Opening Day

Today is July 4, 1950. What's so special? Everything. Today is the best day of the year, opening day of the baseball season. The grass is fresh and green, peanuts are roasting, everything is perfect. Today we kicked off the beginning of the Fred Mitchell League. In honor of this great day, the best pitchers in the league took the mound to win it for their team.
Boston, 4, Texas, 1
Texas ace Jackson Pace did not have his best stuff. This was evident when the first batter against him, Reggie Richard, hit a HR out of the MASSIVE, the biggest park in the league, Tropic Field. Pace did not rebound and he scattered 3 more runs over the next 5 innings. The offense was not enough to make up for Pace's struggles, only scoring 1 run on 6 hits. For Boston, starter John Hayes pitched an excellent game, 7 innings pitched, 1 run, 5 hits, and 9 Ks. Not only that, but their offense was good. Jim Alexander went 4-4 with an RBI, and Ron Ditmar went 3-4. Texas will look for a better outing from Pace next time.
Tampa Bay, 8, Seattle, 0.
Ernie Burich was pitching a fantastic game until the 7th, when he did not even get an out before he was pulled after giving up 7 runs. 6 walks in the inning hurt Seattle a tremendous amount, and Tampa hit 4 singles to boot. Seattle could not make up for this as their offense struggled, collecting only 5 hits, and striking out 13 times, as Nick Clausen simply threw his pitches right past their bats. Almost every batter in the Tampa lineup got an RBI, and Nick Clausen showed his bat as well, going 2-4 with an RBI.
New York, 3, Baltimore, 0
Another shutout in the league. Ty Duryea pitched a great game, 7 innigns, no runs, 4 hits and 4 walks. Closer Alex Schoonmaker nabbed the save, as Baltimore was powerless, getting 4 hits total. The New York offense wasn't great either, getting only 4 hits as well, but they made the most of those hits, as they hit 2 HRs, one by Ray Jacome, one by Darrell Carreon to back up their pitching.
Kansas City, 5, Minnesota, 4
This was a close one, as the lead was passed back and forth, but eventually Kansas City took it with 3 in the 7th, the big blow a 2 run HR by Jerry Cook. Johnny McNeely had 2 doubles, Tom Hernandez and Pryor Coble got 2 hits as well, and that was all Kansas needed. Despite John Rullo and Bud Menze's efforts, it wasn't enough to win the game. Kansas reliever Wally Woodburn got his 1st save of the year.
First update for you guys, I will see ya with the next article.
