All Stars

April 07, 2003 at 03:51PM View BBCode

In an effort to speed up this page and as a possible area where the Tomcat Apache errors are being caused, I have changed the all star page to display only one league at a time, or the awards for both leagues.

Hopefully this will help out on the regular site.

You are viewing the raw post code; this allows you to copy a message with BBCode formatting intact.
I may be totally off here, but would it be possible to set up something that "logs" whenever someone has an Apache/Tomcat Error? I'm sure you sould be flooded with stuff, but you probably wouldn't need to let it run for long. This could possibly narrow down what pages people are landing on (or coming from?) that are causing the errors.

I myself haven't seen any huge difference made between different pages when I go to them, but with more data a pattern may emerge.

I don't know, just an idea.

Yeah, I've actually spent most of the morning on this problem.

I just did an optimization of the database on the regular site, and the all star page is flying. Maybe that was my problem. I'm gonig to hold off moving the allstar page over, because that may have solved the speed issues.

I've noticed that the error happened alot on the all star page. I've basically been surfing the site all morning and taking notes on when it happens.

It is not a memory leak, as previously thought. I did some testing in that area. It has something to do with how my site is configured/organized.

Seems that some teams have players on both leagues' all-stars.

Kansas City, Chicago Surfers popup alot.

Tyson, what if you avoided the problem by statically generating the All-Star page after each game? Since there's no sort options for it, there's no need to generate the page from live data every time someone wants to see it...

It seems like the NL all-stars are like the overall all-stars.

Oops, how does it look now?

Chris - if I was 100% sure the allstar page was causing the tomcat problems, I would probably do that. But I think the speed problems may have been worked out by the database optimization I did today. Still looking at the tomcat errors.

looks good!

It took me 5 tries to get the All-Star page to load - not Tomcat errors, standard HTTP 500 Internal Service Errors. It's been happening to me all over the site today.

If anyone cares, I liked the All-Star page better the old way, so if/when it's decided that it isn't slowing down the site, I would be all for combining the leagues and awards again.

Not sure if you are worried about this or not, but if statically generating the All Star page after each game would be to taxing to the site (especially during peak hours), then maybe it could be done just once a day, since the leaders don't change much on a game by game basis anyway.

It shouldn't take any longer to generate the page than one of us hitting it once...

I notice that the awards page is the slowest of the three... perhaps you can combine the league's All-Stars and just have a separate page for the awards...

I have a Single Season team as well, and it seems that the All Star page is loading just fine there. Can you change it back to the old way on the beta site whenever you get a chance Tyson?
