Defenses are regularly lining up in Nickel vs. The Pro Set and I formation, especially on first down. I noticed it in my games and then went and looked at some others and it is happening at a very high rate. Its a huge disadvantage to the defense and the same type of problem we fixed when we used to have defenses playing in 4-3 vs. Shotgun. Obviously itīs a little different in that you can still throw for Pro Set and I, but take a look at average yards per carry. 15 teams are rushing for more than 4.5 or more yards per and 7 are rushing for more than 5.0 per carry. That's crazy high.May 09, 2014 at 08:19PM View BBCode
Do you have a lot of zone in your 1st down package? I know a deep zone call is always out of the nickel and shallow zone is sometimes nickel and sometimes 4-3.May 09, 2014 at 08:26PM View BBCode
rich is probably right though, in that most times people are going to want the 4-3 (or 3-4) against a 2WR set, even if they are playing zone.May 09, 2014 at 10:11PM View BBCode
I have an idea for this... I am thinking of splitting defense into two completely different strategy sets... one for strategy and one for formation, and adding formation (based on the offense's formation) to the defense's Advanced strategies. This will make the 3-4 much more useful when I add it.May 10, 2014 at 05:45PM View BBCode
I think that makes a lot of sense. The formation matchup is where it all starts. I found a way the last couple games to stay out of Nickel on 1st down vs I and Pro Set, but it was against running teams so you dont have to be so worried about them going over the top like you do with a passing team.May 11, 2014 at 03:09AM View BBCode
I would definitely want to decide what defensive formation I'm in based on the down and distance situation. I wouldn't want the defense to simply match the formation, nickle to shotgun, base defense against pro set or I. I'm going to want to be in nickle in 2nd or 3rd and long regardless of what the formation the offense is in. And at the end of the game if I'm protecting a lead I would like to be able to determine when my defense is in the nickle based on down and distance and position on the field.May 11, 2014 at 09:48PM View BBCode
Like everyone else, I think this is a great directions. I can't help but wonder if there is a plan (or desire) to split D-Front and Secondary duties. For example, D-line 3-4 middle run stop with Secondary Double Flanker; or 4-3 Sam/Will with Secondary Prevent. More complexity, but more control (and more headaches for Chris)Pages: 1
