Who does ABE force into catching (if you don't have one)?

The league's catchers suck for the most part. Aside from a coveted few, they're either ancient, or they're just a sad group of 8 or so in the draft(s). I've never seen it this bad in a Dynasty league.

My starting catcher hits declines in the OS, and my backup is waiver wire crap who I'm about to punt. If I haven't found a replacement by the time my main C's retired or impotent, I'll simply live with none.

So who does ABE choose in these situations?

IF I remember this correctly ATM you would have Taylor picked against Lefties and Travis Smith against Righties. It goes by the next available player going 1b 2b 3b SS etc. until it finds one. Unless your league has Catcher must be X% to start there.

ABE just chooses the first guy on the depth chart who's not in the lineup. that looks to be smith vs rhp and taylor vs lhp, as Michael has said.

Great! Thank you, Michael.

That being said, you have to have 2 catchers on the roster if you want to be able to set a lineup, rotation, etc., if I am not mistaken

In my humble opinion, I could consider living with Crowell as an everyday starter until he retires. Even with C health, he's been able to start 130 games/year. I could maybe live without a valid backup, i.e. dropping Essegian. Like MDorf says though, without an eligible 2nd catcher on your Major League roster, you will be unable to adjust both your lineups and pitching. And believe me, that replacement catcher playing out of position will be something awful defensively. I'm talking a lot of errors on throws trying to catch basestealers, in addition to allowing a ton of stolen bases and passed balls. In addition, it has always been put forth by the SimD Admins that the catcher position has a legitimate effect on the pitching staff. It has been said that Range value is one of the most important factors. If the Admin is honest, playing out of position effectively lowers the defensive grades considerably. This is why a player without 100% conversion to the Catcher position who has an A+ grade for arm does not perform anywhere near that of a 100% converted catcher with an A grade for arm. I would only have to believe that would make the perceived range grade to be near F after the deduction coming from penalty.

If Essegian really is the best readily available alternative on the waiver wire, that does certainly seem problematic. He will allow >80% Stolen Base/Caught Stolen Base. Of course any player playing out of position will be even worse. My suggestion would be to find something that would be a better alternative as backup. B+ or above Arm would be the first thing I would want. Since Essegian is going to be terrible offensively, you may as well try to find another bad hitter that would at least perform well defensively. In my mind, not having an above average backup catcher is not a priority. While they are required to typically pick up the most starts while the starter rests since Catchers' health decreases faster than any other position, they also would not ever likely pinch hit or have to play backup at other positions. Therefore, value added/subtracted due to backup catching would typically be negligible. However, I wouldn't want the essential blackhole on run prevention that would exist in a player forced to play out of position. Add in the inconvenience of having to add another catcher any time you wanted to make lineup/pitching changes, and it just seems more like a bad idea.

I hadn't even considered mentoring or that awful out-of-position range/arm would be THAT diminished. Thanks for your insights, everyone.
