Draft will be re-run shortly
February 12, 2004 at 09:51PM View BBCode
I've run hundreds of test drafts over the last few days. I am going to re-run the draft for the 2 beta leagues. Let me know your impresssions on the overall talent of the league - particularly as compared to some of the leagues that are further along.
The last 6 drafts I ran produced these results:
A- or better Batters / A- or better Pitchers
27 / 31
44 / 40
39 / 37
43 / 36
39 / 37
42 / 39

Looks pretty good. The only thing that looks a little bit of (compared to other leagues) is the number of solid youngsters. In most leagues it seems there are at least a few B- rated teenagers, maybe that is one of the problems though, so I would say that this draft looks good.

Long term league will start 15 games per day this evening. Short term will play 3 games per day.
The only thing I can say to look out for is the new RP fatigue system. I can't remember the specifics, but the jist of it is that D, D-, and F endurance relievers should be able to face more batters, and C and above guys should face less batters before tiring.
This may lead to less big late innings as well.

Short Term League
I think this draft looks pretty good. Looks like 43 A Pitchers and 31 batters. Only three of them are 26 or under.
One thing I've noticed, I tend to set my endurance points pretty high. It seems like I'm still getting almost all D and below endurance on my RP. My Starters all have pretty good endurance. Does the endurance factor not mean as much on the RPs??

Doug - when you selected a RP, is there someone selected after that RP that you think you should have selected instead?

This looks like the most balanced draft so far, if the intent was to try to create a league that looked like it have been running for 5-8 years. The number of A and B players seems pretty similar to what I've seen after 5-6 seasons in my two leagues.
I drafted best available again, with no points on youth, and got a pretty solid team of guys 28-32. We got drilled 9-1 in our first game, however.:)
Should we assume this league is going to play 162 games, and make trades if we want?

Don't know if this is just me or if anybody else has noticed but the all star page on the short league is way wacked out. It's listing guys more than once, guys with 1011 votes beating guys with 36,000 something and there is a blank spot at #2 all star SP on the NL side. Just reporting this.

The AS page is always wacky at the start of the season. Give it a few games and it will look better.

the lack of young talent will set the long term league up to be almost totally pitching dominated within the first 5-8 seasons, depending on amateur drafts...hard to believe that there are only 2 A- or better players under 25 years of age! With slower improvements as well the chances of having any decent talent compared to the initial will be slim..still, should be interesting to see how it shakes out.

It seems that players chosen after my RP that had higher endurance were lower overall and in other areas. I guess it just balanced out.

This boxscore is fairly indicative of a team I would not draft, despite my prefs:

Looking over my team, I'd say that it is not 'Totally Balanced' (my pref) given that I have a few decent bats and a couple good young pitchers, yet no P's drafted till Round 8 (that's EIGHT). My minors are a disaster: not a soul worth putting CP's on, and they don't match up to my prefs in terms of Power v. Contact and Velocity v Control.
In addition, I somehow have that hideous "Rookie" avatar under my name in my post, despite the fact that I have NEVER placed an avatar in my profile, nor is there ANY URL address of that avatar shown on my Edit Profile screen.
An all-round YUCK from these quarters.

Did we redo the ratings in regards to the posts or what? And does the new system come with the whole auto-avatar thing that pwj is talking about? I've seen that a lot recently with guys having things like Triple AAA and Double AA.

By the way the all star page did clear up. I had never noticed that is was weird in the beginning. Thanks andrew.:)

There is a new rating system -- see the Latest News forum for details. There are also default avatars based on your rating. These are only used if you do not have an avatar in place already.

Short Term Gripe
February 13, 2004 at 01:41PM View BBCode
This boxscore shows a pinch-hitting problem. It's not a bug because the program seems to be running as it should. Nevertheless, this is a problem that shows an unrealistic response to a realistic situation.
Look at the bottom of the 6th inning: Down 3-1, bases loaded, 2 outs, the SP bats for himself and, predictably, makes an out. In the top of the 7th, he comes in and, predictably, gives up a couple runs. This is an old gripe of mine. Again, not a bug, but a situation in which a great deal of managers would pinh-hit for the pitcher and have a fresh arm to pitch the 7th. I'm hoping to see some sort of option whereby pitchers can be lifted for pinch-hitters in crucial pinch-hit situations, even if the SP has not given up his quota of hits/runs/base runners. We have that option now, but only if you're down by 2 (and, admittedly, if I'd had that option on for this game, I would have had a PH, but I never turn that option because it does no good when you're down, say, by 4 and your SP goes ahead and hits for himself in the 7th inning with 2 runners on).
In the bottom of the 9th of this game, we see an illustration of that very same problem. Down by 4 in the bottom of the 9th, my RP hits for himself. Again, a situation when most (er, ALL) managers would have a PH in there. Throwing out a RP to hit for himself in the 9th when you're losing is an insult to the other team and to the fans and to your own bench players.

New Topics?

I read we can't open new topics, but my last post, I think, should be under a different thread than one about rerunning the draft. Will we be able to open new topics?

Is there a role for Development?
As of this morning (and not taking into account players already waived) here's the breakdown for youngsters still on the teams in the Short Term League.
SP: 1 teen and 11 between 20 and 23;
RP: 1 teen and 4 between 20 and 23;
1B: 2 teens and 7 between 20 and 23;
2B: 2 teens and 7 between 20 and 23;
3B: 2 teens and 10 between 20 and 23;
SS: 5 teens and 11 between 20 and 23;
OF: 8 teens and 23 between 20 and 23.
Development of the younger players has always been a key component of SD and it seems to me that this is an important aspect in looking at the talent distribution and talent inflation problems. This, of course, may just be a reflection of the current owners settings.

You can start new topics, just not in Beta News. The place to open new topics is in Beta Issues & Suggestions. This is kind of Beta's version of Report Problems and Suggest Enhancements combined into one board.
pwjs questions - the first situation can be resolved by using the settings for Pitcher PH for Offense. Use the 6th inning or later choice, and Winning or tying run is on base.
The second scenario is a bug that I thought I had fixed. Let me look at the game log. The only reasonable explanation that I can think might have been that you did not have any other pitchers left on the bench.
poppa - I didn't change anything in the code that would create players differently. But it will be interesting to see how this trends over the coming seasons - can we call it Age Deflation?

haha, maybe it's because I haven't slept yet. But I just busted out laughing on this one. Sorry pwj.
This is definately a bug because his back avatars haven't changed. Normally when you change your avatar, your new avatar appears in all your previous posts. He shouldn't have two different avatars showing under the same user-id. Personally I'm still baffled at what the point of all this was.
