Catcher Conversion
June 19, 2015 at 04:34PM View BBCode
I'm rebuilding my team and things are going alright. This is my first attempt at really doing a full overhaul of a team so I'm sure things won't go as smoothly as I'd hope but as of now I've got some really good prospects and should have another good positional player coming up in the next draft.
However, I'm really having a hard time getting a catcher. I know they're rare in the draft but is it common for someone to convert a young player into a catcher? I tried briefly last season but they did not gain any % at the position so I gave up trying.
Also, by choosing to convert a players position does that waste improvement chances for their other skills or is this separate?

I don't know about common but its hard to convert a player to catcher, you should probably expect 1-2 conversions in the minors every season so you have to keep him down for 5 years and not convert any other players the entire time. Then he's still only about 50% when he comes up and it will take several more seasons to get him to 100%.
It doesn't take away from other minor league chances, but he will lose chances for being "out of position" for a couple of years in the majors.

i've never been able to do it, but i know it can be done semi-reliably, i've only tried a few times. the hard part is that the conversion percentage is heavily influenced by Range, and the guys you want to move to Catcher are Arm-heavy. you might be better off building everywhere else and then seeking a trade for a vet backstop when you're ready to contend.

Yeah I was thinking a trade might just be the best choice so not to take away from overall ability.
Cheers guys.

Positional training in the minors is separate from "skills training" however you only get one chance per team/per game so you are best advised to limit it to one, or at most two players.
Training a player to be a catcher in the minors will take 4-6 years, and then they will likely only be 50-65% which means it will take another 175-250 starts in the majors to completely convert.
If you have an OS18 player who you plan on leaving in the minors for 5+ seasons give it a shot, [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=5350410&statsorimps=stats]Wooderson[/url] for example took 6 years in the minors to reach 60% while [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=9309179&statsorimps=stats]Rush[/url] also took 6 years but made it to 80% before coming up . As mentioned above higher range helps with conversions but if you have a high range/high arm teenager I'd be more inclined to make him a SS.

It's difficult, but not impossible. You need a player who is young (OS18 or OS19), has a good arm (very important for a catcher) but also a decent range. Ideal is something like C range and B/B+ arm.
Convert him to 1B first, then to C. If you're lucky you can get 3-4 improves per season once you've converted him to 1B.
[url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=11414858&statsorimps=imps]Here[/url] is an example where I succeeded. [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?statsorimps=imps&id=11501063]This guy[/url] is well underway.
But if the range is too low, or the player is too old, or if you simply have bad lucl, the conversion will fail. I tried to convert [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?statsorimps=imps&id=11510918]this guy[/url] but he didn't convert well and I've got a better prospect anyway. I also gave up on [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=11377749&statsorimps=imps]that one[/url] - started too late, and once he was OS23 (and I had to call him up because this is a CP league) he had only a 30% skill at catcher and converted only 2 of the last 252 chances. He probably would have made it had I started at OS18.
Seems to me as if the conversion rate drops significantly around OS23. But I've got not a lot of experience with that, if a guy is still in the minors at OS24 he's a backup caliber player anyway, and it's usually not worth the trouble to convert such a guy. After all, you can't do any position changes in the minors for about 5 years.
Regards, F.

[url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=9309179&statsorimps=stats]Rush[/url] was in the minors at OS24 and most of OS25, so I guess you have a higher standard for backup players than most :).

This was my only time doing it:
http://simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=11266234&statsorimps=imps
He was at 65% after 5 seasons in the minors and took about 1 and a third seasons in the majors to get to 100%

I seem to always have a minor leager traing to become a catcher. If I draft them at OS 18, and their arm will likely make A+, and I don't have good future in catching (which is pretty much always) I train that guy as a catcher, even if think he'll be a backup at best.
Usually by the time they are OS 23 they have made it to 50%,

I don't believe there is any reason to train to 1B first and Fruno's posts seem to indicate that, and we have no reason to believe that training at 1B helps. It is considered a hard position change either way. I would put the idea in the category of a myth and your just wasting time needed to get to C.
I believe I have done 4 successful conversions to C, and gave up a few times. I can only find 2 right now. I'll see if I can find the others, but there is no way I can do a search for them so I have to use my brain which can be problematic.
Davis http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=10448358&statsorimps=imps made 95% by the end of OS22. His range couldn't have been higher than C+ at that time.
Nash http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=10643624&statsorimps=imps was 70% when he was brought up after OS22, but he wasn't trained at C at 18yo, only starting when he was 19.

I have found converting from CF to be the best.
