Draft population

Hi,
I use a rating system where I assign a value to a player depending on his projected skill at OS30 - a player of 80 or better has a first round grade, a player at 75-80 a second round grade and so on.
Now, I have teams where there seem to be consistently deep drafts with a lot of players with first round grades (like the Cy Young league, http://simdynasty.com/leaguerules.jsp?leagueid=4320), and other teams with consistently weak drafts where there are hardly any player with first round grades (like the Dave Winfield league, url=http://simdynasty.com/leaguerules.jsp?leagueid=1120]http://simdynasty.com/leaguerules.jsp?leagueid=1120).
If I see it in 2-3 drafts I attribute it to chance. But this is going on for something like 10 seasons, so I would guess there has to be a configuration affecting it? Or has it got something to do with the variable development settings? VarDev leagues seem to have weaker drafts, IMO.
Regards, F.

The Cy Young league is a 24 team league, correct? That league will have a deeper draft more often than a 16 team league, because the draft pool is larger.

Correct, but I noticed that in other leagues too. In the Cy young we had a number of good pitchers almost in every year, while it was very hard in the Jackie Robinson and Ivan Rodriguez to find a good pitchers. I should know, I had high picks ;-)

That's why pitching prices can be high. I've had more than a few rebuilds where I was picking in the top 5 and couldn't get a decent pitcher for the first handful of seasons. Then you pick 10th and there are a half dozen top notch pitching prospects.

Sure, I used it to get quite a lot of top pitching prospects, more than I need in fact - I'll soon be looking at a rotation of 5 "A" pitchers if I'm lucky, with additional prospects as trade bait. Can't have enough of those :-)

Willy D, don't get pissed at me, but I thought I had read that the qualtity of the Cuban and Japanese vet draftees depended on the quality of minor league systems in the league. Wouldn't this apply to other prospects?
What I mean is that if a league was better at developing prospects than other leagues, then the draft population would be better.
I have to go look up where I got that from but I'm sure that you read it from a post by admin.

thats not true, there are always the same number of imports. 4 in a 16-team league (3 Japanese, 1 Cuban). Dunno about a 24, but I assume there are 6. their skill level is influenced by the talent in the league, but that doesn't go for the domestic players.

My bad. I got auto corrected and will edit my post. I meant quality.
And thanks for the confirmation on draft population, Paul.

I'll confirm what Paul said. The regular draftees' skill level is totally random and doesn't get better as the league skill level goes up.
Think about it Ezra. If they did, the draft would eventually get so talented, that the game wouldn't be fun any more. Playoff teams would be picking up blue chip talent with their picks every season, and 3rd and 4th rounders would be solid picks too. Hell, eventually you could have hordes of A rated players, and a bunch of A+ guys too. It would be worse than edit leagues!
