Draft day tips

For you 12 lucky coaches that will make the playoffs this season you have more to worry about right now than draft day so stop reading.
I'm waiting...
Lol ok for the rest of you guys like me who missed the playoffs or just need some helpful tips on drafting let's get started on this. First off let me just say this is how I view the draft and draft from my perspective so it might be a bit beyond your liking or not what you agree with so please share if there's any of my tips or strategies you don't really agree with.
Ok first off I have some past strategies I used to draft they were very effective and won me two simbowls in three years in zeta(yeah I know that league doesn't count as a real league buts it's very good for testing.) one strategy you want to use if you are a team that has talent but lacking of a legitimate QB is to just draft any QB as long as he has B+ throw power and accuracy and here's why, because of a suggestion I made in zeta players are younger in the draft now and based on the development of qbs that I've seen not only in that league but the FhFl the MAFL edfl etc.(I have a lot of free time) qbs usually develop very well sure it might take them a couple years but they will still end up to be at least at a solid Athrow accuracy and power most likely A accuracy it all depends on that potiental speaking of that...
Strategy 2- always take potiental into account when drafting and here's why, unless you have a player with low potiental that already has good ratings with attributes or a QB that's at B+ or A- throw power and accuracy will not develop quickly and will screw you over in the long run. Players with lower potiental don't get as many IC's on a week to week basis and that will in the long run make the player only turn out to be average at best and average players aren't usually starters on championship caliber teams unless there is a weakness at that spot or the average player plays on special teams. But at the same time you can have that rare occasion(espcially on the offensive line) that a high potiental player doesn't develop as well either but I'll get into development in a second right now it's potiental. Anyways high and medium potiental players can usually become starters or decent back ups because of faster growth to reach that potiental level.
Ok now for developing- based on the game guide and from what I've seen plus had on my team, players with higher attitude get more ICs which in turn means they will develop into a better player faster which is why attitude is top three in attributes to look for in a player the other two in the top three are execution and agression but more on that in a sec. When it comes to development a lot of factors come into it and you can never say that "this guy" will develop faster than "that guy" because coaches train players in their way and not everyone's way is the same but attitude and potiental will give you a better chance of getting a player who will become a total beast I meant look at Jason watts.
Ok when to comes to the three main attributes that I feel is most important in drafting a player there is a complication with attitude because when juniors declare in the draft you can't see there dang attitude rating or potiental so before I talk about the big three attributes les talk about the drafting of juniors. Juniors because of the age changes usually come into the league at age 21! So if you are planning on drafting a junior you could still look at aggression and execution which is still key in getting a good player but not the only thing to look at. With juniors it's better to draft one if his position attributes are up to par because if you get a mediocre junior it's like a lottery and you run the risk of getting a low potiental low attitude bust but if you gets a guy with high potiental or high attitude or both then give yourself a pat on the back.
Ok let's get to the big three attributes that are key with drafting. Attitude Aggression and Execution.
With attitude you have to make sure you don't ignore this attribute cause as I stated earlier the higher the attitude the faster the kid will grow and if you get a low attitude player with high aggression then just look forward to little growth and lots of penalties. Anyways a player with high attitude will be a great leader for your team will grow quicker and if they have high stamina combined with the high attitude will not only stay in games longer but will always start preseason and regular season games at or around 95% energy which will really benefit you especially late in games. Medium attitude players aren't as good of leaders and won't be on the field as long but they will still grow at a reasonable rate and will make your pick worth while.
Aggresion- oh boy where do I start, this is probably the best and most important rating for ANY player you want to draft and here's why, aggressive players are always more willing to leave it all one the field so they make plays and/or make an impact but they will screw you over especially if they have a bad attitude because they will commit a lot of penalties and cost you some wins. Having an aggressive player is very beneficial but if there are other players on your board that have less agression but similar skill set then take that guy and leave the high aggression guy alone unless you are into getting more penalties.
Execution- this is a rating that while most guys say isn't important I feel is probably the second most important behind aggression and the reason why is because execution is very important for all players. Not only will a high execution player be prone to less penalties if he's aggressive but they also get bonuses that allow them to play beyond there abilities for a short period of time. If you're down in the fourth quarter and you have a A+ throw power and throw accuracy QB with B execution chances are 50/50 when it comes to him being able to execute a comeback drive while a solid A throw power and throw accuracy QB with A execution will give you more of a 75/25 shot of making that key drive to win the game not saying that execution alone will help players be as great as they are but it's very beneficial to take a high execution player at any position when drafting.
Ok now it's time for me to discuss overall ratings. Now for all players in a draft they get rated based on how good they are at key attributes for there position. But afe is a lovely troll and sometimes places high rates players that lack at certain key attributes whether it be that center with horrible strength or that high carry high speed RB with no agility to save his life. The point is DONT USE JUST THE OVERALL RATING TO JUDGE HOW GOOD A PLAYER WILL BE. You will dead faster Than a fish out of water if you do this because almost every player always lacks at something vital for there position.
One thing about drafting punters kickers or return men in the first round- only do it if you already have a good core of players and you just need to fill that hole otherwise DONT DO IT. It's not worth it especially if you could fix your team in other areas but after round one and round two(give or take) it's probably good for you to start placing those special teamers on your radar.
Advice on if you have a pick high in a round- if you have a high pick my advice would be to either get the best player that would fit a need or just take the best guy available cause let's face it if you have a high pick but you draft a player that you could get in the high second round then not only will you have potienally missed out on a better player but you will have to make sure that this guy will be able to develop and play to the level of guys that are at his position(BUT if you draft a lower rated QB in the high part of the round then that method isn't as bad I mean look at Eric Elric)
Advice on if you have a low pick in a round- if you have a low pick in a round then either look for a player that could potienally drop into your hands or look at the players rated lower and see if they have key attributes that would be worth getting them at that spot I mean if you have a high pick chances are you're a championship calibre team and taking flyers that could improve your chances is a plus.
Two more things to look at with a player that is in the draft, combine results and the improvement page in the player card section. Now these two things are more important when scouting juniors than seniors but it can help when scouting seniors as well. But when you're scouting a junior the combine results can help know how much stamina a player has with the 100 yard dash. I feel like it can tell you more but I will have to look into that later. The improvement page under the player card can tell you how much a player has grown in there abilities from when they started college to when they ended and it can really help especially when drafting juniors cause it will not only give an idea of how much potiental the kid has but it will give a general idea of the attitude ratings based on how much that player grew.
Well I hope these tips helped I know there are more and probably better ones but this is just my philosophy and I felt like sharing to help out those who need a little guidance in drafting in sim dynasty premium football. Well that's all for now ill be doing my predictions tomorrow and setting up my draft board for this up coming draft so but for those playoff teams that decided to read all of this good luck in that chase for a ring and congrats to all the guys for competing for another season in this great league :) .

Being that i love the draft and feel its one of the most important aspects of the sim, Ill add my 2 cents. Like Stu said, these are my feelings and will be different from how some of you feel. Whatever way works for you is the most important thing.
Stu threw out some good stuff above but i use his big 3, attitude/aggression/execution for tie breakers. Nothing trumps skill in my opinion.
Each position has a skill set i look for. I draft those players regardless of overall grade and even position. I play players to the position i feel their skill set best fits. If thats a LB at SS then i play him at SS.
I also like to use 1st round picks on high impact players. Such as QB, RB, WR, DE, CB. Someone that can make an impact and change games. You can find suitable OL in pretty much any of the first 3 to 4 rounds. Same with LB's. OL i pretty much want highest strength possible with red letter pass coverage and B and up run blocking. A very good owner that just left the league got me hooked on the OL strategy. Seemed to work well for him and its done alright for me as well.
Im not going to go into what i look for at each position but if a new owner or any owner would like that, please u2u me and ill type it up.
I think the biggest thing with the draft is evaluating what skills work best for each position and draft guys according. Example, if you are dropping into zone coverage a lot you want LB's with pass cover skills. Run cover skills don't really matter. If you are playing man and blitzing, you want LB's that can stuff the run and get to the QB. Strength and agility.
Just a few thoughts. You need to find that strategy that works best for your team and game plans.
Good luck in the draft!

I guess I will throw my two cents in as well, although I am no where near the veteran that Joey and Stu are, I have managed to earn myself a couple rings in as many months and I learned a lot from Joey and Geo just to name a couple.
I post the rankings for offense/defense pass/run not to call out the worst teams in certain areas, but that is how I evaluate my team. Right now, my run defense is top notch, and in a league dominated by the run, I feel that is extremely important to having a chance to go the distance in the postseason, however, my pass defense leaves a lot to be desired (as well as my QB pressure which is another category that I look at). Personally I build a defense to stop the run, in just about every league that I play in and allow the secondary to play man to man. This only works when you have the secondary to manage it, in other words super stud CB FS and SS. My target for this draft consequently would be secondary players that are better than the ones that I have to improve upon the weak spot of my defense.
On the flip side, my run game on offense leaves so much to be desired. I don't think that it is for lack of talent in the backfield, but probably my inexperience at running good ground play calling and a higher than average pass game. Still, the chance to improve the running game is always a plus so RB will be on my radar this year as well.
The two most important areas for every chance, and my personal belief as the only postitions to nearly always take the best available unless they are already packed with superstuds, are the lines. A great offensive line will allow an average QB and backfield to play above average ball, and a super stud dline will put pressure on a QB even if they aren't blitzing. I don't know how many games i have seen my QB take pressure nearly every down and my opponent only blitzes 4-5 times during the game. Any chance at improving those two lines should be jumped on without hesitation or looking back.
Again, we all have different philosophies and that is one of the things that makes this game so much fun, is learning new tactics and adjusting tactics to beat those players that are so tough to beat.
My two cents, hopefully all the input from everyone helps broaden thought processes and can bring about a new era of champions =)

All great advice.
You can also look at a players improvements in college to see how they will improve in the league. If they improve great in college it will continue, if they didn't improve much they won't improve in the pro's. In the JTFL I signed a QB that improved well in college, but didn't improve his B+ power during college. He continued to improve well in the pros but his power was still not improving. Sometimes a player can improve well but just can't get any faster or more agile or throw harder so look how they improve at their skill set not just overall. If you want a corner to be faster and in college his speed didn't improve it won't in the pro's either.
Potential also effects how soon they will start to decline and how fast they will decline when older.
Grosvenor was a beast, A+ in every WR skill set but D+ potential so he started to drop off at a younger age and dropped off very fast.
When I draft I look at skill set, then improvements.

I seem to find many new aspects to the game and have had the privelage of testing in the beta test site as well as draft experimenting.
All points above are very well researched and well explained.
I've had the wake up call at different times where Attitude killed a great player by forcing me to condition him 1/4+ of the season and then some meaning he lost out essential IC's on drills like increasing a safeties pursuit at a key age and or not being able to add weight training for a lineman's strength regiment. Potential from my experience seems to do more damage in quick declines than improvements. But this said quick declines = lost improvent at an earlier time thinking about it.
There is some random chance however how a guy will improve just like in real life you have to take risks and the rewards can be very good if you key in on risk with paying attention to the key position attributes.
But to develop take your lumps for a season or 2 if you see a player developing. the reward will come for many a seasons there after. GULp --- I took it bad this season and probably next with dodged tackles like never ever before to develop 3 players. Will it work ???? Call me after next year. lol......
Joey is correct draft according to play strategy.
And finally my 2 pennies worth ----- Don't ever allow any position on your team to age together at the same time = disaster (lol my sfaeties)etc...etc........ keep all positions strong as best you can. not doing so will haave you scrambling to set up who will play what.
Attributes for position more than overall ----- As low exe seems to diminish players overall score.
Also what I like to do for the 4th round and later ---- look at the players rated 150 to 300 + and you are guaranteed to find at least 10 - 20 players who if used properly a given IC's will be very very good starters.
here are some examples to support this
Success --- http://football.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=3370136&displaytab=imps
Huge failure --- http://football.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=3094888&displaytab=imps
Has me scratching my head sort of but seems that the c- vs A+ make a difference. POT
Then the advantage of grabbing 20 yr old at draft time
http://football.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=3404605&displaytab=imps
All improvements at 21...
Then on to NE --- age 20 n at draft ----
http://football.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=3404650&displaytab=imps
Moral of this edit Try to get em young if you can.....
