Pirates 7 Los Angeles 5

Pittsburgh's high powered offense has been the major catalyst in the Pirates rousing start that has propelled the Bucs to a 12-4 record and a three game lead in the National League over a Houston team that has been drastically revamping its roster following the sale of the team.

The player at the center of everything in Pittsburgh has been third baseman Nelson Davis who is leading the league with six homeruns, is tops in runs batted in with eighteen and has a Ty Cobbian like .418 batting average.

As a team the Buccos team batting average of .289, 20 homeruns, 101 runs scored, and 172 hits all are tops in the league.

Pittsburgh's four game winning streak was broken in the finale of their series with Colorado but they rebounded with a statement 7-5 win over victory over San Francisco Giants.

Pittsburgh jumped all over San Francisco starting pitcher Scott Shipley (LP 1-2) for five runs on four hits in just 1.2 innings. Shipley gave up three runs in the first inning when Bob Jeffcoat hit a three run homerun, his fourth of the season.

Happy Ponson and Rich Henshaw both had RBI singles in the second inning to build the lead to 5-0.

Ken Coveleski had a RBI double in the bottom of the 4th to put the Giants on the board 5-1.

In the bottom of the 4th Pittsburgh adeptly manufactured a run. Bernardo Thorpe doubled with no one out. Relief pitcher Bobby Pierzynski bunted him to third Thorpe scored on a sacrifice fly by Steve Masaoka.

San Francisco staged a comeback in the bottom of the sixth. Biff Wiltze singled and Jim Narleski tripled. Narleski then scored on a infield out by Coveleski to cut the lead to 6-3.

Pittsburgh added a run in the bottom of the seventh when Giants pitcher Mark McDaniel walked the first batter he faced (Rich Henshaw) and John Torkelson singled him in off Chet Dihigo who replace McDaniel.

7-3 Pittsburgh.

Ken Covelesk hit a two run homerun for San Francisco in the eight but Pittsburgh held on for a 7-5 win.

Jack Bosch picked up his 6th save.

Astros 4 New York 1

Starting pitchers Hank Lonnett and Jerry Bailey both pitched well through the early innings although Bailey gave up seven hits and benefitted from some good defensive support behind him. Bailey allowed three hits in the second inning. Bart hiller doubled but was caught attempting to steal third base by catcher Jeff Koler.

Bruce Baker singled but was thrown out at third base by center fielder Steve Whaling who fielded Matt Sullivan's singled to right center field and made a strong accurate throw to Randy Good at third for the ending inning out.

Tim Bannister made a diving stop and threw out Andrew Glauber to snuff out a potential rally one inning later.

Bailey gave up a run in the seventh after Baker picked up new York's seventh hit of Bailey.

Dick Jestadt took over and got the first batter he faced out before allowing the runner to score on a two out double by Glauber.

Jestadt struck out pinch hitter Damon Haught to end the inning.

Lonnett allowed only two base runners in the early innings. Silver Robinson walked in the second and singled in the forth.

In the fifth newly acquired Jake Powell made his first contribution, a solo homerun off Lonnett that put Houston in front 1-0.

Steve Whaling (offered in three trades but no takers) homered in the 6th.

2-0 Houston.

In the seventh five consecutive batters reached base. Pinch hitter Roy McNichol singled but was caught stealing (2-4).

Pinch hitter Ken Smith walked, stole second, but got a little too far off second and was picked off pitcher George Loiselle to second baseman Matt Sullivan for the second out.

After those base running disasters the assault still continued.

Loiselle gave up a double to catcher Jeff Kobel and two walks to the third pinch hitter used in the inning by Houston, Jason Bennett and Randy Good to load the bases. Steve Whaley (remember him?) singled in two runs to put Houston in charge 4-1.

All Star closer Luis Finley came in to close it out for Houston. Finley struck out the first hitter, Bob Colcolough, and got Hiller on a fly to left for the second out.

Bart Hiller singled and stole second before Finley struck out Bill Rothrock to end the game.

Bailey 2-1 was the winner. Lonnett 1-2 the losing pitcher and Finley earned his sixth save.
