Alright gentlemen!
We had a couple of recently retired players just barely miss the ballot this time around, so I thought it might be a good time to review our HOF ballot criteria for those who are new or would like a refresher.
For Hitters (any 2 of these):
2500 Hits
400 HR
800 extra base hits
1500 RBI
.270 batting average
For pitchers (any 2 of these):
200 Wins or 400 Saves
3.50 ERA or less
1.30 WHIP
2500 K
So honorable mention goes to Montreal's Jim Weaver and Vance Fernandez of Cleveland. If it were the Hall of Really Really Good, these guys would definitely be on the ballot. On to our current candidates:
3rd Ballot:
Sweet Sassy Mo Lassy - The journeyman and defensive gem of an outfielder enjoyed modest success the first 10 seasons of his career in Boston, but all of that changed when at the beginning of the 2017 season, lassy was traded to the Milwaukee Six-Pack where he would immediately win 3 consecutive NL MVP awards. During his 2nd MVP season in 2018, the 8 time All Star would lead the league in an extraordinary combination of categories: HR (38), RBI (138), and SB (42). However, the 6 time Golden Glove winner would go on to win his third consecutive MVP in 2019 with an all league leading slash line of .358/.426/.653 and lead the Six Pack to their first World Series Championship in 38 seasons. The slugger would next get traded to the Cleveland Seawolves and participate in playoff runs in 2020 and 2022.
2nd Ballot:
Albert King ? King played for Cincinnati, Milwaukee and Brooklyn and helped each team win a World Series. He played in 7 WS and made the playoffs a total of 11 times. His .302 career batting average ranks tied for 15th all time. He?s also tied for 22nd in OBP (.373) and 29th in OPS (.857).
Teddy O?Neill ? O?Neill was the Shamrocks closer for most of his career. He compiled 456 saves, 16th on the all time list. He finished with a 3.12 ERA and was Fireman of the year twice and an All Star 8 times. He was in the post season 11 times and sports 5 rings out of the 9 times in the Fall Classic.
Vince Meeker - Meeker won the Cy Young 3 times and his 3.18 career ERA ranks 29th all time. His WHIP almost as impressive (1.17) is tied for 31st all time. His whole career was in the Big Apple. He was in 3 LCS and has one ring from his only WS appearance. Meeker won the Cy Young 3 times and his 3.18 career ERA ranks 29th all time. His WHIP almost as impressive (1.17) is tied for 31st all time. His whole career was in the Big Apple. He was in 3 LCS and has one ring from his only WS appearance.
First time ballot:
Merwin Tolman - drafted with the 7th pick of the 2007 draft, the six time all star Tolman played the majority of his career in Anaheim with a stint in Brooklyn his last few seasons. Tolman played in 3 LCS and his career total of 285 saves ranks 42nd all time. The ever dependable Tolman never missed time due to injury in his entire career, and was a sage mentor to the younger players who were privileged to play with the journeyman.
As dough recently pointed out, we strive for 100% participation in our league HOF voting, so please take the time to cast your ballot below before season's end. Even if you don't think any of these players are worthy, go ahead and let us know below so that your voice is heard and your abstention tabulated correctly. If you would rather vote by secret ballot, you may do so by sending a u2u to either myself or dough.
Thanks guys,
Tim
