Gotta ask the serious question

March 02, 2017 at 12:04AM View BBCode

With my efforts to turn this team around and attempt to become competitive. I am going the wrong away. Here is the question- With the with our format and me not winning and me not getting the top pick by our lottery system is there a good chance I get stuck down here and am never able to get out because my picks wont develop to their fullest potential?

Haha - I feel your pain... I think we may be in similar circumstances. The format makes it really hard to recover from rock bottom.

I've discussed this with other people and you can't compete with the normal full tear down and build up cycles. You may need to take a double dip approach and sell off some of your younger players when you're just starting to turn around for a haul of picks and prospects. Either that or never get to this point and you do well with those middle round picks.

Or you can be Detroit and win the lottery a bunch of times with an already good team. That is my new strategy. Just need a good team to start with.

Colorado, the Black Sox and Florida have all turned it around from the cellar. It's possible but losing a ton of games isn't the harmless endeavor it used to be.

The difficulty level in this league is very hard because of the set of rules and all experienced owners we have.

In this league we should avoid been a very bad team. But if you already can't win games, the strategy I would recommend is this (a never tested strategy, be aware!):

Draft well - taking a mediocre import player in early 1st round won't help your WPM and will hurt your future.

Draft young - An OS 18 y/o can develop well away from the majors (and the dreaded WPM) form many season

Keep them in the minors - With system 5 you can develop 7 or more players very well in the minors. I would keep all promising hitters at least untill they are 23 and all promising pitchers at least they are 25/26.

Trade what you can't develop to help WPM, but dont give away your best prospects. A 3rd round pick is usually useless if you have too many prospects and can give you a decent very old veteran.

But the most important is drafting. 2ndCos: I think you drafted well in this last year, with patience you will get there. Also your team is not that bad, I dont understand how you have such a bad record this season.

To make things clear: I'm not trying to give anyone an advise about how to rebuild here, I haven't rebuild in these rules and I'm probably the most unexperienced player in this league. I'm just saying what I would do to advance further on the discussion. I'm also not saying this is easy, rebuilding here is not easy because of the rules and the good owners

Draft Young for sure 17 and 18 year old . My best players are actually those I drafted young mid first round picks, not my lottery first picks as pointed out by Kahuna in his latest prospects post. (see my top two SP). What has made it even more difficult is the talent level at the top of the AL. I have built back up but have struggled to get to above .500.

Yep it is hard, I punted my vets this year, we were not going anywhere this year anyway, so now ABE has 6 guys under 30 injured for me, going to be a while for the Bohs...

Yep, I was last the last two years, and got the #4 pick both times... and both guys appear to be busts. The year before I got Layden at #5... he seemed good the first two years of improves; this year he's 5/33... so maybe he's an enigma. Tough to rebuild that way! Lol.
