Philly - Pitt series

Though there was nothing more then pride being played for, my series with Pitt that just finished was an 'edge of your seat' one!
In game 1, Philly takes a 10-4 lead into bottom of the 6th only to allow Pitt to close the gap. Going into the bottom of the 9th we, Philly, led 11-7, but Pitt rallies for 3 runs with one out to close to 11-10 with a guy on 1st. Next batter grouds into FC, leaving runner on 1st. Runner, Delgodo, steals 2nd, then moves to 3rd on throwing error during steal attempt. Then a long fly ball to the warning track stays in play and in nabbed for final out. Philly wins 11-10
In game 2, Pitt takes a 2-0 lead into the 7th oly to have the pesky Slayers tie it up on 3 singles and a walk. Score remains tied until the 9th. Philly gets a single and advances to 2nd on a bunt, but strands the runner. Then Pitt's Chuck Jones, first batter-up, PH for Pitt's starting pitcher, smaxks a walk-off HR to win 3-2.
In game 3 Ron Pozo shows why Philly paid what they did buy holding Pitt to 4 hits and 2 walks going the distance. Pitt's starter Halicki wasn't much worse, giving up only 7 hits and 2 walks, allowing only a solo-shot to Leech in the 3rd and Philly wins 1-0

Pozo is going to be one of the best pitchers in the league, no doubt about it....

the odd thing about Pozo is though I am sure nobody will agree with me, I don't regret that trade at all, I have gotten a lot of value out of it. Given that the Wind lost 100 this year its these pitching trades, all made in my first ever SD season, that haunt me
1. Matt Bowen to Brooklyn. What the heck what was I thinking, I wish there was a do-over button, I guess there may be some small hope for Sparma left.
2. Frank Mattis straight up to Baltimore for Fritz Covington. Covington should have been a near all-star, he is the poster boy for blatant ABE abuse but the reality is Mattis is the ace of a team on its way to a second playoff appearance and Covington is now on his fourth team.
3. Ray Locke to Pittsburgh for Andy Black - in the '50 season I was all excited about fielding a small ball team and thought it could be competitive and also thought any guy with control of B would be good and I had a bunch (and they did pretty decently in '50) so I treated Locke as excess , alas not so true on either case so now I have a utility infielder and Pitt has a pitcher who will shine in the coming years.
Does it say anything that those were the ONLY trades I made with Pitt and Brooklyn? I guess I set a standard there
I think I FINALLY truly know what I am doing, but I am pessimistic given the wreckage I inflicted upon myself by the Mitchel trade (traded first round picks in '52 and '53 for one player-say ow repeatedly) and the lack of quality in the drafts whether I can rehab the Wind- but what the heck, someone has to lose in this League, so think of me as an ego saver for the rest of you. ;)

Well, not to split hairs but you have made more than one trade with me...early in 1950 I traded you Harry Roxburgh and you traded me Chuck Wagon.
I wouldnt discount Sparma either for the future....too bad you only got him 70 innings this year...he could easily be B+ control in a couple of years with full playing time.

I had Sparma in the minors with 5 Cps and he was getting NADA in the first part of the season (seriously he had THREE!!!!! upgrades total) so I gave up and let him get toasted in the majors in the second part of the season, yet another reason I am crabby with ABE.

Yeah...my young pitcher in the minors really has been getting skunked too....but I think the key to "beating" ABE is to ride everything out...this game is just a bunch of 1s and 0s after all.

I've found riding out certain players can pay off (a little late for my bats to come alive this season, but they did well over all). Pitching is the weakness on my team and I don't see a lot in the upcoming draft to get overly excited about.
I might dangle a couple of my veterans at the beginning of next season to see what I can get as far as some decent young pitching prospects and hope my bats stay hot enough to keep the team afloat until the pitching comes around.

the problem with that approach is that few teams are willing to trade the increasingly few good pitching prospects and marginal relievers went for second rounders in '51 so imagine what the price is on guys who can actually get someone out right now. I have failed miserably in picking up decent pitchers and believe me I tried.
