Ugh, no Big Ben!

November 03, 2005 at 03:44PM View BBCode

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported that Roethlisberger will have knee surgery, and miss games with Green Bay and Cleveland. Batch will get the start this week. I guess if he has to miss time, this is a fine 2 week strech to do it. Playing at Green Bay is tough, but they are playing poorly right now. Cleveland is still Cleveland. Hope they can get through it with two wins.

GB won't be easy even though GB looks bad on the field. Home crowd is hungry for a win, and Favre has to put some more wins on the board to keep his legacy alive. Cleveland might be a sleeper too. Pitt's D has to keep their offense in both of those games. I think they can do it.

I was a bit concerned about the GB game BEFORE I heard about Roethlisberger not playing. I think they'll get er done, but it'll be a tough game. I hope it's on TV in Columbus. Browns still get top priority here since their return. Now that Bengals are a "contender", they should get top billing, but haven't yet. The Browns are down right pathetic. I thought Romeo was get them standing a bit taller this season though. I guess things get worse before they get better. Steelers could probably bring Mark Malone back and beat the Browns.

Yeah, these are two of the easiest games on their schedule. Besides, all the Pittsburgh QB needs to do is turn around and hand the ball of to Bettis and Parker in the backfield. The loss of Roethlisberger for these two games is one of the most overhyped stories considering that he gets too much credit for their success already. He manages the game and has a great running game and defense to help him out. I'm pretty sure that Charlie Batch can manage the game well enough to slide by two of the worst teams in the league.

I don't think it's ever that simple. The Steelers have been winning and losing games by the skin of their teeth, and he was critical in that final drive against the Ravens. Which is not to say they can't win without him, but it's no surprise that they waited until the easier part of the schedule.

He's also completed less than 10 passes in wins before. His success as a rookie was overblown to begin with because he had all the pieces around him to succeed: three solid recievers (Burress, Ward, and Randle El), good backs, a great line, and a great defense. He still played well but he had play makers around him where as someone like Eli Manning didn't. So he gets labeled as crucial to the Steelers success when he really wasn't as critical as it seems. Also, Baltimore (even minus Ray Lewis) has a pretty good defense. The defenses of Green Bay and Cleveland are no where near the caliber of Baltimore's defense. All Batch has to do is manage the game and protect the ball. Bettis and Parker will be able to tear apart those defenses. It's hard to sleep on a Brett Favre lead team, but without Walker, Ferguson, Green, and Davenport they are severely weakened. Favre will have very little offensive weapons. Favre has also shown a tendency, especially late in his career, to force things when nothing is there which often leads to turnovers.

I've always had some mild interest in the Steelers, because my family is from the Pittsburgh area. My grandmother is a huge Steelers fan.

And I'll agree the Big Ben thing is overhyped. That became obvious to me when I saw countless billboards for him on the Pennsylvania turnpike last year. But that doesn't mean the Steelers don't need him. Which would be even more true if they'd lost last week and were 4-3. They have some wiggle room, it would seem.

And when Big Ben sucked in the playoffs last year, so did the Steelers.

I am happy right now. Penningtons hurt so I can laugh at jetpac, now another young great quarterback is hurt and Manning is still playing so great and making the plays even with only one good reciever and he's not even that good (Buress). Big Ben getting hurt is big for the steelers. I say they lose to Green Bay but win against Cleveland.

Pittsburgh blows

Dallas is a bigger story in general than anything coming from Pennsylvania these days. Well, maybe the Eagles sucking it up this year is a bigger story. If Dallas hadnt had late game blow ups they would be 7-1 this year. maybe even 8-0. Drew Bledsoe is over the hill my arse

But Dallas still lost. Teams that have good records play the entire game, and usually win. Teams like Dallas, that are young, and will probably be in the Super Bowl, in a few years, blow leads late in the game and not win.

Skier. Don't talk about Roethlisberger not being important. The last time he didn't play, and Maddox did, Tommy single handedly lost the game agains't Jacksonville. True anyone can hand the ball off and rely on the defense. But you have to be extra special to fumble away the ball and throw interceptions that cost your team a game that could have been won. Ben may be overhyped, but the Steelers haven't had a QB worth a crap since Bradshaw was playing. Pittsburgh fans are happy to have him. He was drafted by a team that put him in a favorable situation. If success as Steelers QB should be so easy, why didn't Maddox do better than 6-10 in his last full season? Why did Ben step in and lead team to the AFC Championship game? He's 18-2 as a starter. Has any QB done that well since the beginning of last season?

Big Ben

I would go so far as to say that at this point in the season, Big Ben should merit some attention as an MVP candidate (as should Carson Palmer).
Now, I still think Peyton Manning is the most valuable, and best, player in the league. But with what Roethlisberger has done so far, leading the league in passer rating, and having a fantastic 11:2 TD to Int ratio, he should at least be in the conversation

(and right now Heath Miller is hands down the Rookie of the Year)

and about Dallas

November 04, 2005 at 03:28PM View BBCode

The NFC is beginning to look like the AFC did the in 80s. Now, I don't think the AFC will ever win 13 in a row like the NFC did, but my top 5 teams in the NFL would all be AFC teams.
Dallas very well may end up representing the NFC in the Super Bowl, but that'd be kind of like when San Diego represented the AFC in the SB 29 (if you know what I mean).

Bledsoe has played well most of the time, although he's made a couple dreadful decisions late in games that really cost his team. But maybe he is comeback player of the year.

Right now I believe the Giants and the Panthers are the 2 best teams in the NFC ... with Dallas not far behind

Yeah Giants. The one thing I like about football is that you can turn a team completely around in one year. Big Ben isn't the MVP. I'm sorry but that goes to Peyton with out question especially over Big Ben.

That's what kruse said YK.

I don't think Ben is League MVP material. Team MVP though.

So we're handing him the MVP award based on name-recognition alone?

Manning has had a solid put unspectacular season this year and is in no way the slamdunk choice that he was in 2004. If you've got a boner for passing stats, why not give the midseason award to the guy who's putting up far better numbers: Carson Palmer.

The MVP belongs to the most flashy player on the team with the most wins.

That, this year atleast, would be Edgerrin James. Now, I don't think he deserves the MVP, but he has had a better year than Peyton and the Colts have the best record.

I think it either goes to Carson Palmer or Steve Smith.

If he and the Seahawks keep rolling (he will, they won't), Shaun Alexander deserves some consideration.
Benne

November 05, 2005 at 06:20PM View BBCode

If not MVP, Alexander certainly merits consideration as Offensive Player of Year. I mean, come on, he's on pace for 24 touchdowns, 1,500 yards, and Mike Holmgren seems to have finally found that when he gets the ball, the Seahawks win. He is what makes this offense go and when he's rolling, our pourous defense stays on the bench where they belong if we are going to make any noise in the NFC.

LT is another possible MVP candidate, the Chargers dug themselves in a hole early when they weren't giving him the ball...

Lawrence Taylor retired, and he played for the Giants, not the Chargers.
