New timeout rules

April 08, 2017 at 09:02PM View BBCode

I am planning to add new rules for calling timeouts on defense. Although there are rules to call timeouts when you are losing, there are none to call a timeout when you are tied or ahead by a single score.

So these are the rules I am planning to add. The first rule would cover when you are ahead by a field goal or less and the opponent is approaching field goal range, and the second would cover when you are ahead by a TD or less and the opponent is in/approaching the red zone.

On defense, call a time out:

- At the end of (a half, the game), if there are (180) or fewer seconds left on the clock and you are tied or ahead by (2,3) or less and the offense is (60) or fewer yards from the goal line.

- At the end of (a half, the game), if there are (180) or fewer seconds left on the clock and you are tied or ahead by (5,6,7,8) or less and the offense is (30) or fewer yards from the goal line.

- Do not call the final timeout unless there are (30) or fewer seconds remaining in the half.

Opinions of these before I code them?

Nice changes, Chris! I particularly like the, "Do not call the final timeout unless there are (30) or fewer seconds remaining in the half" rule. This would be an offensive TO, right. On defense you would want to preserve time to get the ball back.

On the thread that started this (FHFL) there was a question regarding scenarios where a team would call a TO at the end of the half but not at the end of the game and I thought of one. You would want to call a TO at the end of the half on defense when your team is ahead. It's common for a defense to call a TO when they have the other team deep in their end on 4th down with the clock running. Rather than losing that time or letting the clock run out, the D will call a TO to force the other team to punt.

Also, minor detail, you wouldn't want to stop the clock if the other team is out of TOs and the clock is running with not enough time to get the FG off. Imagine the b*tchin if someone's D stops the clock with 2 seconds left and the other team kicks the winning FG:o:lol:

This is actually on the defense side, meant to preserve a timeout for a field goal. Although I can add one to the offense side too. Although actually using both would make little sense.

I'll take a look at this.
