A charitable side project for a Friday

March 31, 2006 at 10:36PM View BBCode

I spent a few hours today on a little side project.

So I read [url=http://www.calacanis.com/2006/03/06/firefox-mozilla-corporation-mozilla-foundation-made-72m-last/]this story about Mozilla and Google[/url] a few weeks back and was taken aback by how much FireFox earns from Google.

So with the tricks that I know, I registered a domain and setup my own search engine that uses Google. You can see it at http://www.Googity.com - the name is a combo of Google and Charity.

I have no idea if this falls within Google's policies, if they will allow it or shut it down, etc. So as they say, "there's only one way to find out".

Anything I get out of this, I'm donating to The Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation and The National Breast Cancer Foundation.

If you're willing to try this experiment, use http://www.googity.com instead of Google for your searching - it will bring the same results. Also, I setup a Search Engine for FireFox so you can get it in the upper right corner.

Thanks for reading this.

Basically, when you click paid ads that come up during the search, Google pays me.

I can't really spell it out like that on the website, or encourage users in any way to click on ads, because its against their Terms of Service. But that's how it works.

That's so awesome....

You would think google would not want that but I guess they still take some of it and stuff so they don't mind. I will make sure to use that instead of regular google. There's no way you could get images or anything is there?

Google doesn't really care because they get paid pretty well for those ads running. Usually a first page ad on a high profile search will earn Google 50¢ per click or more.

So if I googled sim dynasty and clicked it a bunch of times it would charge tyson however much? I'm not saying I would do that but is that what would happen?

No, there are two things that come up when you search under google. The first is the regular listings that take up most of the screen. If you'll notice however, there are also links on the right hand side. Those are the paid ads that we're talking about here.

Oh, ok. So what ebay has and stuff.

Not like ebay. Ebay has actual stuff to sell. These ads will take you to another website. Often times the item for sale on the site isn't something that is "real" in a physical manner but information "How do I earn 50K a day on the internet" or "I cured my acne in 3 days without drugs or creams and you can to" type of books. Sometimes it'll be porn sites that collect a fee when you register. Occassionally you'll come across something that is a real product rather than an informational product but I think that would be the minority of cases.

Well, ebay has one of the ads along the side too usually. It says like whatever it is you googled and "you can find it on ebay" with a link. I know there's other stuff over there too.

As my boss just went over the google search account he set up for the company, with me. At least one account goes like this:

You pay per click through (that is when a person clicks on the sponsored site link). For us it is 9 cents a link. You can also set a maximum amount you are willing to spend and we did so (as we are testing out google and its results), putting our max at 100 dollars a month worth of clicks.

Just thought you might find that interesting.

We're up to about $56 in earnings. They call this the Adsense Program.

dominus, you're referring to the AdWords program. Which program you use depends on whether you are the payer or the payee. We spend a lot of cash on ads through the Adwords program.

Yahoo has a similar program, and MSN just started one as well (similiar to Adwords that is).
