Underrated

June 11, 2003 at 11:54PM View BBCode

I think Corey Paterson is the most underrated player in the game. His average is in the .300's and finally has made it so teams have more to deal with than just Sammy.

i agree ive seen him play a couple times and he looks like he is pretty good. hes got sum good contact, pretty good power and sum speed. i think that he isnt noticed as much becuz the whole cubs spotlite is on the pitching and sammy

Its a little early on to be patting him on the back no?

Granted he is having a good season hitting .322 with 12 HR's, this is the first season he has ever shown such potential. Last season was his first real full season and his debut was anything but special (.253 14 HR in 153 games).

This could be a fluke season for him, being a Mets fan I am all of a sudden reminded of Rico Brogna.

Not saying this guy won't turn out to be the next Griffey ... oh wait ... that would be bad ... :P Just saying its still early.

I dont know where he is in the lineup but is he riding Sammy's coattails?

I remember when Bobby Bo and Barry Bonds were in Pittsburgh. Everyone thought they were the two greatest hitters ... well, we all know Bonds turned out the way he did but ... once you seperated the two you found out what Bobby Bo was actually made of ... arrogance.

My point? I dont think I have one, just felt like talking baseball.:D

Patterson is good but he's not underrated. He was supposed to be the next coming of Ken Griffey Jr. and he hasn't quite gotten there yet. I actually like him a lot but there was so much hype around him that I would never call him underrated.

I went to the Red Sox vs Cardinals game last night and I've decided that the future best player in the game is Albert Pujols. That guy is AMAZING!!! He hit everything hard and looked awesome. He can also play a few positions. I was very impressed.

patterson is underatted. his first season in the bigs reminds me of sorianos first season in the majors (soriano put up alittle bettr average) but hitting mediocre with around 15 homers and 50-70 rbis. wut did soriano follow up with a 39 homer 100+ rbi .300+ season in his 2nd year and patterson has also shown that potential. well see

I don't think Patterson's done enough yet to be underrated -- up until this year he hasn't done much. His career OPS is only .719 -- that's less than Eduardo Perez. His first two seasons he had little more than a cup of coffee with the big squad. His first full season was mediocre. This year he is off to a great start and shows every sign of being a star. But it's only 60 games, so let's not jump the gun here. There's a lot of guys that have had a great 60 game stretch and didn't go on to be stars -- see: Spencer, Shane. However, his progression has been similar to Soriano's and he does have a lot of potential -- I think he'll be a very good player. But until he's done it for a couple of seasons, I don't think you can say he's underrated.

Thats pretty much how it goes ... you have to accomplish something of significance and go unnoticed in order to be 'under rated' ...

And ... considering the 'hype' he has recieved its obvious he isnt going unnoticed ...

"hype" i havent heard nething about him on channels like espn except the games he plays in and even then they dont talk about him all that much.

There was TONS of hype about Patterson before he hit the majors. He was the #3 overall pick in 1998 and has won minor league player of the year awards and high school player of the year awards. He was supposed to be awesome and actually hasn't lived up to expectations yet.

Id have to agree that he is not underated due to his lack of experience and because of the hype he got before he even made the major leagues. Now if he was hitting .410 with 30 homers and 80 rbis right now and nobody was talking about him then he would be underated.

it is almost impossible to hit .410 with 30 homers and 80 rbis at this point in the season

Well duh,of course it is but that is what kind of numbers he would need to have to be considered underated. You would have to be from another planet if you never heard all the talk AND hype of patterson when he was in high school and when he was drafted.

The amazing Kreskin says ... Players with funny names!

Heh ... I dont know, we will have to see how he does under pressure. Right now he is gliding through a season that means less then drop in the ocean ... I so wanted to think of something funny ... but ... ...

Anyway, when I see Seo pitch a complete game shut out in a playoff game THEN I will take a longer look ...

BTW ... I am a disgruntled Mets fan ... at least Reyes is doing ok ... no way of saying he is under rated though ... I mean ... comparing him to Soriano and A-Rod already? Geez ...

thank you anonymous for pointing out the obvious. anyway all the hype when he wuz in highschool and when he was drafted means absoultly nothing. he hadnt even played in a major league game or a minor league game for that matter. its like lebron james all the "experts" on espn and crap r all sayin that he could be bettr than jordan. yea rite. no1 will be bettr then jordan plus he is a 6'8" 240 18 year-old playin against some 5'10" scrub teenagers not seven foot nba super stars i admit lebron is good when i saw him play but u need to remember who he wuz playin against. I hope u got my point (I hope i got my point too) sorry for rambling

Are you kidding? Vidro's the bomb, and Cabrera's having his best season in ages.

And Wilkerson hit for the cycle - in order - the other day.

Expos are a little underated here and there, but never the whole lineup. You want underrated?Loaiza and Ryan Klesko.

underrated guys tend to be the good players on bad and/or unpopular teams or a good player on a good team but with a lot of more flashy players around them. ryan klesko, brad wilkerson, and also many of the white sox like carlos lee and jose valentin who are often left out cause frank thomas and magglio ordonez get all the attention, same with bret boone on the mariners cause ichiro gets so much attention.
