Colorado -- Brooklyn

The three game series between the first place Colorado Mockingbirds and the challenging Brooklyn Bridge has had more drama that an week day soap opera.

Game one saw one of the league's best starting pitchers completely dominate one of the league's best teams. Chet Douglas once again pitched exceptionally well going eight innings to lower his earned run average to 3.13 and record nine strikeouts.

Paul Golden gave up just one run on five hits over eight innings, as well. The hard luck right hander walked two and struck out nine, but dropped to 4-8 this season when Willie Dallaero hit his tenth homerun in the eight inning with one out.

Douglas allowed just two baserunners over the nine innings. Both got aboard in the 8th inning. Tony Shwinieke singled with two outs breaking up the no-hitter and the perfect game, as well.

Douglas had retired twenty-three straight batters to that point. He then put himself in further trouble by putting the go ahead run on base with a walk when he lost Al Ward on a close 3-2 pitch. Young infielder/outfielder Sean Chambers became the big third out flying out to deep left field.

Tricky Jackson picked up a save in the ninth with a scoreless inning, his 18th.

The
win moved Brooklyn to within one game of the leaders in this three game set.

Colorado 5 Brooklyn 4

The results of game one markedly increased the interest and importance of game two played on Monday, September 9, 1951.

Internationally, Chinese communist forces occupied Lhasa, the capital of Tibet.

In Denver the game was televised nationally on A NBC Special Game of the Week.

Before the game a spectator fell from the upper deck but somehow his fall was broken first by a wire screen and then by Melvin the Mocking Bird, the Colorado mascot, who was performing beneath the unfortunate fan.

The fan identified as Jocko Sczmenawski, a local construction foreman who works on high rise buildings, amazingly received only minor injuries to his back and a cut on his leg when he smashed a bottle of whiskey secreted in the pockets of the thick bird costume worn by Sylvester Slick, an heretofore unemployed bar tender.

Lefty Bob Newkirk, the Colorado wins leader among starting pitchers with an 8-3 record and a 3.84 ERA took the mound for the home team.

Newkirk went eight innings for Colorado gave up three runs on just five hits before leaving with the score tied.

Bill Dorgan (4-5 4.64) suffered the same fate going eight innings also giving up three runs on five hits before being removed for a pinch hitter in the eighth inning.

Bunk Naylor gave the visitors an early run by slugging his 7th homerun of the season.

Walt Johnson walked to the Colorado 3rd inning and then stole his 17th base of the season advancing himself in position to score on a two out single by Jacinto Parraza tying the game 1-1.

One inning later, however, Brooklyn took the lead back. Super star Joe Meakim, leading the league with a .372 batting average hit his second triple of the season and scored on a two out single by Damain Consolo.

Brooklyn added to its lead in the 6th inning. Jeff Rodriquez and Meakim both singled putting runners on fiorst and third. Meakim was caught stealing but Consolo came through with another two out hit driving in Rodriquez to make it 3-1.

Barraza's lined lead off double into the left field corner in the 6th for Colorado. Bob Lynn's single drove in run number two for the Birds.

Pinch hitter Danny Mueller doubled to start the seventh. Larry Garrett was safe on a one out error by Brooklyn catcher Jerrod Hertweck.

Bill Cookson pinch ran for Garrett and stole second base.

Mueller came in to score the tying run on a ground out by pinch hitter Joe Fiene.

There were some defensive changes that turned out to be major factors in the outcome of this game.

Rookie Bob Horton, getting a lot of work down the stretch, came in to pitch.

Rookie catcher Nick Chamberlain took over behind the plate and perhaps most important of all, Danny Mueller stayed in the game to play left field.

Horton experienced a case of nerves during the next inning walking two batters. The first, Walt Sampen, and then after Chamberlain threw out Sampen stealing, he issued the second pass to Jeff Rodriquez who did steal second with two outs.

Horton got a very big out when he struck out Meakim to end the inning.

Brooklyn still took a 4-3 lead in the 9th. Consolo drew the third walk from Horton in two innings and Ed Culloop tripled with one out driving in the go-ahead run.

Jesus Wagner (WP 8-2) got another win out of the bullpen when he kept the score at 4-3 getting the final two outs of the inning getting Bill Lucas on a fly to right and Dellaro on a grounder to third.

Keeping the score at a one run deficit was extremely important because Tony Shwinieke had a lead off double in the bottom of the ninth and trotted home when Danny Mueller, remember him, hit a two run homerun to walk it off for Colorado.
