Can the D-Rays ever do something smart without doing something stupid?

Thursday
Smart: D-Rays claim Michael Restovich off waivers, to give them a power hitting RF who is better than Alex Sanchez
Stupid: D-Rays trade a young reliever to Leo Mazzone for a UT guy whose only advantage over Shane Halter is youth (26 vs 34). And if they wanted to be really smart, they could make Upton a starter, and then have a perfect UT in Alex Gonzalez
Friday
Smart: They sign Carl Crawford to a 6-year, $31 million contract (the last 2 years being option years)
Stupid: They waive Restovich because he can't play CF. There's roughly a 0% chance he makes it through waivers

The main problem with the Devil Rays is they exhaust their youngsters' cheap years in the majors while they're too young. BP likes to say "Player X will be a very good player in the future but not for the Devil Rays"

Perhaps they're banking that one day the absolutely brilliant moves they make (like signing Crawford long-term) will outweigh the goofs.

Carl Crawford? Really? Man, your threshold for "brilliant move" is pretty damn low.

still a very good player, but I would hardly call ANY re-signing a "brilliant move." Was that sarcasm?

Hell, I'd put my money on Carl Crawford.
And I was speaking on Devil Ray standards, Furious. Right now, based on their options, you'd have to think that it is probably in their best interests to find someone on their team to build around. And someone with outside potential to be the next Rickey isn't so bad.
So rears the ugly head of my leadoff hitter fetish.
And yes, Crawford is better than Baldelli.

Setting aside the notion of how good Carl Crawford is or potentially could be, all the Devil Rays have done is buy three of Crawford's free agent years. For the next three years they will pay him more than they potentially had to, and then for the three after that (assuming they pick up the two option years) they'll be paying him a whole lot of money. Then he'll be 28, quite possibly coming into his prime, and a free agent who they'll have to pay fair market value for or lose.
This is why it's usually incredibly unwise to bring a player up when he's 20 unless you think you'll be competitive over the course of the next 6 years. You're stuck with either losing a prime player at the peak of his abilities or being forced to pay him full market value for his peak (think Alex Rodriguez). Better to bring a prospect up when they're 23 or 24, so that by the time their free agent period kicks in they're already pushing 30 and you already got to enjoy their 25-28 peak at a reasonable price. The Devil Rays either haven't figured out this concept or (more likely) are so desperate for fans and attention that they will bring up any prospect who shows some potential.

I seemed to have forgotten that baseball is a business now... My bad.

They play in the AL East and are not Boston or New York. Who cares what they do?
