Dummy Screens For Game Control
March 12, 2003 at 03:57AM View BBCode
I've taken a first stab at creating screens for Game Control. They don't do anything, but you can get the idea of what I mean by game control by looking at them.
I've created the screens that dictate how pitchers are used. Comments and suggestions are especially appreciated in this early stage before any code is built. I'm sure we won't be able to agree on anything, but I'll take your comments into consideration as always.

And here is one specific to Bullpen Roles:

I'll be doing other screens for pinch hitting, baserunning, and defensive replacements.
Try to think about real life situations (or ones that people have been complaining about).
Would you be able to set the preferences in a way to prevent these things? Pop quiz: how would you use the settings to prevent your starter from being pulled in a no hitter no matter what?

might be a bit much though

could be intimidating for a new user...is there an option to simply let ABE still handle things?

I don't see a way of preventing being pulled in a no hitter.

circumstances

should include the score of the game as well as what the pitcher has done so far. My SP might have given up 5 runs in 4 IP but the score is 12-4...in that case of course I'd want to leave him in to get the win. I think the simpler the better with something like this, otherwise you'll end up with a pull down for every possible situation and it'll be too confusing for most people.

Let me do some more thinking. The problem with simplier is that it won't be able to handle every circumstance.
The first time you came to these pages, it would be loaded with Abe's settings (or a close approximation of what it is today)

it's good that it would have defaults, and also should have a 'reset defaults' key as well.

Instead of having everything so cut and dried, what about, for example, having the first set of options for pitchers just be a slider, one for starters and one for relievers, with a rating for how quick of a "hook" you want, and let ABE translate that into precise numbers.
When it comes to offense, for example, rather than see "Attempt steal when speed rating is at least C or there are 2 outs and thirsd is open" or something like that, just have a setting for "Baserunning agressiveness" and "Steal agresssivness". Of course, you could allow these to be set differently for fast and slow runners, and allow the owner to decide where the breakpoint is between fast and slow runners, etc.

To help the "new user", I would suggest creating a few basic profiles that would preset all of these settings. For example:
1) Default - the default ABE settings
2) Aggressive
3) Conservative
4) Custom - owner sets each setting
Obviously we would need to define what "Agressive" and "Conservative" actually mean...

Good point Chris. One way to do this would be to put 4-5 links at the top of the page that had different managerial styles.
Maybe I'll build two screens, one for simple and one for advanced.

I just got a chance to look at them....
And the are AWESOME!!! I'm practically drooling waiting for the time when they become functional.
But I definitely agree, there should be a "default" and "reset default" option, as well as something like disciple's idea of Agressive, Consercative, Default. What I would do with thatthough, is when one of these "profiles" is selected, I would allow the owner to go in and tinker a bit with the exact preferences.
Also, there should probably be specific options like "never pull a pitcher pitching a no hitter", or only "never pull a pitcher pitching a perfect game, but do pull if its a no hitter and close." Maybe even let owners choose whether the pitcher is pulled for a pinch hitter, and for another pitcher. (Though you may already have that in the works.)

I updated the Bullpen page to include a choice for Rotation management and skipping starters.
I'm still noodling over your comments otherwise.

simple vs complicated

baserunning is something that could be looked at as well, either a player by player thing or just going by speed rating. Something like (speed A and over=green light/yellow light/red light) and on down the line of speeds. Better than a single slider for the whole team, you might have one player who would be a green light and everyone else would be a red light.
I think ABE does a good job in general on most things, I like the idea of defining which pitcher would come in when though as sometimes he brings in a weird choice. Baserunning is important, also being able to pick a player to start for someone if they were out of the lineup would be nice. Say a pull down menu next to the players spot in the lineup, and a list of players to select the replacement from if he was out. Sometimes I might not want to use the obvious choice.

I totally agree with your idea about having a green light/yellow light/red light system that you can choose the player's speed for.
Another idea (though I'm sure that your head must be swimming in them by now Tyson) is to have a Bench1, Bench2, Bench3, etc... position to allow owners to determine the order in which they would like players to come in. Say for example I have a 9th guy that I want to get as many ABs as possible for; I would always want him to be the first pinch hitter, and then bring in a substitute position player if he isn't "good enough" to play that position.

The Bench1, Bench2, etc. idea would take a lot of rewritting of code I think. Maybe I'll address that one after this.
Yes, I'll be doing screens for baserunning and pinch hitters when I get a chance. Probably after we nail down the pitcher stuff.

I think you are off to a good start with the pitching management, particularly the bullpen. Both are very literal, but in the case of bullpen management, this isn't necessarily a bad thing (kind of like hitting on 16 and staying on 17). It may make sense to have more general guidelines for the pitchers: this guys has a long leash, and this guy gets a quick hook. Sort of like where its going with the "depends on the circumstance" setting in stamina.
In the bullpen management, I assume that if you change the values for runs ahead on behind in the two topmost fields, the values are changed to reflect this in the next two tables?

I think I just thought of a large flaw
March 13, 2003 at 08:50PM View BBCode
In this scenario, what happens to your starting pitcher with these controls?
Bottom seven, trailing 2-0. Bases loaded, two out, pitcher due up.
Pitcher's stamina is fine, and he hasn't fulfilled the ER or WHIP requirements to be removed from the game. What will Abe do? I know what he
should do...

It wouldn't take the offensive situation into account.
How about another option:
Pinch hit for the pitcher in the X inning or later when the tying or go ahead run is:
Choices:
Never
On Deck
At The Plate
On Base
In Scoring Position
Plus you could decide on X for X inning.

I've updated both of these screens based on your comments. Check them out.
BTW, if you want to leave your pitcher in for no hitter chances here's how you would do it:
"Choose Only in certain circumstances" for the two SP drop downs for Pitcher Stamina, and then put at least 1 hit in for one of the certain cirumstances.
BTW2, I would love your comments on the wording of this page. Any suggestions on how to change the language at all?

no-hitters

I'd rather see a seperate no-hitter section if anything...otherwise it would seem that other games could be affected.

For the angle you've chosen, I think its perfect. But I do wonder if its the right angle.
The bullpen management makes perfect sense, since the bullpen pitchers are given roles, thus they are treated differently. But the starters are all treated as though they were the same. I can see how I would want to change those values depending on who was starting the next game...but I can't see changing all those values for every game.
Wouldn't it be simpler, and more intuitive, just to have a "hook" level? Let my Ace try and work out of jams, because I don't have anyone in the bullpen I would rather pitch...but yank my fifth starter at the first hint of trouble. This "hook level" can have values that match exactly what would be put into the fields...for instance, a slow hook might be 5 runs and 10 baserunners through 5 innings, while a quick hook might be 3 runs and 8 baserunners. But then, rather than adjusting the values for each game, you can just adjust the hook level of your pitcher.
I suppose this is another level of programming, since Abe will now have to keep track of WHO is pitching, and then identifying how to manage that particular player, so it may not be realistic. But it would be a lot easier to manage.
