Does V decline more quickly than C?

September 13, 2014 at 03:07AM View BBCode

I've never seen this discussed before, but someone mentioned on our league board today that V declines more quickly than C.

I looked at players I've had and all but one had declined more in V than in C.

Then I looked at the league all time list (RSL) and found two things. One I didn't expect at all, pitchers from the early years don't show any declines! In the early days of the game did players not decline? Or do the cards just not show it?

But otherwise every pitcher in the top 20 declined more in V than they did in C.

It makes sense to me that the game could be design that way because it is probably true in real life (with a few rare exceptions).

Any thoughts or knowledge on this?

And if it were true what does that mean? Wouldn't it mean that in general a A+/A pitcher might age better than an A/A+ pitcher?

I have found, in my more or less limited experience, that yes - Control declines more slowly than Velocity, and the Contact attribute declines more slowly than Power. The players that fit those profiles make *excellent* cheap trade targets at ages 34-35 and will still perform quite nicely for another season (sometimes two).

Yes, it does. Sometimes much more quickly. On average, velocity probably declines at 3:1 rate compared to control.

Yes. And it's another reason why control is better velocity. While in decline, the control guy that started at similar quality will maintain quality for more seasons, and can be traded for more value during that time.
