The Seattle Volcanoes in the BETA League posted these final team stats:- [url=http://beta.simdynasty.com/standings.jsp]Standings for the 2137 season[/url]: 3rd place with a 92-70 record.

Has anyone ever seen such skewed averages on a winning team before?

Your team scored 430 runs and allowed 363, a difference of +67. Putting your team in context using Bill James Expected Wins formula, your team actually UNDERPERFORMED. They should have won 94.5 games.
In terms of absolute numbers, your team may well be the highest-performing bad-hitting team SD has seen. But, their W-L record is not surprising when viewed in the current anemic offensive context of the league.

The whole league looked like that this year. Six teams hit under .200, and another hit .201. As you might expect, seven teams had ERA less than 2.50 and an eighth checked in at 2.52.Your team scored 430 runs and allowed 363, a difference of +67. yeah, the code is slanted to the pitchers to the point where the hitters almost don't matter. almost.

One of the CG/ShO is a no-hitter.
This guy is good - 86 overall (97/76), but he's not the best pitcher I've ever had, especially considering his control. Crazy how he dominates right now.

((what was funny was this same post was over in check this out, and it took no time for there to be a post in support, somebody asking to have a vote in their league to go to the "new batter/pitcher engine." that they read about in "check this out." i am serious. this is what they want on payside. i mean, it would be the most popular thing ever. they eat it right on up. they want the pitchers to do this.))

I would seriously leave the site if this code was moved over to regular game side, my team, lost 102 games with a team ERA under 3.00 and my only hitter with max PVR, only 38 in contact, slugged .302 against RHP.

On the flip side 10 beta teams had ERAs under 3.00 something no major league team had, in fact Philadelphia would've been a pedestrian 11th in beta .

Only six qualified hitters had an OPS over .800 in the entire league, as a contrast in 2011 63 players in MLB exceeded an OPS of .800. The top team OPS in the beta league was .691 which would have been good for 23rd in MLB last year.On the flip side 10 beta teams had ERAs under 3.00 something no major league team had, in fact Philadelphia would've been a pedestrian 11th in beta .

Seriously, it is a "bit" lopsided right now. I can't imagine having (or worse, WANTING) results like this on purpose.

Giving up a run isn't required to blow a save, if a closer allows inherited runs to score they blow the save but don't affect their own ERA.

Well, Tworoosters already answered the 2nd question, for which I am grateful.
So I will gladly answer the 1st. Spezio didn't seem like starter material, due to the endurance factor. And this league seems to be somewhat pitcher-dominated, so my starters tended to go deep into the ballgame. Quite a few of the games didn't seem to require more than a closer to finish them off.
In hindsight, though, I might have been able to save poor Dell Riggs' arm had I used the rest of my bullpen a bit more.

he isn't talking about starting. he is talking about more innings from the pen. 60 or something is just wasting a good pitcher. they can pitch 175 from the pen and be completely awesome.

The question of 'Why didn't you use it more?' seemed to have something to do with the balance between using starters and using relievers in any given game. So I mentioned starters as part of my answer. My starters, the top 4 at least, seemed like they were pretty effective, and better than most of my relievers. It seemed like a good strategy to let the starter pitch deep into games.
It also seemed like a good idea to use my best reliever as closer, in order to preserve a victory when I had one going. During those seasons with Spezio as closer, he had as many or more innings than my other relievers, with few exceptions. I suppose I could have tweaked my settings to get Spezio as closer into the game in the 8th inning more often, but that probably would not have resulted in him getting close to 175 innings.

Mostly, it only exists because LaRussa tried something and it looked, on paper, like it worked. But if you believe that, look at how good a pither Bobby Thigpen REALLY was...or wasn't...and who his manager was when he set the record for single season saves.

I try to use my best guy as my long reliever, then go to my closer. Don't be afraid to let your closer go for 2 IP saves. This "LaRussa-ball" handling of bullpens is stupid and doesn't result in more wins (proven by studies).
