1993 Hindsight Draft

June 08, 2017 at 05:33AM View BBCode

Time permitting I'll post an annual look back at the draft from 20 years back for discussion.

The youngest draftees 20 years ago would be at the end of their careers or retired by now. I'll rank them in order of how I'd draft them, in hindsight, with actual draft position in parentheses, and links on names.

Weak draft...at least after the first pick.

1. [url=http://simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=10935224]Thomas Jefferson (1)[/url] - T-Jeff would have probably been the #1 pick in any draft in league history.
2. [url=http://simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=10935248]Rustin Gamwell (6)[/url]
3. [url=http://simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=10935250]Ossie Montague (2)[/url]
4. [url=http://simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=10935273]Clarence Hinchliffe (7)[/url]
5. [url=http://simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=10935240]Bob Kauffman (4)[/url]
6. [url=http://simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=10935288]Babe Thomas (14)[/url]
7. [url=http://simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=10935226]Tom Melillo (3)[/url]
8. [url=http://simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=10935225]Keith Wenz (8)[/url]
9. [url=http://simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=10935324]Bobby Schardley (38)[/url]
10. [url=http://simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=10935314]Eric Skopec (12)[/url]
11. [url=http://simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=10935233]James Lemanczyk (15)[/url]
12. [url=http://simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=10935238]Billy Gardner (16)[/url]

Best 4th round pick: [url=http://simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=10935279]Glenn Sanicki (58)[/url] hit .336 as a 22-year-old rookie in 1994...then never played again!

Best 5th round pick: [url=http://simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=10935275&statsorimps=stats]Brady Blass (74)[/url] batted .667 for the Yankees 1997 championship team.

Great idea.
I would probably choose T-Jeff as the best pitcher ever in the CPBL... and he never won a ring.

It looks like I'm only here for the last 19 seasons because this was the last draft that I didn't participate, so I'm looking forward for next season thread!

Who is the biggest winner of this draft? Boston just because they had the #1 pick in the right moment?

Bobby Schardley...#9 value at pick #38! Nice pick Paul. Looks like he was in a CP deal which gave him a chance to develop in Cincinnati. Sometimes I miss the good ol' days.

I'd say Boston was the clear winner. They sure earned it, finishing 88 games out of first place!

Schardley's primary source of value was "being a catcher" (which is certainly valuable). He'd probably have been a career bench bat otherwise. The CP trades I made around that time were a big reason I was able to build a sustainable contender. I'm masochistically looking forward to trying to climb back up with all the new rules from the rockbottom I'm scheduled to arrive at in 2-4 seasons!

if kept up (doesn't have to be me starting the thread and doing the rankings every year), this should get a lot more interesting once we get to the VI drafts.

Ok...I couldn't even figure out what team was the Yankees in 1997. Guess my team has been chastised enough over the playoff loss and can be known as the Highlanders again. They still can't wear the cool purple uniforms though.
