Getting there on the Amateur Draft

March 10, 2002 at 07:13AM View BBCode

Made some big progress today. I even ran a few drafts and I was happy with the results.

Typically, the first 3-4 players selected were quality players (B- or better) that could make an impact at the major league level the following season. The rest of the players were in the C+ to D+ range.

A few things left to do before we can really test this. I've modified the Promote/Demote logic so that you can promote players without demoting. This is necessary because of retirements. I actually already put this change onto the beta site. Hopefully, you won't notice it. But if something bad happens when your trying to Promote/Demote let me know.

I need to work out the Waiver Wire screen so you can waive players without picking someone up. Shouldn't be too much work.

The last piece is finding a way to display the Draft Preferences page with the current Draft Center.

I'm speeding up the league further, to 18 games per day (6 at a time!). I'd rather do this than do them all at one time. So the season should be over sometime this week.

Can you give a little info on how 'youth' will work within the amateur draft? What are the age ranges of guys within the draft? 17 to 22 or so, mimicking H.S. to college-age players?

Just wondering what weight I should put into 'youth' on the draft page...

Ages range from 17 to 24, but very few players are 23 or 24. Most players are either 18 or 22. But there are a decent number of 19, 20, 21, and 23 year olds.

Can we assume that ability ratings are independent of age, i.e. the 18 year olds are just as good as the 22 year olds on average?

If so, this would then translate that 18 year olds are better prospects, as they will have more time to improve before they hit their peak.

Perhaps the younger players should be slightly less polished than the older players on average, to match the growth that many players gain from playing in college.

In reality, players out of high school are usually more raw, but potentially have a higher ceiling of ability, while college players are more polished, but maybe less room to grow.

I'm just curious - trying to work out what the pros and cons of the 'youth' field in the amateur draft page will be.
