Next focus area for improvements - help me decide...
March 09, 2003 at 10:01PM View BBCode
Ok, all the between season stuff is finished and I'm ready to start tackling another area to improve the game. Here are some ideas, vote on which one you like to best or suggest another idea.
Draft
Give owners more control over which players are drafted in which round. So you could specify draft a power hitter with the 1st pick, a left handed control RP with the 2nd round pick, etc.
Game Control
Give owners a set of controls to manage in game situations. You would set your preferences and Abe would manage the game to your preferences. What percentage of the time should the runner from 2nd go? How should the closer be used? When should pitchers be yanked? How to use Pinch Hitters? I want to do this one at some point, instead of continually switching how Abe manages the game I'd open it up and let everyone decide how they want to do it.
New Waiver Wire and Trade System
Create a waiver wire system where a waived player would sits on waivers for two days. If more than 1 team claims him, he would go to the team with the worst record. Also, build in a way to protest trades in your league. And I would create an options system, where each player only has 5-6 "options". Every time he is sent to the minors, he would lose an option (unless he is injured, or I decide to create a disabled list).
Ability to set future game lineups
Create a way to set your lineup for the next 6-7 games. This way you can set substitutions ahead of time. I am committed to doing this before I speed up the leagues to 6 games/day.
Statistical Enhancements
Give owners a way to view splits on stats (lefties vs righties, last 10 games for a player, etc.) Also, add more comprehensive defensive statistics.
No matter which one I focus on, I will continue to make minor fixes here and there to other parts of the game. I just want to get your opinions about what you want to see. Any of the above items will take me several weeks to do, they are all about the same in terms of how quickly I could do them.

I say game controls but the future lineup would be nice because then we could go to 6 gpdm, which I would love. However I thing the game controls would far and away be the best thing to improve on.

Interactive Draft!....................
March 09, 2003 at 10:34PM View BBCode
This would be extremely simple to implement.Just post the new draftees a day before the draft begins. Then let each owner choose the player he wants(in correct draft order,of course).
I can see not doing this in expansion drafts,as it would take WAY too long. With only 5 rounds in the amatuer drafts they shouldn't take longer than a few days(maybe even completed in a day if you have 12 active owners). This should be very easy to implement and would make the draft a lot more fun.I don't see any downside to this.

My Personal Preference about the order...
March 09, 2003 at 10:47PM View BBCode
1) Draft
2) Game Control
3) Future Lineups
4) Statistical Enhancements
5) New Waiver Wire and Trade System
Though they are all pretty much even in my mind and I wouldn't complain if they are done in a different order.
Also, I'm hoping that one of the little fixes that you are planning to do is the pinch hitting stuff, even though I haven't noticed that much of a problem in my games, in some of the other games it seems that ABE has been quite inebriated while simulating them.

Draft control (for the Amateur draft) is most important in my mind for the Dynasty Leagues...it sucks to draft 5 3B to guarantee getting one in the 1st round.
Game control would be cool as well, not to technical but a few options that could work better for each persons team.
Future lineups to me seems like a waste of time...with injuries and extra inning games it's impossible to know for sure who's going to be able to play which game, having the R/L lineups takes care of most eventualites anyways. ABE does a decent job of putting a lineup together if someone is rested. What difference does it make if it's 6 games or 3 games a day? If the 6 are spread out over the course of the day it'll be no real difference than 3 games.
Split stats would be nice, but I'd also like to see a home park advantage as well, or some ability to specify the type of park you play in (one time only, can't be changed after it's selected).
Waiver wire is a great idea, Injury list is important as well...as far as the RP shuffle, the idea I had would be to make it so that when a P was called up to the majors he would be redline for the next game...I think that would eliminate most of the stupid shuffling that goes on.

One thing that makes it hard to vote is the amount of time each change will take. For example, while game control would be a good addition, if you could do the draft changes, improved statistical reporting and a waiver wire in the same amount of time, then I would definitely put it at the bottom of the list.
Above all the things you listed, I would like to see improvements made to the defensive logic. The way errors are handled isn't the best -- too many 1B errors, OF only dropping fly balls and not making throwing errors or turning a single into a triple, etc. Coupling this with improved defensive reporting (range factor, put outs, assists, etc.) would be my first choice. Anyway, besides this and assuming each fix will take approximately the same amount of time, here are my choices.
1) Draft changes. Even as simple as specifying which position to draft in which round would be a good start.
2) Game control.
3) Statistical improvements. I particularly like the defensive statistics, since it's really hard to determine the current impact of defensive ratings. Right now you can only look at errors, which is certainly an imcomplete picture.
4) Waiver wire.
5) Future lineups. I agree with Geoffrey -- to many variable to make this worthwhile. Better would be to allow owners to specify who fills in for a player when he is tired instead of letting ABE make that decision.

Each of the 5 options will take me roughly the same amount of time.

Draft

I voted for the draft first because it is something that works logically with the current setup of the game. Game controls will also be terrific, but they will significantly change the way we play.
My order would be:
1) Draft
2) Game controls
3) Lineups
4) Stats
5) Waiver wire

Two Ideas...
March 10, 2003 at 05:14AM View BBCode
1) A little note that will let you know which players ABE tried to improve and in which category, regardless of whether the players actually receive an improvement.
2) Combine the ideas of the Geoffrey's idea about fixing the "RP Shuffle" problem ("make it so that when a P was called up to the majors he would be redline for the next game"), and the "options" idea ("where each player only has 5-6 "options". Every time he is sent to the minors, he would lose an option (unless he is injured, or I decide to create a disabled list)"). An owner could "shuffle" each pitcher a set amount of times, and then after that number has been reached, every time after that has been reached and he is brought up, then he comes up "redline". (Did that make sense?)

i think it be really nice to see the waiver wire and the draft upgraded before the next off-season. the waiver wire isn't as big an issue with the effective limitations of the new changes, but following the draft there is still the feeding frenzy (i admit to my own complicity) on the left-overs. having a real waiver wire would stop that, and a more precise drafting system would be great to have as well. those two items would really help promote league parity.
game controls would be next on my list.
then line-ups or stats, depending on how much pressure there is to increase speed of play. i let abe do the subbing in the jr league and he seems to do pretty well. i wouldn't mind doing it myself, if the controls were there.
no matter what, all the changes look like good ideas, and should really improve the game when completed.

Draft!!
March 10, 2003 at 06:44AM View BBCode
Being able to control your future and the shape of your roster I feel is extremely important. Though I have not done an amateur draft yet. I agree with geoffrey13, I'm going to need some young SP's but I don't want to have to draft 5 SP's to make sure I get one in the 1st round because I would like some youth and depth at other positions as well.
After that:
2.Game control
3.Lineups
4.Stats
5.Waiver Wire
I too would like to see ballpark factors added and with these home/road splits.
One BIG reason I like the lineups is I really don't have time to make substitions everyday and when a guy needs a day off ABE just plops his backup in the same spot in the lineup. I for one don't want my C-/B- guy hitting cleanup when the 5 and 6 hitters might be B/B guys.

draft thoughts
March 10, 2003 at 06:53AM View BBCode
as far as the draft is concerned, I don't care about seeing the available players beforehand, I just want to know that my 1st pick will be a 3B, 2nd pick a SP, etc. As for the initial draft, there are some things that could change. Instead of the % system for youth, it should just be an age range selector, and one that can be different for different parts of the draft. So you could draft a team of vets to win right away, but have your minor leaguers be all young to build for the future. And just do away with the "best available" option, whoever is fool enough to take that option always gets an awful team. Junk it totally!

Best Available
March 10, 2003 at 07:13AM View BBCode
I'm not sure Best Available is totally awful, particularly if you can make trades where you end up with depth.
I chose it for the Jackie Robinson League and went for a very young team. I had 4 very good LF, including my top pick. I traded two of them for two pitchers apiece, all of whom are currently on my major-league roster. And 3 of those LF are among the top 5 in MVP this year (my guy is No. 1).
I tanked the first season to improve my team by playing young guys exclusively. I went 58-104. I got some good draft picks and picked up a few puzzle pieces off the waiver wire and in trades before the second season.
I'm 25-5 so far in the second season. It's a lot better than I expected to be at this point, but it tells me that Best Available does not preclude success in the near future. If you have a trading-friendly league, anything is possible.

My vote is for Game Control first. It would really add to the depth of the game to be able to tune in-game preferences in base-stealing/ sacrifices/ pinchhitting/pitcher selection etc.
Next would come future lineups. Being in a different timezone to most (GMT), this could be specially useful to me.
Simon
I guess I am in a minority but the current draft controls seem sufficient to me. In amateur drafts I prefer to get the best talent I can regardless of position. The subsequent trading to try to balance things up and fill the holes is part of the fun of the game. And now there is also the option to train a player in a new position. I quite understand if others feel different, its just not a priority for me.
As regards the options system, to stop the constant shuffling of pitchers between majors and minors, how about simply making a player demoted to the minors ineligible for promotion back to the majors for, say, ten days. Not perfect I know, but it might be an effective easy-to-do solution.

Something to consider
March 10, 2003 at 04:48PM View BBCode
Being new, I may not really understand. But I think it makes sense to improve something that you do every day. Improving the draft is a 1-time thing. While vitally important, it doesn't seem to have the same impact as the stuff you do over the full season.
Just a thought! (Thanks for asking our opinion)

draft
March 10, 2003 at 05:14PM View BBCode
the draft I'd like to see changed is the amateur draft, which is a key seasonal component in the Dynasty leagues. game controls would be nice as well I admit, but if you can't have some control over who you draft every season it doesn't make much difference what you can do with them

Definitely Game Controls

I'd like to be able to set my aggressiveness on relieving, basestealing, baserunning, bunting, hit and runs (both batter and runner), stuff like that. I'd be nice if we could set it for players as well as for the team.

its got to be game control...
March 10, 2003 at 06:10PM View BBCode
...but not so much what the end user can control, but the way Abe controls the game. In reality, what a manager controls is very minor. What I would like to see first is for the play-by-play of the game to be more realistic. Double plays like "batter grounds out to the second basemen, runner on third is heading for home, he is out" are just not realistic.
I've posted it here before, and I stand by it...the process of taking extra bases, or creating an out trying, has very little to do with speed, or game preferences, and much more to do with the way a ball is hit. If it were me programming, I would make a single advance a runner one base is some instances, two bases in some instances, and a third instance that looked at things like the speed of the runner, the manager's preference, and the arm of an outfielder. But the third instance would happen very rarely...1 in 10, not even that often.
And then I would do the same for doubles, ground outs w/runners on third, & fly balls with runners on.

Someone made a point about they would always want to take the best player in the draft rather then a specific position. I cannot agree more. In fact the main preference I would set for the draft is "don't draft a RP or 1B". If you really need a guy at a certain position then you can always trade the guy you got in the draft because he should be better then any player drafted after him. I am sure theat is confusing but I need to get that in the air.
