Texas recent winning ways has boosted them to a 14-12 record and they are now four games behind the front running Detroit Devils after winning the first two games of a three games series with Detroit, by scores of 2-0 and 6-3.

Second place Tampa Bay has split the first two games of their three game set with New York and are three games back.

In game one between Texas and Detroit at Crockett Memorial, Texas' starting pitcher Bill Daviault, 3-1 now, after going 7.1 shutout innings and then getting ample relief help from Walt Dalton who got the final two outs of the eighth inning and Jim Leonard pitched the ninth for his fifth save in six save opportunities.

Luis Martinez' (4th) solo shot in the first inning off Detroit starting pitcher Bob Renfroe and Jack Crawford allowed a solo homerun off the bat of pinch hitter Mike Barnes provided the only two runs of the game.

The Rangers made it two straight despite losing their starting pitcher to an ejection in the 5th inning and using five pitchers in the game.

Texas starting pitcher Dick Marshall went 4.2 innings allowing just one hit, and recording three strike outs, gave up a lead off double to Dick Savage to start the 5th inning.

Marshall then got Gus Valdez of a fly to right and Larry Kemmler to bounce to shortstop before he was suddenly tossed by plate umpire Clem Daniels for having a foreign substance on his hat.

Texas argued that it was just greasy kid stuff that Marshall used instead of Brylcreme to no avail. Walt Dalton struck out Red Rodriquez to end the inning but two outs into the sixth he gave up a homerun to Luis Maurer to put Detroit on the score board.

Catcher Joe Cantrell hit a solo homerun in the 6th for Texas and Branston Hodgson hit a two run homerun in the seventh for Texas that gave the Rangers a 6-1 lead that Detroit trimmed two runs off of in the ninth with two hits off Joe Rooney. Cal Rhoades singled and Luis Maurer tripled him in and Dennis Veryzer's ground out got the second run in.

Jim Leonard replaced Rooney and George Burke singled before Dick Savage hit into a 6-4-3 game ending double play.
