Hall of Fame Process

August 04, 2017 at 03:14PM View BBCode

So with some feedback from you I have put together I format for the Hall going forward.

1. Two owners will help facilitate the hall and make any final decisions. That will be Kingturtle and myself.

2. We will run nominations every other year.

3. We will allow each owner to nominate a maximum of two players each year. You can nominate from any player that is retired.

4. A maximum of 10 players will be voted on each year. If we have more than 10 nominated then Kingturtle and myself will determine who is up for vote based on the players stats. As a side note it will be very rare that we should have more than 10 nominees especially after we do this a few times.

5. We have 24 teams in this league and voting will commence for 10 days in real time. A minimum of 9 owners must vote on the Hall or we will keep voting open until we get there. I don't think this is going to be an issue with this many owners in the league.

6. A player must get 75% of the vote to be voted in.

7. A player can only go up for the Hall of Fame 5 times. If after 5 times of not getting in then that player will be eliminated from future ballots for life.

8. There are no minimum requirements other than the player has to be retired to be nominated.

9. Any suspicions on performing enhancing drugs can knock you out of the Hall of Fame.

This seems fair. Thanks to Pecker and Kingturtle for their work so far and their continued efforts.
Is there no minimum requirement to stay on the ballot? If players remain for 5 years no matter what, wouldn't that take up one of the 10 spots from a new, possibly more deserving, nominee?
Are we doing every other year nominations even for the first couple of seasons?

Yes every other year and remember if there are more than 10 nominees then the weaker of the nominees will fall off. If they are a weaker candidate and have been on there before then the newer and stronger candidate will replace them. If we limit it to 10 or less then owners can really study who deserves it. Having more than that makes it real tough to look through all of the candidates and could be really time consuming.

Hmmm. But then it's not really a 5 year limit. I think it makes more sense that once you are up for vote, you can't drop off in favor of a "stronger" candidate, unless you get less than X % of the vote/hit five years without being inducted.

It's 5 times. You can be up for vote 5 total times. They don't have to be consecutive years.

Ohhh, ok. Interesting method.
Ballots with time and % limits often see an increase in positive votes for a candidate as he gets closer to being bumped off. This would remove that.
Let's hope it works. Thanks.

I'd like to suggest a few tweaks...

Instead of each owner getting two nominations, give each owner just one per new ballot. And instead of limiting ballots to 10 players, have no limit. But then, players who don't receive 15% of the total vote get axed from all future ballots.

All great ideas. Let's see how this works and we will make adjustments if needed after a couple of rounds of this. The reason why I don't like the 15% rule is because if we have a very strong class of candidates then the bottom of those top players may not get to 15% since they are will judged based on that class. It's not right, but it's human nature. If we have more than 10 really strong candidates then we can always go higher if we need. After all nothing is ever set in stone.

Since every league does it different.... Let's roll with this and see what happens.

Well, we can make it 10% then. The owner is likely to vote for the player he or she nominated. So that's 1 in 10. If it winds up being 1 vote out of 11, then the guy is out. Such a circumstance would mean that 10 other owners voted no, and not a single owner other than the nominator voted yes. That's pretty resounding.

In the two other leagues I did this in, the mark was 12.5% (1 in 8). Not once did a decent Hall of Fame prospect get axed out. But 10% will work for our purposes. It just helps weed out the low hanging fruit.

Let's put it this way. At 10%, all a player needs is the nominating owner to vote yes if there are 10 or less owners voting. All a player needs is the nominating owner and you to vote yes if there are 11 to 20 owners voting. If a player only gets 2 votes and there are more than 20 owners voting, well I think that player isn't worthy of another chance.

Since you are really selling this pretty hard then it's not going to hurt to implement that. We will roll with the 10% rule.

Thanks. I assure you, it will be helpful :)

So when do we start?

We start at the beginning of next season.

It would be nice to start the call for nominations the day after the end of the World Series. That time of "year" can get a little boring.

I like the tweak. I agree with Turtle. OS takes a couple of days anyway.
