OS 20 in majors?
December 17, 2015 at 05:50PM View BBCode
I've got a decent (but not great) 19 yr old (OS 20) position player in the minors that I can only put 2 CPs on. If I brought him up to the majors and played him every day, would there be any difference in his development?
I'm sure he'll convert at a lower rate, but he'll also earn more chances. Anyone have any info that supports or discourages an early call up in this scenario?

Would be nice if you linked to your depth chart.
OS20 is way too young to bring him up (and when does he actually become 20?). With 2 CPs, he'll get an average of 42 ICs that will convert at an incredible rate (usually, depending on how good he already is...a link gives us more info...). In the majors, the conversions will be awful.

Here's an example of a player promoted that early:

He was 19 (hit 20 in the OS), got a ton of chances in power vRHP so lucked out there with improves that first season. But check out the defense: only 6 for 16 on a D+ or C- bundle at that age is wretched. He would have likely converted all of them in the minors.
Overall at that age, he converted only 19 of 56. With 2 CPs assigned, he probably converts around twice that.
Again, it all depends on the prospect. But this guy was pretty much ruined. He likely would have ended up B/A+ vRHP with red-letter speed and B or B+ defense. Now he'll maybe make B-/A+ with B speed (with low A+ power) and play Canseco defense.

At OS20 he's better off in the minors with 2 CPs than in the majors, many, many years ago I had an initial draft team with way too much youth and was forced to play [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?player=nobody&mode=stats&id=3663427]Dobler[/url] in the majors (I wasn't actually forced but he was the best option).
Dobler was B-/B+, B-/A- with C speed and orange defense at the start of his 1st season. As you can see he converted only 39 of 139 at OS19/20 and 26 of those 39 were speed and defense. Dobler turned out just fine as he picked up his % after those 2 years, he was good offensively to start with and his A+ health let him average over 70 ics a year at the major league level but it's certainly not a route I would recommend.

Thanks guys; that's the sort of info I was hoping for. 95 games into the season, the player in question has converted 16 of 22 chances.

At OS20, the conversion rate of a position player in the majors is roughly half of the conversion rate in the minors. So a guy with 0 CPs is better off starting in the majors, with 2 CPs better in the minors.
At OS21, the conversion rate in the majors seems to be roughly 2/3 of the rate in the minors, so it's a toss if they are better off in the majors or with 3 CPs in the minors. I often promote OS21 guys in a CP crunch.
There is, of course, the injury risk and the fact that a player with a late birthday converts better in the minors.
