Gee Whiz information

I've read thru the rules a couple of times and there are things discussed on the board that seems to be common sense but I cant find a reference for it. Such as the 500 ab's is the magic number for some sort of advance but...also, if I have a 23 year old starter in the minors, who is a B- overall with a B- B C for the other attributes, will he "develop" faster if I allocate him 5 points and keep him in the minors or bring him up and have him take his lumps? Are there any more gee whiz tidbits that arent in the book that you all know and take for granted? thanx

That 500 AB thing is the old system. Now guys will get a chance to improve for every 10 ABs or so -- meaning there's no longer such a make or break threshhold.

As for your 23 year old -- he's better in the big leagues. My rule of thumb is that anyone under 21 is better in the minors.

Some other things off the top of my head (as a disclaimer, these are my opinions, not facts).

Power is more important than contact for hitters. Speed of B or higher is valuable. Lower than that and a player will be a station to station baserunner.

Health doesn't matter much for pitchers, although don't overlook it for position players.

For pitchers, control is more important than velocity. Put your best reliever in the setup/closer role if you've got a good team -- that's where he'll get the most innings. If you've got a weaker team, he'll get the most innings in middle or long relief.

So, Bob, why do you have an 18yo and a 20 yo as your top two starters in the JR League if under 21 is better in the minors?

Get some lousy old guys in there so I can overtake you :D

a couple things:

as far as i know it still takes 500 ab for a position player to improve in health.

tyson said in his post summarizing changes that it was 10 plate appearances for a chance to improve.

health , now, cannot ever improve for pitchers.

In fact, health can get worse for pitchers, can't it? If a young pitcher works 200+ innings several years in a row or something. I thought I saw a discussion about that.

Yes, health can decrease for pitchers. And, as far as I know, it will NOT increase for position players, ever.

will improve slightly if a player goes a season without being injured. I still think the whole "health" system we have is poor...at least don't call it health, call it endurance. In the real world when a player gets hurt he comes back healthy, right? And it's extremely unlikely that guys will miss 1 out of every 5 games because they're tired either. Some players might have a higher probability of getting hurt, the wear and tear of a long season might increase that chance as well. I'd like to see 2 ratings, one for endurance (for a position player) and one for injury chance. And I'd like to see health change much more dramatically in a player...when someone comes back from an injury it would stand to reason that they would be healthier, right? So a C ranked players who was out for 40+ days should come back as B+ or so. Then that might over the course of a season shrink down again as the players plays a lot of games and gets worn down. There should always be players who get hurt a bit more because they play a lot, but there should also be those players who get a freak injury out of the blue despite an A+ health, they might get hit by a pitch or whatever and miss 20-30 games as well.

Geoffrey is right on target here. I also think we need a lot more short-term injuries. It's very common in the majors for a guy to strain a groin, twist an ankle or come down with the flu. He'll miss 3 or 4 days, but won't even go on the disabled list. Along with this we need to cut back the number of games a guy misses due to fatigue. I don't care how fragile you are, nobody has to sit and rest after playing 5 games.

Oh, and redcped, I'm starting those guys specifically so I can win the pennant. I hate to stunt their development, but they're the best I've got and I'd rather hurt their development than hurt my chances at whipping you. :D

boy bob you don't care who you hurt to get another title do you? lol.

i wouldn't mind seeing some new handling of health either. it isn't on tyson's list of coming enhancements, but perhaps thereafter. geoffrey has been advocating that for a long time, and i have to say he's right.

as far as currently though, unless tyson changed it, and i thought that he said he did not, position players go up one-third letter grade ( B+ to A-) if they play a full season (500abs). i believe that they do have to avoid injury though. and, they have to be 27 or under at the end of the season.
