GM Bobby Layne has added a new Asst GM Ken Stabler to assist in his oversight of the roster and as a middle man with Lead Scout Dan Pastorini and Minor League Coordinator "Shipwreck" Kelly.
The organization was very happy with their playoff appearance but disappointed in the fact that they failed to reach the World Series. The goal is once again to make the playoffs, but ownership is also aware that the next few seasons are a transition period as the roster begins to be turned over to a younger group of players. Ownership has given Layne and manager Clyde Turner the ability to make decisions about playing time that will balance winning now with developing youth.
Pitching Staff
Rockne returns as the ace of the squad.
"Ace" Parker becomes the new number and looks to be a future stud.
Tiger Hill has made the full time move to starter.
Gearhart will continue to develop while being the fourth starter.
After a solid season as a starter, Frank Sinkwich moves into the closers role.
Newly Acquired RP Gordie Lee will take over as the setup man.
Veterans Lujack, Wertz, Heston, Moses, and Nelson will round out the rotation.
Hitters
The IF will look slightly different this year with Feathers moving to 1B to accomodate Stagg coming up to play 2B. Hein and Lassman will man 3b and SS again this year and for many more seasons. Stone will be the top backup with Jessee also getting atbats especially against lefties. Hollenbeck and Green will be the 2 catchers again this season. The OF has alot of talent with Bent making a move from 1st to LF. Art Groskloss, who at age 35 won the NL MVP and his 7th major league BA title, and 10th NL BA title. Muller will once again man CF. Brickley and Hanson will get plenty of playing time with Schultz starting against lefties.
Minor League System
Prospect rankings vary based upon the service you read, but according to MLBScout.com here is Brooklyn's rankings 1-10 with their team ranking being number #1 on the site.
1. Don Hutson- the recent drafts highest Brooklyn pick from Grundy, VA., who will play either 1B or OF and hit in the middle of the lineup in his prime. ML Cord. Kelly has called him "Groskloss JR".
2. Ernie Nevers- last seasons #1 overall pick from Seattle , WA who was a high school catcher but may be used in RF to have his bat in the middle of Brooklyns lineup more often.
3. Tom Harmon- a former top 5 pick who will come to the bigs either late this season or next as the 4th SP.
4. Ken Strong- a high school SP from West Salem, OH who has a high power arm, but needs work on his control.
5. Ed Weir- who was added a few seasons ago through a trade with San Fran, and is being converted to C. His future looks very bright.
6. George Savitsky- who looks to shortly fill an important role in the bullpen and possibly the future closer in Brooklyn.
7. Bob Higgins- a young OF drafted this past draft out of Corpus Christi, TX who looks to be a solid prospect but has a bit of an injury history that could hinder his ability to be a full-time starter.
8. Andy Bershak- a future RP piece.
9. George Sauer- a low power, high contact OF option.
10. Bob Wilson Jr.-a 2nd year Bulldog minor leaguer drafter last year out of a high school in Schaumburg, IL where is the all time leading IL high school home run hitter, but he needs to work on his very low contact rate. His cannon of an arm has lead Brooklyn to attempt to move him to C as a future backup.
As the beat writer I look around at teams in the league and see alot of teams with bright futures. It should be a fun season this season and for many to come. Go Bulldogs.
