Trading Off Pitchers

July 29, 2005 at 02:45PM View BBCode

I am looking for some fresh blood to add to my pitching rotation. Mostly relievers, but could use a starter or two. All pitchers are on the trading block, and my Second basemen. Looking for youth and early picks for next year's draft.

I know advice wasnt asked for, but I'd like to say something here. You have some young guys that with proper development are going to be real monsters. If I were in your place I'd put cp's on Larry Russell, Jim Day, and George Clingdon.

Day is just amazing. In three years with 5cps each year he could easily be B velocity and A+ control. That would mean at age 20 he would be A- overall. Thats a super stud rp no matter how ya look at it.

Glingdon is 18. At that age he isnt going to convert many improvement chances in the majors. He'll get about 1 improvement for each 10 chances he gets. And since you have him in the bullpen hes not going to get a lot of inning/gp so he'll end up at the end of the year with one or two improvements. He really should be in the minors with cp on him.

Also you gotta get rid of your cf. B-/D+ vs righties is gonna kill you. If I were in your place I'd switch in either George Lee, Chuck Ochoa, or Johnny Lewis as your starting cf. Personally I'd leave Lee on the bench (a B/B vr guy to ph is a very very good thing). Of Lewis and Ochoa its kind of a tossup, but I'd put Ochoa in as starting cf because he's 25 in the offseason and has several more decent years of improvements left.

As far as getting new pitchers, I hate to say it, but this league has a real shortage of B- or better pitchers. I really dont think there are going to be many up for trade. You have 3 real studs at the top of your rotation, but I think your gonna have to go with some weaker guys at the bottom. Brillheart and Johnson look like the best options you have, even though they are gonna strugle for a bit till they develop some.

One last thing.. please get your minors down to 15 players. Each player in the minors has an "invisible" cp given to him. That is how players you dont put cp's on get improvement chances each game. ABE decides which player gets a chance by randomly picking from the 15cps you've assigned and the 1cp each player in the minors has. What this means is if you have more than 15 players in the minors you hurt the development of each guy you put cp's on. Rob Strickland, Les Bosser, Ed Scharbarth, Ernest Halter, Al Williams, and any pitcher over age 30 that is anything less than B- can be gotten rid of and not hurt you one bit.

Those are just my opinions, and your welcome to take them or leave them. I personally think those things would help you out though, so its something to keep in mind.

Would you like a bit of advice on your team? Keep in mind, this is all just my opinions, but I think what I say is in keeping well with the general consensus of knowledegable players that usually answer questions in the "questions" forum.

My first piece of advice for every team is if your not in contention for a playoff spot, your most likely better off not platooning someone. In the case of Detroit, your left and rightfielders both should not be platooning. The guys you have in vs righties are both in the prime improvement years and both pretty good to begin with. You'll be better off in the long run if you play them fulltime and let them get the maximum improvements for the year. I'd also make Willie Baker your fulltime shortstop. At 22 he's got a lot of years of developments left, and is pretty good already. Hi Morris wont get many more improvements, so he's already maxed out. Use him as a backup.

You might also consider sending Rafael Stevens down to the minors and bringing up Miguel Powers. Powers is a better player, and plays 3b. You need a good backup 3b since Aaron Couture has an F health and will miss about 1 in 5 games. If you have Powers in the majors your not going to have a bad player playing in place of Couture when he rests.

Personally I'd move Dusty Hands to the majors and Paul Bathe to the minors (with 5cp on him). The reason is that Bathe is younger, so will convert more ic's than would Hands. Also Hands is already B overall, which in this league is pretty good for an rp. Set up your bullpen so Hands, Doug Leroy, and Gabe Henery come in from the bullpen first. I'd personally have them come in in that order as well. The other two will not amount to much more than they are now, but those three have improvements left, so its good to get them as many g+ip as possible.

Dane Ferrer should be traded off (I hear the Mages could use an sp =)). Slayback should probably be traded as well. You have to ask yourself if you think you can win a playoff spot this year. If the answer is yes, then you should have your rotation in this order: Fry, Williams, Pape, Godwin, and Caliguiri. The reason is that those five are your 5 best starters, and the best ones are at the top of the rotation where they will get more g+ip. If you dont think you can win this year then I'd probably keep Caliguiri in the minors and put Lou Ross in the majors. Neither Ross or Caliguiri will get a lot of improvements in the majors, but will get a few. It is nearly impossible in SimDynasty to ever win if you have cp's on more than 3 players at a time. If your not competing to win this year, then put the cp's on the guys that will improve the most. In your case Caliguiri, Andy Penn, and Paul Bathe should have 5cps each.

Ferrer, Slayback, and Dan Preston all have trade value at this early date in the league. I would not be suprised to see you getting a 2nd rounder for each of the starters and a 3rd for the rp if not more. I also would not be suprised to see you get a 1st rounder for all three of them. Make some offers to other teams and see what you can get.

As said before, this is just my set of opinions, and your welcome to ignore them all, but I think these things would help you out in the long run.

Best of luck this year and all the rest,
Adam

Thanx for all the help. So much of that I really didn't know how it works, so that helped me make sense of some stuff. This year I already feel at a bit of a loss...so sending some prospects down to the minors might help with my future years. Thank you once again.

I'm glad I could help. I'm allways willing to answer questions anyone has. As I've said before, I'd rather loose to someone just as good at the game as I am than to win by beating someone who dosnt know how the game works.
