Fred Lake AL League Scores

The 1951 season is off to a roaring start and has the promise of greatly resembling the four team race the American League had last season when four teams, Detroit, Washington, Seattle and Toronto all finished within four games of first place Tampa Bay.

Washington and Detroit have jumped out to identical 6-1 records for the new season and both won their most recent contests.

Washington 4 Toronto 3

The Senators edged Toronto 4-3 behind Jeff Prokopsec who went eight innings for his first victory of the season. The thirty year old right hander gave up three runs (two earned) walked three and recorded eight strikes to best a tough cookie in Earl Bauer.

Bauer, a thirty one year old right hander was 7-8 for Toronto last season is now 0-1 in two starts. Bauer has gone seven innings in both his starts thus far, allowed nine hits and four runs (three earned) in this one, with four strikeouts and one walk.

Washington claimed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. The run was in-earned because of the pitcher, Bauer's own two base throwing error on Pat Merriam's tap down the third base line.

LF Doug Jones singled in Merriam. Jones picked up on waivers by Washington was originally with Montreal, who traded him to Anaheim with pitcher Paul Collins and a second round draft pick for pitcher Steve Beard.

Jones played in one game for Anaheim before he eventually was put on waivers and picked up by Washington where he has flourished with Washington.

Trailing 1-0 Toronto's Kory Patterson lead off the second inning with a single. Washington shortstop Jimmy Andrews turned in a web gem when he robbed Earl Gearin of a hit with a sparkling stop of a sizzling ground ball getting a force out of Patterson at second.

Zeb Cross singled to left field. Gearin went to third base on the play.

Tim Marone drove him in the tying run, 1-1, with Toronto's third hit of the inning.

Prokopsec escaped further damage by striking out Bauer and John Coleman.

Toronto came up with three more hits in the third inning to take a 2-1 lead. Roy Herman, Chief Peterson and Kory Patterson ll came up with hits.

Jones singled with one out in the bottom of the 5th before Jimmy Andrews hit a two run homerun to give Washington a 3-2 lead.

Washington added on a run in the bottom of the 5th inning.

Russell McCathers singled with two outs off Bauer and Andrews drove in his third run of the game putting Washington ahead 4-1

The Washington bullpen duo of Damaso Schleuter and Buzz O'Hara combined for two scoreless innings to put it in the win column for the Senators.

O'Hara has three saves this season.

Detroit 6 Kansas City 4 -- [11 innings]

Lennie Bean had a game to tell his grandchildren about collecting four hits, scoring four runs and driving in two more, which just happened to be the winning runs with an eleventh inning two run homerun.

Detroit is 6-1 and three of its wins have come in extra innings. Detroit's bullpen has gone 3-0 as a result. Gaylord Hendrix, Nick Shirley, and now Bill Latimer are all 1-0.

Randy Easley's two run homer in the second inning gave Toronto an early 2-0 lead.

Detroit scored an unearned run in the 3rd inning to cut the lead in half, 2-1. First baseman Frank Ozmer dropped a throw allowing Joe Pukturis to reach with one out.

Pitcher Bid Kramer sacrificed the runner to second.

Toronto starter Bob Harkey recorded ten strikeouts but also walked a couple and one of those was to Pol Banta in this inning. Bill Martinez followed with a run scoring single.

Lennie Bean took over the game completely at this point getting one of his four hits (batting .367) also scored one of his four runs in the game as well to tie the score 2-2.

Bean started the 6th inning with a hit and scored on Bill Mallicoat's double that gave Detroit a 3-2 lead that vanished when Kansas City scored single runs in the 7th and 8th innings. Bean scored the tying run in the 8th inning for Detroit on a Bill Mallicoat single to left field.

It seemed fitting after having such a great game that Bean come through and win it in extra innings and that is just what happened when Bean hit a two run homerun off Phil Rhodes in the 11th inning.

High drama in the playoffs last year. Tampa down 3-1 in the ALCS before coming back to beat Detroit 4-3. Then, the WS goes 7 games with Chicago finally coming out on top.

It was indeed a great season. No team was really hurt by retirements so it most likely will be another competitive season this year. I have a team in the Freddi Gonzalez League that has been doing well but this league is special so as long as some of you will reply from time to time I'll try to summarize the games.

Bear in mind I am 67 years old and my mind tires and wonders and my body left town for oblivion ten years ago, so at times I can't write all of the games I would or should get to.

During the playoff my youngest so was hospitalized for kidney stones and I missed that completely.

So stay tuned the season is underway!
