Mentoring Changes

November 17, 2004 at 06:10AM View BBCode

We ran the first 12 games in the LT league, and the first 3 in the ST league and ran into a few issues with mentoring.

Please ignore your grades for these games. They were wrong in some cases.

I have also updated some of the logic behind this. Seems to me anyhow that teams were lower than I expected them to be. I'll continue to monitor and make tweaks to the equations - I'll let you know each time I do make any changes.

Finally, I may have mispoked somewhere when I said a B- was average for mentoring. C+ is actually average.

I just looked at the waiver wire and with the advent of the mentoring system their are now no players either among the hitters or pitchers that are over 30. In fact there is just one who is 30. Owners are inclined to keep their olders players at least until the +'s are understood.

I have made another change to the underlying formulas. I didn't touch batters, but increased the effect each mentoring Pitcher had on his team. I'm running some games now and will look at the results shortly.

Good. My 3 30 yr old SP's should be contributing better than a C to my two 26 yr old SP's.

Okay, I'm fairly happy where things stand right now. Batters might be a tad on the high side, but I'm going to leave it alone for the moment.

I'm still seeing fluctuations in my pitching mentor grades from game to game. Are there other factors that would tweak these up or down (like winning the game, maybe?).

Yes, this looks more appropriate for pitchers. Batters might be slightly high, but nothing major. With my lineup I feel like I should be getting C/C+, not B-/B. As for my SP/RP, I think the new adjustment is closer to how I perceived it to be, I think?

However, My youngest SP is 27 and the rest are 29, 31, 31, 34 and the highest I can get is B-. If you have one SP around 24/25, you'll need the other 4 to be at least 33 to maximize his improvements. Realistic? Same goes for RP.

Fluctuations should only be based of whether you won or lost the game. hcboomer - can you specify which games you see the fluctuations for and I'll have a look? Going to look at my games as well.

Tom - the 29 year old won't do you any good. The 31 year olds won't be great mentors yet. I think your team is about where it should be - average basically. When those guys are 30, 32, 32, and 35 - you'll probably be up near an A-.

ok perfect, that's what I wanted to know. Now onto finding some loopholes...

This for the Baltimore Beaneaters in the LT league.

fluctuations appear to primarily be occurring from series to series. Looking back through three series, in one set -- Game 16-18, all against the same team, obviously), the mentor grades were D for SP, C- for RP. The next series, they were at D+/C-. Then the final series of the three -- Games 22-24), they were up to C-/C+ in the first game, then C/C+ in the next two.

Regarding that change within the last series, I'm assuming that was related to losing the first game, and winning the other two. But why such shifts from series to series?

Another note -- I thought perhaps a birthday from one of the mentors might have made a difference. And, in fact, a 30-year-old starter did turn 31 on April 19. But that coincided with Game 2 of the first series I mentioned (Game 17 overall). That tweak up to D+ for starters in the second series -- which I guess might have been attributable to that birthday -- didn't occur until two games after the guy turned 31.

I've been making changes in between most of the series - hence the fluctuations. All in all, I think I have made at least 3 changes - each time I posted in this thread.

But keep a close eye going forward - and let me know what you see. Thanks!
