The pennant race in the American League continues to be tight with four teams within three games of first place. Detroit, Tampa Bay and Washington continue to do battle for the two playoff spots in the ALCS.
Washington and Seattle, 7-3 in their last team are the hottest two ball clubs.
Detroit picked up a big win over Oakland, losers in seven of their last ten games, taking a 4-1 victory. Detroit's ace right hander, Greg Waitkus, 11-3 2.20.
Waitkus has started 16 games worked 123 innings allowed 92 hits walked 33 and struck out 106.
Detroit scored its first run in the second inning. Kent Cassidy doubled to open the second the inning. after Bill Mallicoat and Russ Hutson flied out Joe Piktuzis doubled driving in Cassidy.
1-0 Detroit.
The Kities added two runs to their lead in the 6th when Piktuzis doubled with two outs off relief pitcher Danny Padgro.
Detroit 3-0.
Bruce Groos homered, his sixth, in the 7th inning off Waitkus. Waitkus has now allowed 11 home runs and opponents are hitting .205.
Waitkus singled to start the 7th. and scored on a ground out by Cassidy.

Kansas City 6 Anaheim 5 (11 Innings)
Winning pitcher Paddy Batton went three innings 2 hits 5 strikeouts) in relief of Bob Harkey (7.2 innings pitched 5 hits 4 runs (earned) 2 walks 8 strikeouts). Rob Saddall got the final out in the 8th inning.
Anaheim scored a run in the 6tgh inning when John Reis walked and Sammy Banks doubled.
Banks hit a three run homerun in the 8th off Rob Seddall.
Rollin Hanna doubled and scored to tie the game 5-5.
Kansas City scored the winning run in the bottom of 11th inning. Bill Estelle walked and scored on Joe Crisp's double.
Final 6-5 in 11 innings.

Jack Dibble evened his record at 6-6 and Alex Milchin dropped his sixth straight decision to drop to 3-9.

Washington 3 Seattle 1
Washington has improved both its starting rotation and bullpen through trades and its minor league system. But over the last six starts by the number five starter Washington has been 0-6.
With the addition of Jeff Prokopec, right hander Dave Kinder was put in the five slot and he became the fifth straight pitcher to take a loss.
The old saying that your momentum is only a good as your next starting pitcher and after that loss Washington sent right hander Charles Johnson to the mound to oppose a tough cookie, Billy Walton.
Johnson went eight innings allowed five hits and one run walking three and striking out seven.
Washington took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on Jimmy Andrews 4th homerun of the season.
Andrews has hit .345 over his last ten games (10-29 scored six runs driven in five. Andrews has hit two homeruns.)
Seattle tied the game in the bottom of the first inning when Johnson walked Jay Buhner and Buhner stole second and scored on Tino Martinez' line drive single to left field.
Russell McCathers homered (7th) in the fourth inning putting Washington ahead 2-1.
Kelly Green's 12th home run of the season made the final score 3-1
Buzz O'Hara picked up save number 13 with a scoreless ninth.
Johnson is 10-4 for the season with a 2.40 ERA.
