OffSeason

February 07, 2003 at 03:02AM View BBCode

Ok, I'm going to do a test run of the OffSeason changes. I took some of Chris's concepts and built it in so that there is a sweet spot around 25 years old for improving major leaguers.

I don't have the patience to get my test league up to the end of a season, so I'm going to run the OffSeason multiple times for the Beta league. When I'm happy with the results, I'll re-run it for real. Check back here for info.

Having all the new draftees is screwing it up, I'm going to go for it and you guys can help me analyze what happens.

Ok, the offseason has run. I'm starting to look at it. I'm not going to bother with the Amateur Draft yet.

I'm looking at Mojo Supertone and Keith Green again. Here is what happened this time:

Green (18 years old) - 1 improvement at speed (was 65), 3 improvements at contact vs lefty (was 44), 1 improvements at contact vs righty (was 57). 2 improvements at power vs lefty (was 28). 1 improvements at power vs right(was 41).

That looks okay to me, considering his age.

Next, ROY Mojo Supertone (22 years old):
0 improvement in speed(was 98).
2 in contact vs lefty (was 69)
5 in contact vs righty (was 51)
0 in power vs lefty (was 68)
1 in power vs righty (was 55)

He did improve in one area he was lacking (contact vs righty).

And what about Mongo (25 years old)?
6 in speed (was 41)
1 in contact vs L (was 76)
8 in contact vs R (was 65)
4 in power vs L (was 66)
3 in power vs R (was 43)

I think these are good results.

If you have any guys you'd like to know more about, let me know and I'll look a few more up. I think the results are good enough to zip through 10 seasons quickly and see how it pans out.

I'll look up a couple pitchers and make another post...

Here are some pitcher stats.

Pat Helfrich, 25 year old RP (50 IP)
Velocity + 2 (was 87)
Control + 3 (was 36)
Endurance, no change

Dave Alexander (25 years, 150 IP)
velocity + 1 (was 85)
Control + 2 (was 38)
endurance + 1 (was 66)

Lionel Jefferson (23 years, 228 IP)
velocity + 1 (was 94)
control + 1 (was 69)
endurance + 6 (was 56)

Brad - do you have the stats on minor league improvements? Wondering if I've made it too hard in general for pitchers to improve (offseason and coach points).

(is anybody out there???)

I do know that my pitchers never seem to improve, but I have no stats on this....

I think we should make it easier for pitchers to improve, but add Range and Bunting into their improvement pool to offset the additional improvements a bit. (Maybe make Range and Bunting less likely to improve than Control, Velocity and Endurance....)

2 more pitchers...

Idris Muhammad (26 years old, 181 IP)
Velocity + 4 (was 62)
Control + 1 (was 49)
Endurance + 5 (was 55)

Mel Moore (25 years old, 238 IP)
Velocity + 2 (was 60)
Control + 5 (was 55)
Enduracne + 4 (was 94)

These were good to see, maybe a tad low still though.

In the last beta league we did see pitchers become increasingly dominant as the seasons went on (in significant part because of those inflated drafts, but not totally). Seems like the more modest pitching improvements might make more sense because perhaps the improvements that do occur have more impact. Anyway, might be a reasonable thing to leave in place and test out. Certainly the amount of improvement we saw with Muhammad and Moore seems quite reasonable.

A quick look at SP and I am seeing some old guys get pretty good improvements. Jorge Ben of NYN is now 31 and his control and Vol. both went from B to B+ I am sure they were close but tyson if you could take a look at him (i will get his card here in a sec.) it may be a problem.

more stuff

February 07, 2003 at 04:15AM View BBCode

i noticed the total # of B rated or better pitchers has gone DOWN. I think that is great, because in the old beta, talent shot up too fast. More analisis to come

So far looking at pitchers the only problem i see is player improving a lot when they are really old. But that is based only on one player so I could be wrong. Aside from that teenagers are not improving a whole lot, which is good overall, but bad for my team:(

I also have a 31-year-old pitcher -- Joe Knerr -- who went from B to B+, although I understand from an earlier post by Chris that with the new logic that can happen if the guy was right on the fringe of jumping a letter grade. May have gotten a 1-point improvement someplace which was enough.

Otherwise, at a glance at least the improvements seem to be in line with what we've seen in the past, more or less. No outrageous jumps or complete failure to show any improvement, at least from what I can tell.

more on pitching

February 07, 2003 at 04:25AM View BBCode

I am seeing more and more pitchers in the 30 YO range go up a bit the more I look. Maybe they were all borderline, but i don't think many pitchers really get better after 30 (Curt Schilling and Randy Johnson are exceptions)

Quick look at player rankings for RP shows a lot more improvements. I think we may need to tweak those #'s

position players

February 07, 2003 at 04:39AM View BBCode

It looks like we have some old guys (Art Smith) making pretty big jumps and the overall number of solid players ("B" or better) made a big jump (72-94). I think we may start to see an oppisite of the old beta and have a league dominated by pitching if this were to keep up.

Overall

February 07, 2003 at 04:51AM View BBCode

To sum up what I saw in offseason improvements.

SP-Looked very good except for guys over 30 YO going up more then i would like to see.

RP- Might be getting to good overall, i think the number that we are dividing by to determain the number of improvement chances is too small.

POSITION PLAYERS- In realation to the pitching it seemed to go up too much. Same deal as the RP as far as that goes. Also I saw some old guys (30+) get pretty good improvements, which i think should be changed.

On a side note I think the guys improving untill 29 YO is GREAT (but my team is going to suck for even longer then i thought) This will give us some late blommers and all of that good stuff. However I think improving after 30 YO should be super rare.

Seems like everything can be fixed by tweaking the numbers and we are definatly on the right track:D

I ment to say "a league dominated by hitting", sorry.

retirements

February 07, 2003 at 05:49AM View BBCode

I've had my 33 yr old 2B who played 162 games last year RETIRE! This seems totally not in keeping with how the retirements have worked in the past, and needless to say he wants to keep playing!!

more retirements

February 07, 2003 at 05:52AM View BBCode

A quick look at retirement seems to show that almost everyone over age 33 hung it up, regardless of # of games. The NL Cy Young winner, my 2B, the AL top fireman.....not good!

improvements after 30

February 07, 2003 at 06:08AM View BBCode

I don't think that it should be such a rare thing for certain parts of a players game to get better with age. Certainly some players will become more patient at the plate, draw more walks, etc...they may lose some power but gain contact. Pitchers will also tend to lose velocity as they get older but also gain control. You could easily have a guy go from A+ vel and B Control to B velocithy and A control after the age of 30, think of a guy like Frank Tanana who went from being a power pitcher to a junkballer.
Look at Barry Bonds who has hit for a higher average the last couple of season then he ever has. So it's not such a rare thing really, just shouldn't be in every category.
andrew

February 07, 2003 at 06:15AM View BBCode

Barry Bond is one player out of a thousand. That is very rare.

Also i didn't notice the retirement thing but that definatly needs to change IMO

I had way too many retirees as well. 1 SP and 2 RP's
