickiroepke[/url] and to a lesser degree [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/oldforum-viewthread.jsp?tid=422489]Frunobulax[/url] have both put forth decent arguments about converting from to a Dynasty league to a Speed league which would involve some rule changes to make things more interesting. I personally am not sold on either option, but I know there was a lot of support for vickiroepke's ideas. Plus, vickiroepke was the kind of good owner that I do think would be worth trying to adjust some league rules in order to boost enthusiasm from owners that are currently uninterested.

Thanks, Michael

I would be okay with a merger as long as it doesn't change the system.

ok, based on the terrific information provided by Spicoli, I for one totally agree that merging 2 16 team leagues into 1 24 team league does not address the problem - I was assuming (incorrectly, I guess) that there were perhaps other leagues with the bot issue that plagues the DOM - and if that were the case we could merge into one, 100% fully staffed 16 team league.
In the case of the Dom - a couple of the rebuilding teams have live managers - and perhaps they could be offered a sweeter deal elsewhere in order to make the 16 team fit... just a thought (I also would be willing to move even though I've been here forever - depends on what's offered.

My main question with a 24 team league... 3 divisions??? with some kind of wildcard system, or are there just 2 12 team divisions?

Finally - regarding speed leagues - no thanks - I enjoy the pace of play just the way it is.

I might leave if a merger but I would strongly advise you to go ahead with it if its available.

I already play in 3 merged 24 team dynasty leagues and I dont really want to add another but think it is a fair way to eliminate a few dead teams.

I would just ask to have my renewal refunded if it happens. No hard feelings at all.

No hard feelings from me. My #1 objection has typically been that owners that have been staying renewed with the same franchise are assuming the rules won't suddenly change. Most cases of rule changing won't significantly effect the longterm plans of those owner. But something like Free Agency, which has been suggested before, would be like switching to checkers in the middle of a game of chess. My #2 objection has to do with the fact that historical stats don't carry over, which for me is a big part of my enjoyment when playing in a Dynasty League.

max, here's the [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/oldforum-viewthread.jsp?tid=385069]FAQ for the Ashburn Crawford League[/url]. Pretty sure all 4 24-team leagues have the same rules. Playoff teams consist of 2 division winners from each league (NL & AL) and 2 Wildcard teams from each league. I'm assuming the game engine then sets up seeding for the Division Series as is: 1)Division winner with best record, 2)Other Division winner, 3)Wildcard with best record, 4)Other Wildcard. Then, 1 vs. 4 and 2 vs. 3 in a best of 7 games. Home field thus being the only main advantage which I think is a little unfair, but it actually suits my typical gaming strategy.

I think I might have confused you a bit about the leagues that can be merged. Under my interpretation, the merging process is favorable in our league's current situation. In other words the fact that we have exactly 6 openings means the DDL is in a good position to merge with another league. We could match up with any of the 7 current Dynasty Leagues with 2 openings. The drop from 32 teams to 24 teams in effect eliminates 8 teams out of the 2 leagues. I mistakenly said 12 teams would be gone, but that was wrong based on how I have interpreted the rules. Essentially, 2 leagues with 4 Bot teams each could merge, or 2 leagues with 3 & 5, or 2 leagues with 2 & 6, or 2 leagues with 1 & 7.

I only asked as I am NOT interested in a merged 24 team league. I have left 2 other leagues that went the way of the merger. I left a private league that merged as I do not like the 24 team format. They do nothing to make the drafts even a LITTLE bit deeper and it makes it almost impossible to rebuild in a "reasonable" time period. I am paid in this league for 2 more seasons and will play them out as if nothing will change at all but if the merge does happen I will exit at the end of that time. Not trying to be an a s s , just letting you know where I am on this subject.
I like this young team I have and am enjoying a tough rebuild but going to 24 teams will make it even more difficult.

Since Spicoli brought it up I would just like to clear up that I was asking Chris what he plans to do about the constant stream of unowned teams on this site. I really am starting to think that once a threshold of say 6 teams for more than two seasons is reached the league is merged or dropped in the case of pay leagues. As for the DDL merging no it would not lead to Spicoli having to see me in the new league.
I would also like to point out that everyone of the 24 team leagues is full except for two teams in the Keller Stargell. 94/96 teams. And the real problem in the bigger league is maintaining a constant stream of talent unless you trade for it. The drafts in all of my leagues have not been stellar for at least the last three. Also Chris needs to develop a way for the Bot to evaluate trade offers and not let talent rot in the minors.
I wish you all the best of luck in whatever you decide or is decided but i think most of you agree that having some 60+ bots across all dynasty leagues is not good for business.

So, why do you then care??? Listen, you've played in the league before. You've threatened to "hold our league hostage" by not renewing thereby causing more DynastyBot owned teams. I wish I could hold you to your word of not joining the current or future version of the DDL, but I know I can't nor would I want to be so vindictive.

I don't like the fact that we have so many Bot-ted teams. What I do know is that the other Dynasty League in which I've owned a team, the Joe Medwick League, has not had as much of an issue with ownership. There are also a lot of other Dynasty Leagues that have great ownership rates. What does that tell me? A league that does a good job of building interest via good owners while limiting the damage done by constant turnover will have as much of a chance of succeeding as a merged 24-team league.

It might help to actually read the thread before just assuming that everyone is 100% in agreement with your "factual information" about the viability of Merged Leagues. They might not be completely honest, but 2 owners have already said they would in fact not be staying around for a merger, taxman and Lawman23. I would probably be on the fence of whether I wanted to stay around. So now, instead of having zero ownerless teams following the elimination of the DynastyBot teams, you would suddenly have another 3 teams to fill. I don't know the exact circumstances of the previous Merged Leagues, but I would guess that there was demand within both of the original leagues to merge. If Admin desires to eliminate the DDL because of low ownership, then I'd be willing to accept dealing with a merger. So far, we have yet to have any such demand; only people threatening the viability of our league if we don't change to something they want.

One can also argue that the lack of innovation or even listening to owners with good, easy to implement changes is a big reason for declining ownership. But you are right, the constant deletion of teams, each of which used to bring in revenue, is 100% the right way to run a business that will suddenly make more money. Just like how "trickle down" economics has been an inarguable success.

Oh, and if Admin tries to make DynastyBot's suddenly have the ability to trade, I will certainly be gone from the site. This would never work. Anyone who has played any form of League-based sports video game would know just how easy it is to game the AI to one's advantage. Succeeding at the game would be more about who can rip off the Bot teams than the current standard of drafting, developing, and making smart trades with human owners.

I just wanted to give some input about a 24 team merged.

I joined the VSL for a while. The main reason I joined because they had some of the top owners in Sim Baseball. I wanted to see if I could play with the big boys. Got to the playoffs a couple times but couldn't get past the 1st Round. Injury System 4 is a killer. The most injuries in Sim. Attached is a tread posted on their message board about the future of this league. Hope this helps.

Im holding out on renewing at this time until I know what lies ahead for this league. If a merger is coming I will choose to leave. Not a threat, just for your info. I think 24 team dynasty leagues are great but have enough of them already.

Please let me know as soon as some kind of decision either way is made.

In case anyone is wondering, I will be renewing even though it doesn't show on the league info page. I need to wait until my transfer goes through on PayPal, but it should be done by Labor Day.

That would leave only taxman as a current owner not returning. I can't say I don't understand your reasoning, but I wish we didn't have to lose another good owner. If so, you are leaving behind a nice roster that any incoming owner would be smart to buy up. You've got a nice blend of a competitive Major League roster to go with some intriguing Minor League talent.

Nice to see you decided to stay.

I'm actually waiting to see if I can stay on as the Cleveland owner. Some new owner bought it when it was listed before I could let Admin know I wanted to stay on. Admin is going to see if the other owner will back out.

I have softened my stance on this and would be willing to stick around. It seems that the site is heading in this direction for utter survival so getting out or getting used to it seem to be the inevitable choices.
There are 5 or 6 leagues RIGHT NOW with 3-5 open teams. This would be the time to contact admin and either do it now or after one more season.
The rotting teams in here are not getting the least bit better each year even with a high pick.
