The Colorado Mockingbirds finished a more difficult than expected six game road trip through Montreal and Los Angeles where they went 1-2, in Montreal, and 3-0 in Los Angeles.
The four consecutive wins gave them a winning road trip at 4-2 and left them with a record of 46-26 and they currently hold a two game lead over Brooklyn and Pittsburgh.
Harry Cheney gave the Mockingbirds something no starter not
named Hoffman has been able to do much recently. Cheney pitched eight innings gave up three earned runs on six hits walked three and struck out six in this game to restore some pride in the Mockingbird starting rotation.
Los Angeles scored the first run of the game when Marty Beckman and Adrian Matchick both singled. Matchick stole second and when catcher Larry Garrett's throw went into center field Beckman scored.
Colorado came back with the tying run in the second inning. Tony Shwinieke tripled and Walt Johnson topped a ground ball in the direction of the Los Angeles second baseman Beckman that scored Shwinieke.
Larry Garrett responded to his throwing error by hitting a two run homerun in the 4th inning. 3-1 Colorado.
Walt Johnson got better results in the sixth inning when he homered off Brooks Bates with two runners on base for a 6-1 Colorado lead.
Verle Olivares had a two run single for Los Angeles in the 7th inning cutting the lead to 6-3.
Harold Parent added a run for Colorado with a single scoring Hughes 7-3.
Hector Escobar could not get through the ninth inning walking Alex Johnson and allowing a RBI double to Emil Bourgois.
Lance Holbert came in to get the final out for his 32nd save.
