49ers and nfl draft

well looking at this

http://www.sportsline.com/nfl/draft/drafttracker

i guess it is no suprise to see the qb go number 1. i dont know if i would have done it being they will suck for a while and next season there will be a nice qb coming in i forgot his name he teared up the college league this season i think they should have taken a running back. next year there wont be much running backs in the drafts so now they got to get a weaker one then. but seeing 3 runningbacks go in the top 5 picks shows something. maybe smith can do good and fool me and be a good pick. but i still think they should have goot the rb.

what you guys think?

Yeah, well they do have a lot of needs but you can't start thinking about next year's draft before this year's draft is finished. They will probably end up with a top 5 pick again next year but Leinart (that QB that you were talking about) will go #1 and there is no guarantee that they will have the #1 pick again last year.

Alex Smith is the best QB in the draft and there is not a lot of depth at that position. The desperately need a QB because neither Tim Rattay or Ken Dorsey are gonna get the job done. And Smith is no scrub either, he could become a great QB as well. And waiting on Leinart next year is also a dumb move because there is always the possibility that he gets hurt next year in college and then what? Plus there have been plenty of highly rated QB's coming out of college who have flopped (Ryan Leaf, Akili Smith, and Tim Couch just to name a few).

Also, runningback is one of, if not the deepest positions in the draft. Sure Ronnie Brown, Cedric Benson, and Cadillac Williams are the glamour guys in the draft but there were a lot of talented running backs available in the second and third rounds. J.J. Arrington of Cal lead the nation in rushing last year with over 2,000 yards and he went in the second or third round. Ryan Moats from LA Tech was a great pick for Philly in the third round. The 9ers took RB Frank Gore from Miami in the third round. Gore averaged 9.1 ypc in his freshman year (2001). Two serious knee injuries dropped him from a potential top ten pick to the third round. If he recovers from those injuries he could be a great back. Just look at what Willis McGahee has done coming out of the same school and off a similar injury. And the NFL is full of quality runningbacks. Some teams have two or more RB's that are capable of starting. Look at the Steelers with Duce and the Bus, Philly has Westbrook, Buckhalter, and now Moats, Carolina has Stephen Davis and Deshaun Foster, Atlanta has Warrick Dunn and T.J. Duckett, St. Louis has Marshall Faulk and Steven Jackson, Buffalo has McGahee and Henry.

I think the 49ers had a very good draft. They got some great starting blocks to rejuvenate that franchise. Now they can look to the defense on the 2nd day.

Well, obviously they weren't going to go from worst to first after one draft. That team was left in ruins so it will take time to rebuild but I agree with what Tim said. They have some good starting points to build on now.

I think I'm overwhelmed by the urge to strangle every last educator you've had.

Definitely not there yet, but this is a good starting point. Smith is giong to be a very good QB and Baas will be a good addition to their Oline. I like Gore and think he will look more like his freshman self.
