Our Record So Far: 0-1-0

From the American Football Conference

British Columbia 45s (0-0-0) @ Buffalo Tigers (0-0-0)

After another rough start to the season, the 45s face off against the team that's quickly become the nemesis of the division, if not the conference, the Buffalo Tigers. Blowing away the poor San Diego Yipee Express yesterday in a thirty-three point knock out, Walt Mills and company look to get their first division win of the season against this sleeping giant which has only had more time to craft an offense around slinger, Sammy Baugh. The 45s put up a good effort yesterday against young QB Fod Fitzgerald Jr. and the rabid squirrels, closing the gap to within a possession by the end of the third quarter, but a costly interception in Minnesota territory off a wide pass may have the 45s management rethinking their philosophy of power first, accuracy later. If they can repeat their performance at home with a few more accurate passes and some better pass protection, this could be a fight.

Philadelphia Federalists @ Brooklyn Giants

Paul Nichols is quickly arriving at the category of draft bust. Wildly outpaced yesterday by Art Christansen, a QB who didn't even start for Houston until his second year, they face no easier task against the Philly Feds. Last Sunday, Tim Tebow showing no signs of going gray turning in a two-touchdown, no-interception performance that helped propel the Feds to an embarassing twenty-nine point slaughter against the Boston Ghouls who could not get into the endzone once in spite of completing 65% of their passes and running for 4.7 yards per carry. It will be up to the defense in Brooklyn to make a stand at home after giving up twenty-eight points against the Galaxy in spite of picking Art Christensen off four times and limiting them to under four yards a carry. Time is running out for Nichols, the former first round pick, to do better than his performance last week only completing thirty-three percent of his passes and throwing an interception. Defensive Tackle Carl Mathis and guard Emil Marsh are both doubtful for the game making the fans with tickets to the game a bit more than worried.

Inter-Conference Play

Cleveland Noise (0-0-0) @ New Orleans REBELS (0-0-0)

I wasn't surprised at all to see Cleveland suddenly pull off a huge conference win last Sunday against the Cobras because I've known this coach for a very long and knew that it was only a matter of time before he had the pieces in place he wanted. Let's look at that win for a moment. The Cobras held the Noise scoreless through the entire first half and were up by seven points in the fourth when suddenly a field goal and a terrible interception from Darnell Clay led to their most impressive drive of the game, and again minutes later off another interception putting Cleveland at first and goal. The REBELS come into this game almost pulling off a massive comeback in the fourth quarter against the defensive giants, the Steelers but with the heart of this team, Billy O'Sullivan out to pasture on another team, this looks to be much more of a rebuilding year. Always-the-backup-never-the-starter, Rob Richey, had a fair game throwing two touchdowns and throwing for over two hundred yards, but also throwing two costly interceptions leading to ten points of the eventual Steelers victory of seven. Things in Cleveland are getting interesting, but the puzzle still is not complete making this an intruging game between two rebuilding franchises headed by two interesting coaching minds who likely aren't actively trying to lose.

From the National Football Conference

Arizona Desert Shaman (0-0-0) @ St. Louis Lions (0-0-0)

The post-Wingate era in Arizona got off to a surprising start in a fourth quarter comeback victory against playoff contenders, the Portland Wolves. The sophomore quarterback who was booed during the preseason showing signs of fight in him as he led his team to victory with two touchdowns and a single interception completing nearly 60% of his passes. This came about after Culp led his team on an impressive drive after a great punt return going 5/6 for 38 yards and a touchdown taking the lead early in the fourth quarter. The defense came up big with a game-saving interception at their own two yard line. Meanwhile, in St. Louis, a sound victory over the team that traded to get Wingate, Saskatchewan, where Wingate played well, but not well enough to compensate for the way in which the Lions stopped the run and forced them to rely too heavily on the pass. Mitchell had a modest day, one touchdown off twenty passes out of thirty one attempts, but the defense held up. After defensive end Kalimba Edwards was taken out with a shoulder muscle strain, it'll be interesting to see if they can complete that kind of game management against Arizona who is looking to prove to their fans and the world that they did not make a mistake moving past the era of Paige Wingate.

New Jersey Sharks (0-0-0) @ Louisville Leprechauns (0-0-0)

Uh-oh, Louisville has a quarterback, and he happens to be the top one in the league. What's frightening about this, is that Lousville defeated the blizzard with seemingly no problem without even starting Billy O'Sullivan. Actual starter, likely fighting for his job, E.B. Mike, did not play well at all, but they generated three interceptions and sacked poor aging Joe "Meh" Mehelich nine times for fifty five yards. That's only twenty-three yards less than what E.B. Mike actually threw, and this team still won the game by ten points. New Jersey put up a good effort against the team that nearly went undefeated last season, Tennessee, but came up short undoubtedly causing Kelly Cindrich to further wonder how his legacy will be remembered when he retires. Cindrich finished against Tennesee with one touchdown and one interception and although he completed nearly sixty-percent of his passes, management and ownership may be eyeing an escape path from Cindrich this or next season should the aging quarterback not show some signs of life especially if Billy O'Sullivan indeed makes his debut in Louisville green. Guard Jon Weaver is out with a finger fracture for New Jersey, further complicating things. Now in his tenth season with the Sharks, Cindrich's overall quarterback rating is a mere 65.7 and he has thrown twenty-six more interceptions than touchdowns only just breaking the 100 mark last season.

Game of the Week

San Francisco Cyclons (0-0-0) @ Montreal Snipers (0-0-0)

Montreal had a rough go last season, and things didn't look much better last Sunday against Virginia. After talks to trade once-Golden-Boy quarterback Hoyle Thomas broke down and he started in the opener in Virginia, he layed another rotten egg throwing for no touchdowns and no interceptions and only 179 yards in spite of 46 pass attempts (that's a mere 3.9 yards per pass attempt). Granted, the loss was due in large part due to returning Jim McCollough simply tearing up the field in his return with a 130 yard game, Montreal ran the ball fairly well too but a failed two-point conversion in the second quarter led to the Snipers not seeing a tie or the lead for the remainder of the game as the second half played out in a battle of field goals. The Cyclons shocked many as they started rookie Canute Powell over last season's starter Kevin Fitzhugh leaving some to wonder if there is a quarterback contraversy brewing. Powell threw for 220 yards and five touchdowns completing 81% of his passes, so I'd say, yes. With Fitzhugh still an ever-present threat throwing for a touchdown himself late in the third quarter one has to wonder if Powell will start in Montreal as well and will the coaching staff end up regretting or benefiting from that choice?

Quarterback Power Rankings
1. Canute Powell - San Fransisco Cyclons - 17/20 (85%), 220 Yards, 5 TD
2. Walt Mills - Buffalo Tigers - 11/16 (68.8%), 164 Yards, 2 TD
3. Fod Fitzgerald Jr. - Minnesota Tree Dwellers - 12/15 (80%) 170 Yards
4. Nolan Creed - Washington Capitolists - 20/30 (66.7%), 262 Yards, 3 TD, 1 INT
5. Stud Stauch - Cleveland Noise - 15/19 (78.9%), 122 Yards, 1 TD
