Suggestion

Unless there is already a way to set it, can you add a way to set when you want your closer to come in? So that you could say, "I want my closer to come in in the (9th) inning, when I am ahead by (2) to (0) runs".

The numbers in parentheses are variable and can be changed. Can this be done, or is it already there and I am just missing it?

On the bullpen page, set the winning by runs to 4. Then on the part that has winning by less than 4 runs, make sure your closer is the first preference for 9th inning or later.

Some early impressions:

After the bug with when to pull SP's that were getting pounded got fixed, I noticed a higher than usual incidence of complete games, and my setup/closer guy has been seriously underworked.

It's still early in the season and things may yet correct themselves, but it appears as though the default settings for the pitching usage is somewhat different from the default ABE usage. I was fairly happy overall with how ABE handled pitcher usage with a few minor quibbles that are fairly easy to change with the current screens; I'd like to see the default setup for the pitcher control match what ABE was doing. For example, for the first time ever I witnessed SP's going beyond 9 IP (for both teams in the case I saw, both into the 11th). This seems excessive - perhaps the fatigue rating needs to be looked at for a quicker fall-off late in the game. I can't imagine any starter in this day and age going much beyond 9 IP what with managers becoming very aware of pitch count considerations.

I would also echo the request for another set of special circumstances being added for situations like no-hitters and shutouts where you might want to keep your starter in despite other considerations.

A button to restore settings to default should be added as noted earlier.

I'd also like to see more options for "certain circumstances" that cover various game situations - how many runners are on base (not just what base the lead runner is on), how many outs, how many runs ahead, etc.

I think it's great that we're getting greater control of managing our teams (can't wait for the baserunning stuff) but we should make sure that the default choices work well for those that don't want to have to deal with all these situational decisions. As I said earlier, I think ABE did a pretty good job with pitcher usage for the most part, so making the default for these screens match ABE's decision-making processes would be my preference.

I have to agree that complete games seem excessive and that I have sit not been able to find a way to get my setup/closer many innings (that is not a big deal).

My one big worry with the game controls is they can easily mess up a lot of statistics. For example, when the baserunning prefs. come out i am going to try and steal everytime I have a guy on base and I am going to be super agressive on the basepaths. With my teams great speed I would think that they would put up unreal SB totals. i think maybe we should have a little less control over our team. That way we can be agresive on the basepaths but not unrealisticly agressive.

Also the way player ratings are set up. Past preformance really doesn't effect future preformance. Therefore I would never want to pull my pitcher ace pitcher unless he is tired. This is why i think the idea that Chris has thrown around, with players having seasons, weeks, days, ect. where their ratings are slightly lowered. This will make the controls that let us put a pitcher due to underpreforming more useful.

That is the end of my rambeling and i only pray it made sence :P

I dunno.. if implemented properly, if you try this stunt against a team where both the catcher and pitcher have excellent arms, you may just find yourself increasing your Caught Stealing numbers....

Here's another issue - I had a situation in my last game with Milwaukee (game 60) that isn't really adequately addressed in the control screens: It's the bottom of the 9th, I'm down 3-1, 2 outs and my SP comes up to bat. In this case there's no way I'm leaving my last chance to stay in the game up to my SP batting.

The only thing on the control screens governing this is the clause in the 'Pitchers' screen called "Pitcher PH for offense". Regarding the SP, you have the option of deciding any inning from the 4th to the 10th you can PH for your SP if the tying or winning runs are anywhere from on-deck to in scoring position, or you can choose to not use the rule at all.

Now, this works fairly well if I have a stud SP working in a close game and I would rather have him in than be replaced with a RP, but only up to a certain extent. Certainly in the situation described above, with my last AB I don't want my SP batting.

At the least there should be a rule in place that states if you are losing and batting in the bottom of the 9th, your P (either SP or RP) will always be PH for.
