Black Ink

November 11, 2015 at 06:59AM View BBCode

I really wish a feature could be added that would show a player's stats in bold ink when that player leads his LEAGUE in a category. Right now, a player has to lead the majors in order to have his stat shown in bold. I just had a player lead the NL in HR's, with 42, 9 more than his closest rival, but on his card, he gets black ink for RBI's and AVG, but no one can tell that he actually won the Triple Crown in the NL because another player in the AL hit 43 homers.

I had the same idea and thought I'd posted it to Idea Scale but checked and it's not. Would get my vote.

(Yeah, yeah, I know Idea Scale seems dead, but I have it on good authority it's just sleeping heavily.)

It's a reasonable enough idea. And sometimes the balance in the leagues can really skew some stats.

But in MLB these days you have 15 teams in a league, so it's more in line with reality to be the best among 16 than among 8.

the notes. if you care that it won the triple crown or whatever in the division or league, whatever you want to call it (as red all but points out, eight teams is hardly a league), put it in the notes.

(also, in the league leaders anyone who is curious about the leaders in the national or american "league" can easily choose that and see that if that is what they want to see.)

((what would really be kind of fun, you know, would be to do some cross pollinating between leagues, and have the winner of the world series in a league challenge the winner of the world series in another league to seven game series. this sounds fun, but its impractical.))

what would be more fun, would be for two leagues, whose schedules run close together, to become affiliated. this would be more fun that 24 team leagues, because the drafts are rather cumbersome in those leagues, the rating of them for the winning team to get all the way to 24 is particularly tedious.

but imagine two 16 team leagues, playing with similar rules (they would not have to be identical rules, not really), playing identical games per day (you could simply pause on of the leagues in the os and get the two leagues running on precisely the same schedule).

they would run just as leagues of this type do now, with respect to having their own draft pools and drafts, the whole thing. the only difference would be, after they each had their playoffs, there would be one more playoff series between the winners from each league. an added layer of fun would be to insert a little code to allow these two leagues to trade with each other, players only, no draft picks, for simplicity. along with code like that would be code so folks in each league could see all the players, and they could acess game logs from the player cards to get the kind of information they might seek going into the off season and the poetential "world championship" matchup). folks in these two leagues could pay something extra to accomodate this stuff.

this is kind of a far fetched idea, sure. but the whole thing is pretty stale at this point, with bots taking over all over the place. leagues should be consolidated, without the folks in them having to ask. two leagues that have eight owners each should be combines, three leagues with 8, 4 and 4, whatever combination that adds up to 16, all these leagues should be cleaned up and consolidated until we get to the real core of folks that are actually going to play the thing going forward, and then that core could decide what is possible at this 16 team format to kind of improve it and make it more fun. at the very least, we need to make the merging process easier so leagues can more efficiently combine on their own now.

something like i describe above might be appealing or not. something needs to happen though.

(not that i think anything will really).

What tm4559 said (about the Public Notes).

At the end of each SimSeason, when I have time (which is to say not as often as I'd like), I open six "League Leader" tabs.
1. All Time League
2. Single Season League
3. Current Year League
4. Current Year American/National (whichever one my team is in)
5. Team Single Season
6. Team All Time

I then check for my codebits and note anything significant accomplished in the Public Notes. It may one day make the difference between getting in the league's HOF or not.

As to the other idea, it seems like it would be easy enough to set up a "Nettles-Brown Playoff League" and then copy over the rosters for the two World Series teams and play the seven games. Give each team a one day rest to study each other and set their preferences.

Sounds like fun and would be a new wrinkle without *that much* extra coding, I would think. But I'm a writer, not a coder, so I can't say for sure.
