My Beloved Minnesota Vikings

April 29, 2016 at 10:12AM View BBCode

From 1967 I have suffered through the Good The Bad the ugly "It's hurt and hurt so bad".... such as the Moss destruction of Dallas on that lovely Thursday or maybe Monday or both... to watching the Pittsburgh Steroids hurting Tarkenton. or The 15-1 getting ruined by A Cowardly 2 Minute Chickened out coach who played it stupid safe vs Atl (We would have destroyed Denver) or Brett blowing a pass late to a lesser New Orl squad " I cried for real that evening at work"or the Gimpy kick that failed last season. But Over 6 Months ago I actually got on my knees and prayed to our either real or Invented GOD " to keep us in line" for MY only team and Beloved Vikings to Draft 1 and only 1 player and Behold I can't believe it.

23. Minnesota Vikings: WR Laquon Treadwell ? This makes too much sense. Teddy Bridgewater doesn't need a deep threat -- he needs a chain mover, and a physical one, such as Treadwell. This is an inspired choice that could reshape the Vikings' offense. He'll be a great No. 1 option in the red zone and is also the best blocking receiver in the draft by a mile. A great choice at this point of the draft.

I expect either cueball or aparicio or both to invite me to the 2018 S.B. game INDEED.

I am sure with so many day in day out players many of us can tell us about your team..

Sigh, how about Sam Bradford suddenly thinking he's Tom Brady or something and demanding a trade (after already signing a contract) because he's too weaksauce to compete against a rookie that isn't projected to even play for like two years? You think YOUR teams have it bad? Apparently, his agent claims Bradford had no idea this team was rebuilding and is crying because we traded a bunch of picks for a QB instead of giving him players around him to help him. Did Sam Bradford NOT watch his own tape of last season or realize he failed to complete 16 games for like the third time in a row?

I literally cannot watch any sport in Philadelphia right now. Phillies? Sixers? Eagles now are on the crap-list while they rebuild and I can't watch hockey. Not that the Flyers are doing that much better than the rest of our franchises. And what's so depressing is that besides the Eagles, no team in my city has any real plan to get back to a winning season.

If Bradford goes, that's a second round pick and 11 mil down the drain. Thanks Chip Kelly, hope you burn in hell

Since the Oilers went out of business, I've not really had a team. I live in Virginia, and it's interesting to see how the Redskins are trying to become a quality organization again, primarily through hiring a solid G.M.

The team I wish I had control over is the Detroit Lions (or the Browns.) The two dominant teams of the 1950s have been doo-doo for the bulk of my life, expect for the Erik Kramer Lions in '91 (when Barry Sanders was an after-thought in a Run-'n-Shoot Offense, one of the worst mismatches of talent and strategy ever devised. But the R'nS was the "hot" scheme at the time, see the Oilers.) And the Kosar Browns, but I never saw Kosar in his prime.

It sounds like the Lions are trying, like the Redskins, to redefine their sorry fortunes with a new G.M. They took an O-lineman with their First Rder, and that's what bad teams do to become good teams: they fortify the non-sexy positions, the trenches.

The Browns are collecting Draft picks, but I hope they don't end up like the Philly 76ers in the NBA, gaining assets but helpless to convert them to success.

Two things about the Lions: they need to switch their uniforms back to their Barry Sanders classics, including the helmet logo, which I used to think wasn't that great but works better as a non-detailed graphic.

And the second thing: they need to ditch the dome stadium and, like the Vikings, Bears, and Packers, play in the snow-blasted tundra. Because the weather is a HUGE advantage for all those teams, and the Vikings realized this. Any wonder they won their division for the first time in a decade or whatever it was?

Why in god's name wouldn't you want to return to these gorgeous unis?

As A Jets fan, I really was not excited by the pick of LB Lee from Ohio State.....hes a great athlete but he doesn't look really strong enough to be a linebacker in the middle of the 3-4, which is what it sounds like they are counting on him for. Who would I have liked at that spot? Maybe a corner......maybe even a WR, I know we have Decker and Marshall but neither is a spring chicken, and in this league when can you have enough weapons? Also, I would have loved to see them trade up and get Tunsil........D'Brickshaw retired and we really have a need there.

Round 2, get us a damn quarterback, but only if Cook or Hackenberg is there. Fitz was great for us, but no way anyone should pay him more than 8 million a year, and he wants 16. Screw that. I would let Geno have one more chance, play Petty if he sucks as usual, and then work in the rookie when the season is screwed. Otherwise, trade a 4th rounder or something for Sam Bradford. I know he is more fragile than a member of One Direction, but hey, we could use a quarterback with some talent.

Nobody is stupid enough to do what the 76ers did. It was particularly stupid because the NBA has a draft lottery.

I agree, Lee doesn't sound like a strong MLB, but they love his coverage abilities. So he's more like a Strong Safety. And apparently the MLB covers the Tight End in defensive schemes nowadays, so that means the Jets are trying to put a LB on New England's Gronkowski.

I'm thinking the Jets are thinking they have to stop the Pass, and NE lives passing to TEs so much, and so on. And really, none of the AFC East teams have strong running games, just adequate, and not much of a threat.

Myles Jack ----- A high pay off gamble for a team willing to wait for 2017 --- Unless GB or NE get him let's hope the heal is 100%. I loathe these 2 teams with a fury.

Buccs fan here.... all I can say is wtf!!!! Who in their right mind gives up a 3rd and 4th to draft a kicker in the second round!?!?!?! Is he talented yes. Is he the best kicker to ever come out of the ncaa? Yes. Should he have gone in the seconomy on a trade that lost a 3rd and 4th when the defense still needs help not even close! Biggest bone head move of the decade there

Ok just now caught up and is this for real 54th we get a top 20 talent that had some bad interviews...... The secondary gets nastier but Minnesota still has to depth the O-line.

Round 1 - #21. Houston Texans: Will Fuller, WR, Notre Dame
http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-combine/0ap3000000643685/2016-Combine-workout-Will-Fuller
This pick makes a ton of sense to me. He has totally legit speed (4.32 40); a game-changer from a speed perspective. He tracks the deep ball extremely well. I worry about his hands. He's a little bit like Ted Ginn of the Panthers. He will make big plays, but you will have to put up with a few drops.

Round 2 - #50. Nick Martin, C, Notre Dame
http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-combine/0ap3000000643374/2016-Combine-workout-Nick-Martin
The Texans signed a quarterback in free agent. So, first you draft a wide receiver in Will Fuller. Then, you draft one of the top centers in the draft. Martin could play in the league for 10 years. Texans already know what to expect from Nick, as his brother Zack excelled in his first two seasons with Dallas after being selected in the first round in 2014. Nick will bring versatility along with the family toughness to an NFL team. He moves between center and guard without an issue (started at left guard 10 games in 2014, three games at center that year as well as most of 2013 and all of 2015), displaying a strong anchor in pass pro and nimble feet to attack linebackers in the run game.

Round 3 -#85. Braxton Miller, WR, Ohio State
http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-combine/0ap3000000643855/2016-Combine-workout-Braxton-Miller
http://www.nfl.com/videos/greatest-cfb-plays/0ap3000000556435/Braxton-Miller-s-epic-spin-move-en-route-to-TD-Ohio-State-vs-Virginia-Tech-2015
Ohio State coach Urban Meyer: "He has a great skill set. He was a back-to-back player of the year in the Big Ten. He's a very elusive player and has top-end speed. He was a great teammate; elected captain for us."

Round 4 - #119. Tyler Ervin, RB, San Jose State

He's a third-down, change-of-pace guy. Put on his take against Auburn, the kid ran 27 times for 160 yards. He catches the football extremely well, and will be a nice balance with Lamar Miller.

Round 5 - #159 K.J. Dillon, S, West Virginia
http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-combine/0ap3000000644989/2016-Combine-workout-KJ-Dillon
Athletic safety who flashes enough ability high and low to believe that he won’t be pigeonholed as one type of safety or another. Dillon has the athleticism and ball skills to help in man coverage and enough awareness from the high safety spot to handle his duties. Dillon has allowed entirely too many missed or broken tackles over the last couple of seasons, but that can be improved with more muscle on his frame and a more technique-driven approach. Intriguing prospect with developmental traits.

Round 5 - #166 DT D.J. Reader, Clemson
http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-combine/0ap3000000645355/2016-Combine-workout-D-J-Reader
Squatty, strong nose tackle who is able to push smaller centers around in phone booth battles, but unable to consistently be a disruptive force up front. Reader has the strength and potential to believe that his Senior Bowl flashes could turn into something more in the NFL, even though that might just be as a career backup.

As a Los Angeles Rams fan, use to hang out at training camp as a kid, even got a piggy back ride from Deacon Jones, was happy we finally got our QB in Jared Goff.

Some say we gave up way too much to move up but in reality we really only gave up a 1st, 2nd and 3rd rounder. The other 2nd rounder was from Philly for cry baby Bradford. The 3rd rounder next year is going to comp pick we are going to get for losing 2 starters to free agency.

Plus the Rams have had so many draft picks since the RGIII trade, our defense is strong, they have drafted 4 Offensive Linemen last 2 years, so we really didn't need a bunch of picks. Just a few quality picks.

In the 4th round we got TE Tyler Higbee, 6'6" 249 out of Western Kentucky and WR Pharoh Cooper 5'11" 203 out of South Carolina to give Goff some more targets.

I think we might have a chance to make the playoffs soon.

Well, I know the WR has one of the coolest names of all time, perfect for a LA star, if he turns out to be such.

Hard to say about Goff, but LA did what they felt they had to. Unless Goff is the next RG III busto; personally I think it's poor management trading up for a QB unless you're 100% sure the QB can play. But I guess there's no way to know that.

I always think about the Drew Bledsoe/ Rich Mirer debate when those two went one-two in the, what, '92 Draft? '93? I mean, I felt like Bledsoe out of Washington St. had everything to be a Pro (at that time: size and arm and smarts,) while Mirer was a smaller guy out of an overrated Notre Dame program. And he had a little hobbit face and looked about as threatening.

At least neither the Patriots or Seahawks had to trade a haul of picks to get either guy, as they'd earned their records to draft high. And Bledsoe never gets the credit he should for being the crucial moment the Patriots actually turned their pathetic fortunes around. HC Parcells was integral, of course, but Bledsoe was the star and was so good that Parcells changed his offensive scheme from the "3 yards and a cloud of dust" offense to Bledsoe slinging it 50 times a game. Got them to a Super Bowl, Parcells pulled a WWF heel move and jumped to the Jets, the Patriots hired Belichick and Bledsoe punctured a lung and was replaced by Tom Brady. And history played out in the Pats' favor.

Far as it goes, when it comes to getting a QB in the NFL, and the team stinks, I think you have to let the cards fall and take what comes. Like, trading multiple picks for an unknown commodity is bad business. There are more busto QBs than successful QBs drafted; I'd rather take my chance trading for a back-up if I had to have a QB, like Garoppolo in New England. Give the Pats a Third and bring the guy in, and if he is good you've solved the problem. If not, he was a Third Rd sacrifice. Or do what the Texans did, sign a young Free Agent with potential and take your chances. I don't think that bozo Houston signed from Denver is the answer, but it's just money. They can eat the money on a bad signing.

If you don't do that, NFL teams, then you draft a QB according to your position. The Redskins traded away picks for RG III, but they still drafted Cousins in the 4th Rd. He's the starter now. They could have saved themselves the trouble; the coaching staff knew RG III would never cut it in the long run, while Cousins had smarts and ability if given a chance. The RG III trade was made by a dysfunctional owner and his toadies.

Keep your picks, draft a QB when they come up in your slot. That's how you do it.

UNLESS, of course, like the Rams and the Eagles, you think you're a QB away from contending.

But come on--a rookie QB isn't leading either of those teams to championships in the next three seasons. Given that Jeff Fisher will probably be fired after another losing season, and the Eagles are rebuilding, I don't see success. I think Goff and the Rams, if they get lucky, will hire a coach who can lead them to winning. And I love Fisher, myself, but Fisher's underwhelming record overall kind of speaks for itself at this point.

So trading the picks for Goff and Wentz were probably certainly desperation moves in an NFL that depends on immediate results. The Win-Now mentality, even if there's no chance the teams can win-now. It's a poor way to go about things.

The thing is the Rams don't stink. They beat the teams in their division, have a great defense and was actually a QB and WR, TE away from competing for the division.

We didn't need all those draft picks because we are so young that we are letting former first rounders go because of the salary cap. Can Fisher pull it off is something to be seen.

I wonder if their new geography comes in handy?
