Offseason improvements

October 11, 2002 at 05:40PM View BBCode

I was reading in the rule book, and noticed that it said, "Minor league players, or players that didn't play any games at the major league level, are not eligible for any off season improvements."

So does this mean if I have an 20 year old, that played 150+ games in the regular season, then he gets injured and sent to the minors, and ends up there for the offseason, won't improve?

Basically what I'm saying is, does a player have to be on the Major League Roster to receive an improvement in the offseason?

I'm not positive, but I don't think it matters where the player is at the end of the season. I believe improvements are based on total ABs, and players currently in the minors will still improve in the off season based on the number of ABs they got while on the big squad. I'm sure Tyson will correct me if I'm wrong.

Another Question along the same line...

I know that improvements happen in the offseason, and players improve until they reach 27. (right?) So what happens when a player is 26 the whole seaon, then two days before the end of the season turns 27? Does he improve based on the number of IPs while he was 26, or does it count the number of IPs while he was 27, or does he not improve at all?

Also, what if he turns 27 during the offseason; is there some sort of cutoff date for when he has to be 26 to improve? (I hope this is clear enough.)

I had seen a question like this posted earlier and it was never awnsered. I would love to know what the awnser is though.

Unfortunately, I don't know the exact details of how the off-season improvements work -- we'll need to wait for Tyson on this one.

Here's the low down. If a player is around 27, he will be eligible for improvements. Its not an exact calculation, but basically any player born in 1929 or earlier will be elible this time (take the current year, and subtract 27). In other words, if he was 26 at the end of LAST season, he's still elible for improvements this year.

Also, if you have a veteran pitcher that is rarely used, he may actually gain a little bit in endurance. Not much, just a tad.
