Zeta Contraction Test

March 14, 2017 at 08:32PM View BBCode

The football leagues have been designed to do something the baseball leagues can't do: change size between seasons.

More than half the Zeta league has gone inactive, so I am going to test some code to drop Zeta from 32 teams to 16 teams. If this works properly, all league history should be preserved; the league will simply contract, all players on the teams contracting out of existence will retire, and the league will continue on as normal.

If it DOESN'T work properly, any number of odd things might happen: looking at prior seasons standings may show the wrong number of teams, teams that have contracted out may throw errors if you try to look at old games involving them, etc.

If this is successful, the next step will be to allow people to buy into existing leagues and have them expand.

The offseason may be paused for a couple of days while I work on this.

This is not going well and I have heart surgery next week so I am going to release the Zeta offseason and let it continue. I'll pick this up after I get out of the hospital.

Thank you all, I am back from surgery; it wasn't completely smooth but my heart works now and that's the important thing. :)

I am working on contraction again. Here is what I have in mind:

- Up until week 12, if a team has more available teams than the difference between the league size and the next size down, and those teams have been available for more than a month, the league will contract in the offseason.

- A distribution draft will be held before the college draft, with 1 round for every 2 departing teams up to a maximum of 4 rounds. Draft order will be the same as for the college draft.

- The players not selected in the distribution draft will retire rather than go to the waiver wire. (I may take this moment to look at the wire and if any positions are badly underrepresented on the wire (DTs and Kickers, I'm looking at you), allow some of the players slated to retire to go to the wire instead.)

- The league will realign after contracting.

Originally I was just going to retire all of the players in the departing teams, but I decided that the league may be a bit demoralized during a contraction and the distribution draft will both give a boost of excitement and help balance out the bottom teams (which may be strongly wondering if they want to stay).

Any thoughts?

I love the dispersal draft idea. guaranteed interest generator. I think i'd either retire everyone left over or retire none of them. retiring some but not others is just going to create confusion and frustration, imo.

I think I got contracted:lol:

I can't get to my team, it tells me my subscription expired. I haven't been checking in regularly because the league was stalled but I am still interested in doing this. Can I get back in? It doesn't have to be the same team.
Thanks,
Jack

Hey Chris, is the contraction still going forward here?
