Colorado has won their last two games, but no other victories during this campaign have required more time and energy than these two.

The Mockingbirds played 12 innings to eke out a 6-4 win to salvage one of the three games against Montreal on the first leg of this two city trip.

The 22-48 Los Angeles Traffic are 1-9 against the first place Mockingbirds and 1-3 on their home field this season versus Colorado but they gave their best effort in this game and made Colorado go extra innings for the second consecutive game.

This one was a slug fest ending 11-10 in favor of Colorado, but in the early innings it was the home team, Los Angeles, that built a 8-4 lead over the first four innings scoring six runs on eight hits off Colorado starting pitcher Bob Newkirk and two more on one hit off long man Hector Escobar.

Willie Hughes' fourth inning solo homerun made it 8-4 which as it turned out put Colorado within striking distance for their usual 8th inning rally.

For the second straight game Colorado staged a big rally in the eighth inning. This time they scored four runs off Marcos Perez to take a 9-8 lead.

Joe Fiene started things off with a lead off pinch hit double.Sean Chambers singled to right field putting runners on first and third. Johnny Gonzalez batted for pitcher Jay Bottarini and he singled in Fiene. Hughes followed with Colorado's fourth straight hit, a double that plated Chambers.

Drew Storen came in to replace Perez.

Tom Smalley got another run across with a ground out to first and Harold Parent drove in run number four all charged to Perez (0.0 innings pitched four runs on four hits).

Colorado made the comeback thanks to its bullpen once again. Bottarini went 3.1 innings allowed no runs on four hits with three strikeouts.

Bill Campbell pitched one inning; no runs one hit one strikeout.

But Lance Holbert's long string of saves came to an end when he gave up a run on a homerun by Verle Olivares to tie the game.

it was the second homerun allowed by Holbert this season.

Holbert with 31 consecutive saves this season and 9 last season among the 23 he had gave him40 consecutive saves over two seasons and 54 total over two seasons, a NL record.

Robert ''Peanut'' Horton made his major league debut in this game going two innings giving up two hits and one run because one of the hits was a solo homerun by Glenn Milner.

Horton picked up his first career win because that left Los Angeles one run short after the Mockingbirds had scored two runs in the top of the 11th.

lead off batter Tom Smalley singled and Walt Johnson walked with one out. Catcher Larry Garrett doubled to right field driving in both runners. 11-9 Colorado in route to a 11-10 win.

Pittsburgh 7 St. Louis 6

Pittsburgh downed St Louis 7-6 .

Pittsburgh is 42-28 two games behind Colorado tied with Brooklyn. St Louis dropped to 40-30 and four games out.

Scott Cooper hit a two run homerun in the 5th inning for St. Louis to give the Perfectos a 2-1 lead.

Ken Johnson's three run shot an inning later built the lead to 5-1.

Pittsburgh rallied for four runs in its 7th inning to tie the game.

Damian Waslewski invited disaster by walking the first three batters of the inning to load the bases and all three runners would score in the inning,

Jake Lade's sacrifice fly brought in Ron Ireland with the first run.

Slim Leach's single to center scored Bill Etherton and Dee Booty's double drove in both Mark Bell and Leach tying the game 5-5.

Pittsburgh took a 7-5 lead in the 8th inning on a walk to Fernando Tappe, a triple by Ireland and a run scoring single by Mark Bell.

Babe Lucachyk save his 8th game pitching a scoreless ninth inning.

Montreal 6 Brooklyn 5

Montreal took care of Brooklyn 6-5 as Jim Jessie improved to 8-6 on the season.

Joe Meakim hit two homeruns numbers 13 and 14, and Bill Lucas his 12th, in the losing cause.

Joe Delahanty hit his first for Montreal.
