The Pittsburgh Pirates have won fifteen of their first nineteen games, three straight. This reason for this is clear.
The Pirates have a .319 team batting average, first in the league.
The pitching staff has a 3.24 ERA, second in the league and a fielding percentage of .985, third in the league.
The Pirates finished a three game home series with Montreal with a win completing a sweep of the Expos.
Montreal scored a run in the first inning on a single by Dennis Loughlin off Joe Conroy.
Conroy (4-0 2.70 ERA) hung around for eight innings ( six hits 3 runs, 2 walks 4 strikeouts.) Conroy also helped himself considerably with his bat going two for two, scored a run and drove in two. For the season he is 4-14 (286) with 3 runs batted in.
The Pirates sent nine batters to the plate, had six hits one walk and scored five runs. All the scoring came with two outs.
Sam Machemer singled with two outs. Montreal starting pitcher Damoin McDonald walked catcher A. J. Musser. Alberto Martini singled Musser to third.
Dave Drake liner split the outfielder and went to the wall in left center field for a double scoring both Musser and Martini.
Pitcher Joe Conroy singled in Drake.
Frankie Smith's double got Conroy in safely to give Pittsburgh a 5-1 lead.
Montreal's best scoring inning was the fifth inning when Dennis Loughlin and pinch hitter Ramiro Gallivan both hit solo home runs to narrow Pittsburgh's lead to 5-3.
Pittsburgh did not fold. The Pirates added on a run in the sixth.
Musser walked to begin the sixth. Dave Drake's was flagged down by third baseman Rafael Rosario. Rosario's only play was to first allowing Musser to advance.
Conroy singled in Musser with two outs.
Pittsburgh final run was driven in by Jim Malloy with a double off Jim Sharrott to make the final score 7-3.
Florida won its fourth straight defeating the Cubs in Chicago 8-5.
