Pittsburgh manager Danny McGraw described Fred Lobert as being in "total command all the way.'' If not Lobert was very close. He allowed no runs over the 8.1 innings he worked. New York had only four hits and two walks. Lobert struck six.
He did not allow more than one hit in any inning until the ninth when Rafael Saltzgaver and Danny Detherage got to him for two singles promptly McGraw to bring in his closer John Froelich to put an end to it.
Lobert is now 7-2 on the season.
Pittsburgh scored their first run in the bottom of the first inning off starter and losing pitcher Lou Ralston (4-3). After two were out John Crowson walked. Scott Lapan's single got him around to third. Hubb Battle bounced one up the middle for a single to drive him in.
In the third the same group of the batting order again gave Ralston a problem. This time Walt Underwood singled with one out. Crowson dropped a single into center field with Underwood on the move making it to third base. Lapan's fly ball cashed him in for a 2-0 lead.
All that Lopert really needed.
But to make sure they added two more on in the eighth off Charlie Perryman. Crowson beat out a bunt single. Lapan singled to center. Pinch hitter Tom Koegel walked one out later. and with two outs pinch hitter Hilario Garcia drove in both runners with a single upping the advantage to 4-0.
Second place St Louis got spanked 15-4 by San Francisco and dropped four behind the streaking Pirates who won for the six straight game.
Right hander Bill Rienecker (3-1 4.44) is scheduled to pitch against right hander Dixie Boyer (2-3 5.440 in the second game of the series.
