Pats vs. Colts
November 07, 2005 at 08:41PM View BBCode
Anyone have any thoughts on tonight's big MNF game?
Even though it would be in the Steelers' best interest for the Colts to lose, I'm rooting for a thorough whipping of the Pats. As a Steelers fan, I'd much rather take my chances with Indy IN Indy, than the Pats ANYWHERE (I'm still upset at losing to them earlier this season. No excuse for it. It's all mental at this point, after losing so many times to them, especially in 2 AFC champ games in Pgh)
Time for the Colts to break the hex and send the Pats back to .500 ...

Everyone knows Manning cant beat Brady, especially when the game is nationaly televised.

youngallstar --- "everyone knows" Manning has not beaten Brady and the Pats ... yet ... but at some point he's going to.
And I think tonight's the night he will. The Colts shouldn't feel any pressure, since they have the best record in football and a loss here wouldn't do them too much harm. The Pats NEED the win. It'll be interesting to see how each team responds.
I think this will be the type of game like last year's regular season Pgh-NE game, where the Steelers got on top early and never really let the Pats back into the game.
I'm thinking ...
Colts 27, Patriots 14

I completely disagree. You dont think the Colts feel pressure to beat the team that has dominated them over the past several years, on nationally televised t.v no less?!
You sir, are nuts
The Colts will not prove a thing, to themselves or their fans, until they beat New England, no matter how good their record is

what does national TV have to do with anything????
Yes, it's exciting that they're on Monday Night Football... but they've all done that many many times before. Yes, you get a charge of excitement coming out of the locker room, etc. ... but these are pros, and once the ball is snapped, it doesn't matter where they are.
Anyway, hypothetically, if the Colts lose tonight and win the rest of their games to go 15-1, you don't think they will have proven anything to anyone??!!!
They will have proven they can win as many games as any team ever has in the regular season. It'll be a huge accomplishment. Their season doesn't hinge on winning tonight.
Just like whoever loses the Steelers-Colts battle in a couple weeks (Week 11 or 12, I think) will still be in good shape. It won't be the end of the world.
There is still so much time to play in the season and so much can happen.
Having said all that, I still firmly believe the Colts have matured -- winning games early on without putting up tons of points, being pt and running the ball when it would be more fun to toss it all over the place -- to the point where they'll go out and get the job done tonight.
If I'm wrong (and it has happened before!) then hats off to the Pats, who will have pulled a houdini act again.

If the Colts lose tonight, and win the rest of the season to go 15-1 and than face the Pats in the playoffs the Colts will be at a huge pyschological disadvantage.
I dont think the Colts will hold up under the pressure of tonights game.
Pats win 24-17 in a close one.

finally, I read a piece by Clayton, where he already has the Pats as division champs and in the playoffs ...
there are still EIGHT weeks left. It's ridiculous to say just because the Pats have a 1 1/2 game lead that the race is over.
I was surprised to read that from as good a reporter/analyst as Clayton.
We've played half a season. Anything can happen in the second half. How many times have the Dolphins started 6-0 or 6-1 then crumpled in the second half to miss the playoffs?!! How about Carolina starting terribly then winning, what, 7 games in a row.
Sit back, relax and see what happens ...

Of course the Patriots are going to win the division; the Jets are ruined by injuries, the Bills have QB and injury problems as well, and the Dolphins will never be taken seriously as long as Gus Frerotte is under center.
The plain and simple fact is: Peyton and the Colts drop a turd when under pressure. They've done it in the past, and until Peyton proves he can deliver when the spotlight's on him, the Colts will always drop a turd.

I'm going to the game, it's going to be amazing. I'm not sure the Pats can win the their D, but regardless, the game should be real fun to watch. We love watching Peyton throw his hands up like a 3rd grader playing kickball at recess, should be more of the same.
Edgerrin scares me tonight though.

You can't get EVERY monkey off your back, Cubs.
But here's one Peyton has been able to shake. Now that he knows he can beat 'em, can he do it again if the situation calls for it?

Yes, he can beat them again. Both teams are headed in different directions.

what an awful game. I ended up leaving at the end of the 3rd quarter. The Colts not only have more talent, which they've also had in the past, but they are putting it together as a full team. The better team won.
I don't think this means the Pats are done though, I see a 10-6 finish and a win in the 1st round, after that, we'll wait and see. Once they get their injured guys back, I think they are the 3rd best team in the AFC behind Indy and Denver.

The Pats are now 1 game ahead of my Browns. Just some food for thought.
I hate Belicheck - probably always will. So keep that in mind when you read the rest of my thoughts.
Why don't they have an Offensive coordinator? Is Bill calling the plays? On paper, this team is a 4-4 team at best. They just don't have much talent. I don't think Beicheck's magic wand - or whatever the experts use to call this a playoff team - will be enough this year. But I'm starting to wonder if the magic wand belonged to Weiss or Crennel?
Looking at their schedule so far, they've had some pretty tough games so 4-4 doesn't look that bad and they'll probably make the playoffs. But I think they'll lose in the 2nd round.

Belicheck had basically said that since he had a hand in all the play calling that there wasn't an emergency need for an OC. Sounds like a shot to Weis, but I don't know.
What I miss about Weis is that he'd come up with an aggresive plan almost every week and it worked, all the time. Now it's dump-offs, quick-ins, quick-outs, screens. Brady hardly ever throws the ball over 20 yards anymore, which is why their run game is non-existent.
The Pats need to stretch the field, open up running lanes by using the pass and take some chances...and that's just offense.
The defense is terrible. It was below average before the season and with all the injuries, it's just terrible. The secondary can't stop anyone, the front four can't pressure the QB and our LB's don't know how to take away the middle.
To be honest, with this group and the schedule of the first 8 games, I am happy with 4-4.

My memory is a little hazy because I try to forget about that era - but I think that's what started the collapse in Cleveland when Belicheck fired the offensive coordinator and started calling the plays himself. I might be thinking of Shottenheimer though.
He could probably have more time to piece together the defense each week if he didn't have to be the offensive coordinator too.

By no means do the Pats have the division sown up ... with 8 games left they have a ONE game lead on Buffalo and Miami. I believe the Bills will give the Pats a run for their money down the stretch (I don't buy Miami as a legit contender).
Every good thing must come to an end ... and I believe this is the season that New England's amazing run comes to an end. It can't last forever, and the Pats have just been hit so hard in so many areas (coaches leaving, major injuries, difficult schedule).
If they do manage to win the division, I see them being the No. 4 seed, which means they will get to at least host a playoff game. But that doesn't necessarily mean anything, cause they could easily be playing a team like the Chargers (Denver wins divsion, SD is the WC) ... and this year, comparing the players each team has, San Diego is simply the better team of the 2.
Or, if by some miracle the Bengals win the North, the Pats could end up playing the Steelers (who could potentially be like a 12-4 WC)
Anyway, the Colts look fantastic at this point in the season and if they remain unbeaten through the Steeler game (I think that would make them 11-0) they just might win em all

1. Colts - (bye)
2. Broncos - (bye)
3. Steelers
4. Pats
5. Chargers
6. Bengals
Steelers host the Bengals - Steelers win
Pats host the Chargers - Pats win
Broncos host the Steelers
Colts host the Pats
That's how the AFC will shape up. I'm not picking the AFC champ game though.
