Can the Indians catch the White Sox?

September 15, 2005 at 08:17PM View BBCode

Just checked the score - Royals just scored in the bottom of the 7th to take a 3-2 lead. If the White Sox lose, the Indians will be just 4 1/2 back. They have 6 games left between them. The other games, the White Sox play Detroit and Minnesota while Cleveland plays Tampa Bay and Kansas City.

Can the tribe catch the white sox?

If my math is right, the White Sox were up 6 1/2 games going into September. How big of a lead did the Angels blow a few years back? I think they always measured that from Sept 1st.

The Indians have a very good chance at catching them, but in the end I think they'll fall short by a game or two and end up with the WildCard... This is coming from a biased White Sox fan though ;)

I'd say the Indians will win the division.

Nope, the Tribe won't catch them. I think the White Sox will be swept in the playoffs by whoever they play but I think they'll hold on.

The bigger question is, who will be the last team to get in? I have a feeling that it's coming down to that final series in Boston for the AL East. I think Cleveland gets the wild card no matter what and the Yanks and Sox battle it out for the AL East. I'm embarassed at how my be-loved Red Sox have been playing lately. Nobody is stepping up except Ortiz who is carrying this team on his back.

It'll still be enough to hold that 3-game lead they've somehow been able to maintain even if they slip a game or two during the course of the season. I knew that when the Sox got back on top of the division, they'd be there for good for the duration of the season. Yanks don't have the pitching they need to get through... Somehow, our comparative geriatric ward may need a couple of jolts from the pads to make it to the second round of the playoffs themselves.

Does Chicago end on the road? Do they play against the east, central, west?

They have the best road record, the best record against the east and the best central record of any A.L team.

Maybe if Chicago plays western teams at home to end the season Cleveland would have a shot . .

They play each other 6 times. The last 3 of the season are against the Tribe.

Other than those 6 games, The White Sox play Detroit and Minnesota while the Indians play KC and Tampa Bay.

How bad was that Angels collapse, does anyone remember? That's widely considered the worst in history.

Not really. The 1964 Phillies were up by 6 and a half with 12 games left, lost 10 straight, and finished a game behind the Cardinals. That's the king of collapses.

King of collapses? No.

How about the Dodgers blowing a 13 1/2 game lead to the Giants and than . . "The shot heard round the world"

1995
In first place by 11 games in August, the Angels lost key personnel in the final stretch and ended up in a tie with the Seattle Mariners for the A.L. West Division championship. Seattle, managed by Lou Pinella, and led by star pitcher Randy Johnson, won the division title (the Mariners' first American League west title) in a one game playoff, which the Mâ??s won 9-1.

That was 1995--the year of the Refuse to Lose Mariners. The biggest lead I see them having is 11 games, on August 2nd. I always remember the Orioles starting the slide, but they really didn't. Boston swept them in a three game series starting August 21st. Then they beat the Orioles once before losing the other three games in a four game set. They were then swept by New York and Boston to make it 9 game streak. A week later they went on another nine game losing streak, then rallied to hang onto a tie before being beat in the one game playoff. Anyone remember Luis Sojo's inside-the-park grand slam (or whatever the hell it was. Whisk?)

Anyway... I'd love to see the Indians win the Wild Card and keep the Yankees out of the playoffs, but now that the Yanks have learned how to beat the Devil Rays, I don't know if the Red Sox can hold them off from winning the east.

Awesome, let's see where the Sox/Indians were on August 2nd...

They had a 14 game lead on August 2nd.

It's interesting that the Mariners were in third place on August 2nd of 1995. The Angels had 13 game lead over the Mariners, but only an 11 game lead over Texas. The Angels went 22-34, which is bad, but the M's simply went nuts at 36-20.

Greatest. Year. Ever. And they did it without Griffey for much of the year with that broken wrist. An even sweeter moment than the division title was, of course, the ALCS. Down 2-0 in the series, they roar back to win the next two games in dramatic fashion, then in Game 5, of course, Edgar's double, scoring Griffey from first. Awesomeness.

It was actually a bases-loaded triple and an error to plate Sojo. That was in the tie-breaker.

Yeah, I know it wasn't a grand slam. I'm actually surprised they gave him a triple for it. I really jumped on the Mariners bandwagon that year and that was a very memorable moment.

Ahh yes 1995.

"everybody scores!" The giddy, confused call of an anouncer trying to explain an inside-the-park, grand slam, ground ball.

You like using simleys don't you.... Whatever, I think Cleveland has a very good shot at taking the division and if they don't they will probably take the wild card unless something really bad happens for them. The series between Boston and the Yanks may very well determine who wins the AL east. I am amazed that Cleveland is now a game in front of Boston and am very glad the Yankees have rallied back to a half game behind Boston. If the Yanks are tied or a game out coming into that series its whoever takes the series wins. If Boston is 2 or 3 up Yanks have to sweep, and if the Yanks are 1 2 or 3 games up Boston must sweep, even if we have a one game lead because we are 9 and 7 thus far against Boston. if they take 2 out of 3 we will be tied and our record being 10 and 9 will send us to the playoffs.

Thank you Joe Crede indeed. Not a big supporter of his, in fact I hope they start someone else at third next year, but he definitely pulled through big time tonight.

Now if only the Sox could get a little momentum going and maybe string together 3-4 wins... Tired of this win one, lose two crapola :(
