Byron Kiner?!

August 31, 2017 at 01:22AM View BBCode

Uh, has anyone (besides Rollman) seen the season Byron Kiner is having?! Through September 4th with 24 games to go in the regular season, his line is:

.407 AVG, .482 OBP, .672 SLG, 1.154 OPS, 29 HR, 129 RBI, 82 BB, 222 H.

Kiner is a 4-time MVP, 6-time WSC, and AS in 7 consecutive of his 8 prior seasons with the 1 non-AS year being when he was ROY. He goes a long way toward explaining Brooklyn's amazing success over the past several years and is well on his way to a historic season...

and a second round pick! Ok fine, top of the second but still....he has been a nice performer for sure.

In noticed that he was picked 17th overall. Do you remember what his skill levels were when you drafted him?

One thing I'm having a little bit of a hard time figuring out being relatively new to SimDynasty is any possible variance in improvement trajectories. My understanding is that our league settings only have one improvement arc for all players (i.e., no variable improvement per se, which some leagues have with different arcs) and that any difference in improvement is just attributable to randomness of getting/converting improvement chances (which factors in age and skill level with it being harder to improve once you are already good or once you are old).

Did Kiner exceed statistically likely improvement based on age and skill level when drafted?

I don't think so. He was a considerable project. I believe he was 17 with mid C's across most categories. Looking back at this improvements I do believe he outperformed, particularly in his later minor league years.

Insane year; maybe the best season of a 2nd rd draft pick ever?

Well, he's at .403 through play today with 15 games remaining. We are officially on .400 watch. It's never been done in Cesar Cedeno with the current record .392 by Atlanta's HOFer Igi Loyola in 1951.
